The Japanese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Management of Sepsis and Septic Shock 2020 (J-SSCG 2020).

The Japanese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Management of Sepsis and Septic Shock 2020 (J-SSCG 2020), a Japanese-specific set of clinical practice guidelines for sepsis and septic shock created as revised from J-SSCG 2016 jointly by the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine, was first released in September 2020 and published in February 2021. An English-language version of these guidelines was created based on the contents of the original Japanese-language version. The purpose of this guideline is to assist medical staff in making appropriate decisions to improve the prognosis of patients undergoing treatment for sepsis and septic shock.

Intraosseous epidermal cyst of the great toe that was difficult to distinguish from chronic osteomyelitis: A case report and literature review.

Obtaining a correct intraosseous epidermal cyst diagnosis is difficult due to the extreme rarity of this cyst. Further, the clinical manifestations and radiographic findings are very similar to those of a malignancy or infection. Early histopathological analysis is required for accurate diagnosis and for avoiding unnecessary antibiotic administration and amputation.

Association of cognitive impairment severity with potentially avoidable readmissions: A retrospective cohort study of 8897 older patients.

Introduction: Understanding the association between cognitive impairment severity and potentially avoidable readmissions (PARs) in older patients may facilitate the identification of at-risk individuals who would benefit from readmission prevention measures.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using claims data linked with routinely collected cognitive impairment assessment results from a general acute care hospital in Tokyo, Japan. Patients were 65 years or age or older who were discharged from the subject hospital to home or a facility between July 2016 and September 2018.

F-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography may help determine better treatment for thigh pain after hip arthroplasty-A case report.

Thigh pain after hip arthroplasty is multifactorial; uncovering its etiology is paramount for optimal treatment. This is the first case where F-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography substantially helped in diagnosing the post-hip arthroplasty persistent thigh pain and appropriate treatment selection. This imaging modality warrants further study and more widespread application.

We investigated whether a collagen marker, tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), was associated with risk of stroke. In a nested case-control study of 953 subjects from the general population, we evaluated determinants of TIMP-1 level and stroke risk.

NaF PET assessment of bone metabolic changes around the femoral canal by intramedullary femoral alignment technique in total knee arthroplasty.

We used the NaF PET scan to assess osteometabolic changes around the distal half of the femoral canal by intramedullary (IM) drill for femoral IM guiding rod insertion in total knee arthroplasty. Gentle IM rod insertion and focused attention can minimize surgical stress-induced biological reaction of the femoral IM canal.
