A photoinduced reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (photo-RAFT) polymerization technique in the presence of sodium pyruvate (SP) and pyruvic acid derivatives was developed. Depending on the wavelength of light used, SP acted as a biocompatible photoinitiator or promoter for polymerization, allowing rapid open-to-air polymerization in aqueous media. Under UV irradiation (370 nm), SP decomposes to generate CO and radicals, initiating polymerization.

Polymer biocompositions of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) and linear polyurethanes (PU) with aromatic rings were produced by melt-blending at different P3HB/PU weight ratios (100/0, 95/5, 90/10, and 85/15). Polyurethanes have been prepared with 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polyethylene glycols with molar masses of 400 g/mol (PU400), 1000g/mol (PU1000), and 1500 g/mol (PU1500). The compatibility and morphology of the obtained polymer blends were determined by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Rubber blends based on styrene-butadiene rubber, ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber and a combination of both rubbers were cured with different sulfur and peroxide curing systems. In sulfur curing systems, two type of accelerators, namely tetramethylthiuram disulfide, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide, and combinations of both accelerators were used. In peroxide curing systems, dicumyl peroxide, and a combination of dicumyl peroxide with zinc diacrylate or zinc dimethacrylate, respectively, were applied.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of potassium-based emulsifying salts (ES; 2% wt/wt concentration) with different phosphate chain lengths (dipotassium hydrogenphosphate [KHPO; DKP], tetrapotassium diphosphate [KPO; KTPP], pentapotassium triphosphate [KPO; TKPP]) on the physicochemical, viscoelastic, textural, tribological, thermal, and sensory properties of processed cheese (PC; 40% wt/wt DM, 50% wt/wt fat in DM) during a 60d storage period (6°C ± 2°C). On the whole, the hardness of all PC samples increased with the increasing chain length of ES (DKP < TKPP < KTPP) and the prolonging storage period. Moreover, the hardness results were in accordance with those of the rheological analysis.

Poloxamers (P184, P188, and P407) have been investigated as the carrier system for eugenol or thymol. A synergic effect of mixed Poloxamers was proved by enhanced micellar parameters, with a lower critical micelle concentration (about 0.06 mM) and the highest surface adsorption of 9 × 10 mol m for P188/P407.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is considered as an excellent biomaterial for bone grafting and connective tissue replacement. The structural properties of aqueous 1-4 dioxane mixtures are studied by computer simulations of different water and dioxane force field models, from the perspective of illustrating the link between structural properties at the molecular level and measurable properties such as radiation scattering intensities and Kirkwood-Buff integrals (KBIs). A strategy to consistently correct the KBI obtained from simulations is proposed, which allows us to obtain the genuine KBI corresponding to a given pair of molecular species, in the entire concentration range, and without necessitating excessively large system sizes. The application of this method to the aqueous dioxane mixtures, with an all-atom CHARMM dioxane model and 2 water models, namely, SPC/E and TIP3P, allows one to understand the differences in the structure of the corresponding mixtures at the molecular level, particularly concerning the role of the water aggregates and its model dependence.

The development of sustainable materials from the valorization of waste is a good alternative to reducing the negative environmental impact of plastic packaging. The objectives of this study were to develop and characterize pectin-based composite films incorporated with cork or cork with either coffee grounds or walnut shells, as well as to test the films' genotoxicity, antioxidant properties, and biodegradation capacity in soil and seawater. In the context of growing interest in plant-based food products for their potential health benefits and sustainability, this study investigates the effect of mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids application on physico-chemical properties of various plant-based cream products, compared to lecithin application in rice cream. Rheological and textural parameters, colour profile, and colloidal stability were analysed. The application of mono- and diglycerides modified the creams' viscoelastic behaviour, showing a decrease in viscoelasticity across the samples; although in oat-coconut cream resulted in a higher viscoelasticity, indicating the formation of a gel-like structure.

The rapid growth, integration, and miniaturization of electronics have raised significant concerns about how to handle issues with electromagnetic interference (EMI), which has increased demand for the creation of EMI shielding materials. The article deals with the comparison of the bending behavior of cylindrical lattice samples with radially and orthogonally arranged cells made of ABS material. The structures were designed in PTC Creo Parametric 8 software, while four types of lattice structures were evaluated: Rhombus, Cuboidal BCC, Octagon, and Starry, in three material volume fractions: 44, 57, and 70%, together with tubular and rod-shaped samples. The Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technique was chosen for the production of ABS plastic samples.

Based on the prior observation of the trifluoroacetate hypoiodite, CFC(O)OI, demonstrating the largest σ-hole of a neutral halogen bond donor, a series of mono- and bis-carbonyl hypoiodites utilising trifluoromethyl or fluorine substituents at various positions of a parent benzoyl skeleton have been synthesised. The carbonyl hypoiodite complexes were prepared via cation exchange of the silver(I) cations with iodine(I) from the respective silver(I) carboxylates and dicarboxylates as the synthetic precursors. A range of pyridinic Lewis bases of varying nucleophilicities were used to stabilise the carbonyl hypoiodites to further probe their properties.

The electromagnetic interference shielding and microwave attenuation capabilities of ZnO semiconductor nanocomposites have recently been improved using a variety of approaches by correctly modifying their permittivity. To improve microwave attenuation, ZnO semiconductor nanostructures have been combined with graphene, multi-wall carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles and their alloys, two-dimensional MXene, spinel ferrite magnetic nanoparticles, polymer systems, and textiles. This paper covers the opportunities and constraints that these cutting-edge nanocomposites in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption encounter as well as the research progress of ZnO semiconductor-based nanocomposite.
