Background/objectives: The oncological importance of lymphatic, microvascular, and perineural invasions and their association with outcomes in patients with non-functioning pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (NF-PanNEN) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the role of these factors in the prognosis of patients with NF-PanNEN.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 115 patients who underwent curative resection and were pathologically and clinically diagnosed with NF-PanNEN.

Objectives: Glycated albumin (GA) has potential value in the management of people with diabetes; however, to draw meaningful conclusions between clinical studies it is important that the GA values are comparable. This study investigates the standardization of the Norudia Glycated Albumin and Lucica Glycated Albumin-L methods.
Methods: The manufacturer reported imprecision was verified by performing CLSI-EP15-A3 protocol using manufacturer produced controls.

Introduction: High soluble (pro)renin receptor (s[P]RR) level in circulation is reported in obese patients; however, it is unclear which body composition components are responsible for it. In this study, the authors examined blood s(P)RR levels and ATP6AP2 gene expression levels in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT, SAT) in severely obese patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), with the aim of clarifying the relationship with body composition and metabolic factors.
Methods: Seventy five cases who underwent LSG between 2011 and 2015 and were postoperatively followed-up for 12 months at the Toho University Sakura Medical Center were included in the analysis of the cross-sectional survey at baseline, and 33 cases were included in the analysis of the longitudinal survey during the 12 months after LSG.

Background: This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for salvage of previously X-ray-irradiated (XRT) locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC).
Methods: Between September 2005 and December 2017, 77 patients with LRRC were treated with CIRT re-irradiation. All the patients had received prior XRT with a median dose of 50.

Background: Metastasis to lymph nodes is a bad prognostic factor in patients with gallbladder carcinoma who undergo radical cholecystectomy. During the past decade, studies have brought focus on lymph node ratio (LNR) as an additional valuable prognostic factor in these cases. Our research studied the factors that predicted the recurrence of disease and survival of patients with gallbladder carcinoma who were treated with surgical resection, concentrating especially on the lymph nodal status as a prognostic factor and LNR in node-positive T1-T3 cases.

Aims: To clarify the clinical characteristics of IgG4-SC and IgG4-SC without AIP.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed imaging, serology, other organ involvement (OOI) and histology of 872 patients with IgG4-SC who participated in a Japanese nationwide survey in 2019, and compared these items between IgG4-SC with and without AIP.

Purpose: To evaluate the surgical outcomes of patients with gallbladder cancer (GBC) with jaundice due to as-yet unelucidated prognostic factors.
Methods: A total of 348 GBC patients underwent resection at our institute between 1985 and 2016. Of these, 67 had jaundice (serum total bilirubin ≥ 2 mg/dL).

Several years have passed since the clinical diagnostic criteria for IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis 2012 were published. New findings and knowledge have accumulated since then. The Research Committees for IgG4-related Diseases and for Intractable Diseases of the Liver and Biliary Tract, in association with the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan and the Japan Biliary Association, have established a working group consisting of researchers specializing in IgG4-SC and have drawn up new clinical diagnostic criteria for IgG4-SC 2020.

Galactose-deficient immunoglobulin A1 (Gd-IgA1) was recently identified as a critical effector molecule in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Gd-IgA1 is produced by the mucosal immune system. IgAN is thought to develop because of the deposition of a circulating immune-complex containing Gd-IgA1 in the kidney.

IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) is a distinct type of cholangitis frequently associated with autoimmune pancreatitis and currently recognized as a biliary manifestation of IgG4-related disease. Although clinical diagnostic criteria of IgG4-SC were established in 2012, differential diagnosis from primary sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma is sometimes difficult. Furthermore, no practical guidelines for IgG4-SC are available.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of Cryo with endobronchial ultrasonography using a guide sheath (EBUS-GS) for peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs) to assess the volume of specimen, determine DNA sequencing analysis, and evaluate the utility of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE).
Methods: Out of 30 patients assessed for eligibility, 23 were enrolled in this prospective study. The histological diagnostic yield of Cryo was evaluated and the volume was compared to that of trans-bronchial biopsy (TBB).

Background: Transmembrane protein 16A (TMEM16A) is associated with mucus secretion and ion transport in asthma. Clarithromycin (CAM) is reported to inhibit IL-13-induced goblet cell metaplasia. However, the effect of CAM on TMEM16A function and expression remains unclear.

Although patients on long-term hemodialysis frequently develop renal cell carcinoma, mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC) is rare in incidence. Here, we report a case of MTSCC occurring in a patient under hemodialysis. The patient was a 72-year-old man with end stage renal failure due to diabetic nephropathy.

Aims: Steatohepatitic hepatocellular carcinoma (SH-HCC) is a newly proposed concept, which shows histological features of steatohepatitis in HCC lesions, and it is strongly associated with metabolic syndrome (MS) and steatosis/steatohepatitis in non-cancerous lesions. Recently, a substantial number of HCC associated with MS were reported to have developed from pre-existing inflammatory hepatocellular adenoma (HCA). To elucidate the characteristic features of SH-HCC, we clinicopathologically investigated strictly diagnosed SH-HCC and non-SH-HCC (standard HCC).

Background Parkinsons disease is a central nervous system degenerative disorder affecting motor system and characterized by progressive tremor, rigidity, gait abnormalities. Surgical treatment of Parkinsons disease is based on the changes in the basal gangliothalamocortical circuits which is altered in Parkinsons disease. Currently pallidotomy and Deep Brain Stimulation are available modes of surgical treatment of Parkinsons disease.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a common disease affecting younger people and may lead to vision loss. CSC shares phenotypic overlap with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). As recent studies have revealed a characteristic increase of choroidal thickness in CSC, we conducted a genome-wide association study on choroidal thickness in 3,418 individuals followed by TaqMan assays in 2,692 subjects, and we identified two susceptibility loci: rs800292, an established AMD susceptibility polymorphism, and rs3793217 ( = 2.

Methods: The Japanese Heart Rhythm Society requested electrophysiology centers to register the relevant data of patients who underwent AF ablation during 6 months from 2011 to 2015.

Background: The therapeutic goals of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients are to reduce symptoms and prevent severe complications associated with AF. This study compared the efficacy of flecainide versus pilsicainide in reducing the frequency of AF and improving quality of life (QOL) in symptomatic paroxysmal AF patients without structural heart disease.
Methods: The Atrial Fibrillation and Quality Of Life (AF-QOL) study was a prospective, multicenter, randomized, open-label crossover study that compared flecainide and pilsicainide as antiarrhythmic drug therapy.
