Primary Gastric Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma: A Potent Mimicker of Neuroendocrine Carcinoma.

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is a malignant tumor with skeletal muscle differentiation that usually occurs in soft tissues of the extremities or trunk. To date, only a few cases of primary gastric ARMS have been reported. Herein, we describe a case of ARMS in a man in his 80s and present a literature review.

Prospective therapeutic studies of disseminated extranodal large B-cell lymphoma including intravascular large B-cell lymphoma.

This study aimed to establish a standard treatment for disseminated extranodal large B-cell lymphoma, including intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (DEN-LBCL/IVL), and to validate the clinical diagnostic criteria we proposed. Between 2006 and 2016, 22 patients were enrolled in a clinical trial conducted by the Hokuriku Hematology Oncology Study Group. The first cycle of chemotherapy consisted of dose-reduced cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP) with delayed administration of rituximab.

Pilot use of a mycolactone-specific lateral flow assay for Buruli ulcer: A case report from Japan.

Buruli ulcer, caused by , is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) characterized by necrosis of the cutaneous tissue, predominantly affecting the limbs. The pathogenesis of this disease is mainly attributed to mycolactone, a lipid toxin produced by . Here, we report the case of a 7-year-old Japanese girl who presented with worsening ulceration on her left forearm, extending to the elbow, following antimicrobial treatment.

Conjoined lumbosacral nerve root: a case report.

Background: In patients with conjoined nerve roots, hemilaminectomy with sufficient exposure of the intervertebral foramen or lateral recess is required to prevent destabilization and ensure correct mobility of the lumbosacral spine. To the best of our knowledge, no case reports have detailed the long-term course of conjoined nerve roots after surgery.

Case Presentation: We report the case of a 51-year-old Japanese man with a conjoined nerve root.

Factors Associated with Intradiscal Vacuum Phenomenon after Traumatic Thoracolumbar Fracture.

 Posttraumatic kyphosis of the thoracolumbar spine is a possible cause of deterioration of activities of daily living. Thus, postoperative kyphosis is an important issue in treating traumatic thoracolumbar fractures. The intradiscal vacuum phenomenon (IVP) after a traumatic thoracolumbar fracture is considered an important predictor of severe kyphosis after implant removal.

A case of temporary occlusion of donor artery after secondary generalized seizure in a patient with superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery bypass.

Background: To prevent stroke recurrence, a superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass for atherosclerotic cerebrovascular occlusive disease is performed. Post stroke epilepsy is known as serious sequelae of stroke. Herein, we present a case of a 60-year-old man who underwent STA-MCA bypass for the prevention of stroke recurrence; however, the donor artery was deemed to be temporally occluded secondary to generalized seizure.

Walk-In Hospital Admission of Patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Clinical Presentation and Outcome.

Objective: Neurosurgeons occasionally encounter cases of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in admitted walk-in patients, termed "walk-in SAH." However, their clinical characteristics have not been fully understood. We thus, aimed to investigate several characteristics of patients with walk-in SAH and compare them with those of patients with good grade SAH who arrived at the hospital by ambulance.

Anti-glomerular Basement Membrane Disease After Diagnosis of Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy: A Case Report.

Anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease has one of the worst prognoses of nephritis and is rarely associated with other forms of glomerulonephritis. In this report, we present the case of a 76-year-old man who developed anti-GBM disease four months after being diagnosed with IgA nephropathy (IgAN). To our knowledge, although there have been several reports of IgAN combined with anti-GBM disease, there have been no cases in which we were able to confirm that the anti-GBM antibody titer changed from negative to positive over the disease course.

Decompression for lumbar spinal stenosis at the intrathecal catheter insertion site during intrathecal baclofen therapy: a case report.

Background: Intrathecal baclofen therapy can substantially improve symptoms in most patients with severe spasticity due to traumatic spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral paresis. To the best of our knowledge, decompression surgeries at the intrathecal catheter insertion site in patients with a preexisting intrathecal pump for drug delivery have not been reported.

Case Presentation: We report the case of a 61-year-old Japanese man with lumbar spinal stenosis who underwent intrathecal baclofen therapy.

