Background: Fungal pretreatment for partial separation of lignocellulosic components may reduce lignocellulose recalcitrance during the production of biofuels and biochemicals. Quantitative and qualitative modification of plant lignin through genetic engineering or traditional breeding may also reduce the recalcitrance. This study was conducted to examine the effects of combining these two approaches using three white rot fungi and mulberry wood with an altered lignin structure.

Commensal bacteria affect host health by producing various metabolites from dietary carbohydrates via bacterial glycometabolism; however, the underlying mechanism of action remains unclear. Here, we identified Streptococcus salivarius as a unique anti-obesity commensal bacterium. We found that S.

Most food factories clean and sanitize equipment daily after production using detergents containing benzalkonium chloride (BAC). However, in factories that produce oil and fat-rich foods, it has been discovered that microbes can persist on production equipment.

Fasciola-induced fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease with significant health and economic impacts on humans and livestock. Freshwater Lymnaea snails serve as intermediate hosts, contributing to the increasing prevalence of fascioliasis in cattle in coastal areas. The salinity tolerance of Lymnaea snails was investigated along with their distribution and Fasciola infection rates in both snails and grazing cattle in Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, and Soc Trang provinces in Mekong Delta, Vietnam, where seawater reversely enters into the paddy field during the dry season.

Unlabelled: Incomplete oxidation of glucose by sp. strain CHM43 produces gluconic acid and then 2- or 5-ketogluconic acid. Although 2-keto-D-gluconate (2KG) is a valuable compound, it is sometimes consumed by itself via an unknown metabolic pathway.

Unlabelled: Engineered three-dimensional (3D) tissue culture platforms are useful for reproducing and elucidating complex in vivo biological phenomena. Spheroids, 3D aggregates of living cells, are produced based on physicochemical or microfabrication technologies and are commonly used even in cancer pathology research. However, conventional methods have difficulties in constructing 3D structures depending on the cell types, and require specialized techniques/lab know-how to reproducibly control the spheroid size and shape.

A search for antifungal compounds from the mushroom using a bioassay-guided chromatographic fractionation approach led to the discovery of a novel polyketide harboring a rare 3,3a,9,9a-tetrahydro-1-furo[3,4-]chromen-1-one skeleton. The novel compound was named coprinolide. The inhibitory activity and fungicidal potential of coprinolide were evaluated against five economically important plant-pathogenic fungi.

Acetyl xylan esterase plays a crucial role in the degradation of xylan, the major plant hemicellulose, by liberating acetic acid from the backbone polysaccharides. Acetyl xylan esterase B from Aspergillus oryzae, designated AoAxeB, was biochemically and structurally investigated. The AoAxeB-encoding gene with a native signal peptide was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris as an active extracellular protein.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the collagen fiber structure of the subcutaneous fascia, a connective tissue layer between the skin and epimysium.
Methods: Fascia samples with varying extensibility were examined using biochemical and microscopic methods.
Results: Loose fascia, the more extensible type, displayed sparsely distributed collagen fibers, while dense fascia showed tightly packed collagen fiber bundles.

Green rice leafhopper (GRH, Uhler) is a serious insect pest of rice in the temperate regions of Asia. Myanmar has a high genetic diversity and is located at the center of the origin of rice. To understand the genetic architecture of GRH resistance in Myanmar rice landraces, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed using a diversity panel collected from diverse geographical regions.

Hokkaido-specific malting barley varieties have been developed to improve the grain yield, disease resistance, malting quality, and brewing quality. In this report we describe the breeding and evaluation of brewing quality of a hulled two-row malting barley ( L.) variety 'Satuiku 5 go' lacking lipoxygenase-1 (LOX-1-less).

This case report presents an atypical transverse cervical artery with its detailed anatomy, morphogenesis, and association with the high arch-shaped subclavian artery. The atypical arteries, related arteries, and adjacent cervical and brachial plexuses were macroscopically examined in a 98-year-old Japanese female cadaver donated to The Nippon Dental University for medical education and research. The atypical deep branch of the transverse cervical artery originated from the internal thoracic artery and passed through between the C5 and C6 roots, in close contact with the C5 and C6 junction, to reach the dorsal side of the brachial plexus.

Omics data provide a plethora of quantifiable information that can potentially be used to identify biomarkers targeting the physiological processes and ecological phenomena of organisms. However, omics data have not been fully utilized because current prediction methods in biomarker construction are susceptible to data multidimensionality and noise. We developed OmicSense, a quantitative prediction method that uses a mixture of Gaussian distributions as the probability distribution, yielding the most likely objective variable predicted for each biomarker.

Acetamide is a hepatocarcinogen in rats. We previously revealed that acetamide induces characteristic large micronuclei in rat liver, suggesting the possible involvement of chromosome aberrations in acetamide-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. To elucidate the mechanism of large micronuclei formation, in this study we examined time-dependent changes in rat hepatocytes after administration of acetamide.

Members of the genus are responsible for many important diseases in agricultural and natural ecosystems. causes devastating diseases of oak, and tanoak stands in US forests and larch in the UK. The four evolutionary lineages involved express different virulence phenotypes on plant hosts, and characterization of gene content is foundational to understanding the basis for these differences.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the production of autoantibodies and damage to multiple organs. Glomerulonephritis, a manifestation involving glomerular deposition of immune complexes and complement components, significantly contributes to disease morbidity. Although the endosomal single-stranded RNA sensor TLR7 is known to drive glomerulonephritis by promoting autoantibody production in B cells, the contribution of macrophage TLR7 responses to glomerulonephritis remains poorly understood.

Heat stress negatively affects the reproductive function of in animals and humans. Although a relationship between heat and oxidative stress has been suggested, the underlying mechanism has not been sufficiently examined in reproduction-related cells. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether heat stress induces oxidative stress using a variety of reproduction-related cells including bovine placental and cumulus-granulosa cells, human cell lines derived from cervical and endometrial cancers, and fibroblasts derived from endometrium.

This study evaluated carcass weight and physicochemical properties of loin and leg meat parts of Saanen castrated goats (n = 4) reared by grazing for 5 months in an abandoned rice field with concentrate supplements, comparing with meat of goats (n = 4) reared by confined feeding with grass silage and concentrate. Carcass and meat part weights of goats in the grazing group were lower (p < 0.01) than confined group.
