Background: The previous study on prognosis of preterm premature rupture of fetal membranes (pPROM) near the limit of viability showed various survival rate raging from 26 to 57 %%. This may be partly due to the fact that treatment of prematurely born babies vary from one country to another, or sometimes within a single country. In Japan, resuscitation efforts are made to newborns of early gestational age, normally from 22 weeks of gestation.

Background: The number of hemodialysis (HD) patients is increasing worldwide, and they are at a higher risk of cancer than the general population. Because HD patients are more likely to have inflammation, radiotherapy (RT)-induced adverse effects (AEs) are theoretically expected to be worse for HD patients. Since only a few reports have been published on this subject, we aimed to evaluate the tolerability of RT in HD patients.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are frequently comorbid and, as both are defined as neurodevelopmental disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, simultaneous diagnosis is possible. However, despite the frequency of this comorbid state, its endophenotypic features remain unclear. This study thus aimed to describe the behavioral and emotional problems in boys with comorbid ASD and ADHD using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).

Objectives: We assessed the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) by vaccine dose in children aged 6 months to 12 years for whom two doses are recommended in Japan to ascertain the appropriate vaccine doses.
Methods: VE was assessed according to a test-negative case-control design based on rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) results. Children aged 6 months to 12 years with a fever ≥38 °C who had received an RIDT in outpatient clinics of 24 hospitals were enrolled for all five seasons since 2013/14.

BACKGROUND Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a rare type of extranodal large B-cell lymphoma characterized by involvement of lymphoma cells in the lumina of small blood vessels in various organs. Although many studies have claimed that timely diagnosis and early initiation of chemotherapy are important, the literature on the successful treatment of IVLBCL in elderly patients over the age of 80 years is scarce. CASE REPORT An 82-year-old man presented with abnormal elevation of lactate dehydrogenase at 1605 IU/L and altered mental status, which manifested as forgetfulness, abnormal behavior, and worsening performance status for 2 days.

The vital role of folic acid is to reduce the risk of having a neonate afflicted with neural tube defects. The prevalence of neural tube defects (myelomeningocele and anencephaly) has been reported in an incomplete form over the last 40 years in Japan. We aimed to evaluate the total number of neural tube defects including those delivered or terminated, to clarify the proportion of those terminated, and to internationally compare their prevalence.

We examined the renal pelvic urine culture (RPUC) and stone culture (SC) during ureteroscopy and evaluated their associations with postoperative systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). We prospectively collected data of 224 patients who underwent ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy from March 2015 to December 2017. We examined the bladder urine culture pre-operatively.

Fludarabine enhances the efficacy of Ara-C (cytarabine) by increasing intracellular Ara-C-triphosphate. The FLAG (fludarabine, high-dose Ara-C, supported with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor) regimen has been tested for use in AML patients by other investigators.

In acute myeloid leukemia (AML), () rearrangements are among the most frequent chromosomal abnormalities; however, knowledge of the genetic landscape of -rearranged AML is limited. In this study, we performed whole-exome sequencing (n = 9) and targeted sequencing (n = 56) of samples from pediatric -rearranged AML patients enrolled in the Japanese Pediatric Leukemia/Lymphoma Study Group AML-05 study. Additionally, we analyzed 105 pediatric t(8;21) AML samples and 30 adult -rearranged AML samples.

Background: The RAISE study showed that additional prednisolone improved coronary artery outcomes in patients with Kawasaki disease at high risk of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) resistance. However, no studies have been done to test the steroid regimen used in the RAISE study. We therefore aimed to verify the efficacy and safety of primary IVIG plus prednisolone.

Objectives: To determine changes and trends in the annual incidence and epidemiological aspects of lower urinary tract stones in Japan.
Methods: Data about patients who had been diagnosed by urologists in 2015 with first and recurrent lower urinary tract stones were collected from 301 hospitals approved by the Japanese Board of Urology. The estimated annual incidence according to sex, age and stone composition was compared with previous nationwide surveys between 1965 and 2005.

We analyzed the clinical significance and genetic features of ASXL2 and ZBTB7A mutations, and the alternatively spliced isoform of the RUNX1-RUNX1T1 transcript, which is also called AML1-ETO9a (AE9a), in Japanese CBF-AML patients enrolled in the JALSG AML201 study. ASXL2 and ZBTB7A genes were sequenced using bone marrow samples of 41 AML patients with t(8;21) and 14 with inv(16). The relative expression levels of AE9a were quantified using the real-time PCR assay in 23 AML patients with t(8;21).

Objectives: We assessed the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) in children 6 months to 15 years of age during the 2016/17 season. In addition, we estimated the impact of repeated vaccination in children on VE.
Methods: Our study for VEs in preventing influenza and admission due to influenza were conducted according to a test-negative case-control design (TNCC) based on influenza rapid diagnostic test results.
Gilteritinib, a novel, highly specific, potent fms-like tyrosine kinase 3/AXL inhibitor, demonstrated antileukemic activity in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In this open-label phase 1 study (NCT02181660), Japanese patients (aged ≥18 years) with R/R AML received once-daily gilteritinib, escalating from 20 to 300 mg/d. Primary endpoints were safety/tolerability, including the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and the recommended dose (RD); secondary endpoints were antileukemic activity and pharmacokinetics (PK).

Purpose: The Japan Adult Leukemia Study Group (JALSG) AML201 protocols are regimens for remission induction and consolidation chemotherapy of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and have been widely accepted in Japan since 2001. Management of infectious complications during chemotherapy has a key role in the supportive care of AML patients.
Methods: By using case report forms collected in December 2001 and December 2005, we retrospectively analyzed the infectious complications in adult patients treated by using the JALSG AML201 protocols against AML (excluding promyelocytic leukemia).

Unlabelled: Both traditional case-control studies (TCCSs) and test-negative case-control studies (TNCCSs) are commonly used to assess influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE). To compensate for the fact that observational studies are susceptible to bias, we combined both methods to assess VE in one geographical area during the 2015/2016 season, when influenza A (H1N1)pdm was dominant. Our TNCCS covered 331 children aged 6 months to 15 years who visited our hospital with fever, including 182 with influenza, and our TCCS covered 812 pediatric outpatients aged 6 months to 15 years, including 214 with influenza.