Prognostic impact of clinical outcome after endoscopic gastroduodenal stent placement for malignant gastric outlet obstruction: a multicenter retrospective cohort study using a time-dependent analysis.

Background: Endoscopic gastroduodenal stent (GDS) placement is widely used as a safe and effective method to rapidly improve gastrointestinal symptoms of malignant gastric outlet obstruction (MGOO). While previous studies reported the utility of chemotherapy after GDS placement for prognosis improvement, they did not fully address the issue of immortal time bias.

Objectives: To examine the association between prognosis and clinical course following endoscopic GDS placement, using a time-dependent analysis.

Real-world effect of bevacizumab and eribulin on metastatic breast cancer using a propensity score matching analysis.

Bevacizumab and eribulin are novel agents for the treatment of HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC); however, the choice between bevacizumab and eribulin for MBC can be difficult. The present study aimed to compare two treatment strategies, eribulin followed by bevacizumab and paclitaxel (BEV + PTX) versus BEV + PTX followed by eribulin, to determine whether the order of administration affects the outcome of MBC in the real world. A total of 180 patients who started BEV + PTX and eribulin treatment for HER2-negative MBC from August 2011 to June 2018 were selected.

A case of inflammatory mass resulting from calcium crystal deposition disease around the thoracic spine.

Calcium crystal deposition diseases are transient benign diseases that can cause intense pain. They can sometimes cause masses and soft tissue edema around the calcification, which should be differentiated from tumors and abscesses. We report a case of calcium crystal deposition disease with an enhanced mass on the ventral side of the vertebral bodies resembling tumors and abscesses.

Differences in clinical characteristics of cervical spine injuries in older adults by external causes: a multicenter study of 1512 cases.

Although traumatic cervical spine injuries in older adults are commonly caused by minor traumas, such as ground-level falls, their prognosis is often unfavorable. Studies examining the clinical characteristics of cervical spine injuries in older adults according to the external cause of injury are lacking. This study included 1512 patients of ≥ 65 years of age with traumatic cervical spine injuries registered in a Japanese nationwide multicenter database.

A multicenter study of 1-year mortality and walking capacity after spinal fusion surgery for cervical fracture in elderly patients.

Background: The 1-year mortality and functional prognoses of patients who received surgery for cervical trauma in the elderly remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the rates of, and factors associated with mortality and the deterioration in walking capacity occurring 1 year after spinal fusion surgery for cervical fractures in patients 65 years of age or older.

Methods: Three hundred thirteen patients aged 65 years or more with a traumatic cervical fracture who received spinal fusion surgery were enrolled.

Actual incidence of severe neonatal hypoglycemia in non-risk term neonates: A 10 year survey of all cases in Toyama Prefecture, Japan.

Background: Severe neonatal hypoglycemia may cause irreversible neurological sequelae. Although blood glucose (BG) screening in term neonates without risk factors for hypoglycemia (non-risk neonates) is not recommended in the current guidelines, severe hypoglycemia can occur in such neonates. To evaluate the necessity of BG screening in non-risk neonates, it is important to determine the accurate incidence of severe hypoglycemia in those neonates.

Bilateral simultaneous asymmetric hip fracture without major trauma in an elderly patient: a case report.

Background: Simultaneous bilateral hip fractures without major trauma in the elderly are rare and usually symmetrical. To the best of our knowledge, only two cases of bilateral simultaneous asymmetric hip fracture in the elderly without major trauma have been reported.

Case Presentation: We present the case of a 90-year-old Japanese man with simultaneous bilateral asymmetric hip fractures with trochanteric fracture on the right side and greater trochanteric fracture on the left side.

Influence of laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis and its recurrence on perinatal outcomes.

Purpose: It is unknown whether surgery for endometriosis or recurrence of endometriosis affects obstetric outcomes.

Methods: A total of 208 pregnant women with a history of endometriosis were analyzed. Patients who had endometriomas >3 cm and no history of laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis were defined as non-surgery group ( = 60), while those who had a history of surgery for endometriosis ( = 148) were defined as surgery group.
