Out of 211 patients with the Stage IV gastric cancer who survived gastrectomy, 105 died within one year (short-lived group) and 40 survived more than two years (long-lived group). The grades of the four factors, P, H, N and S, were compared between them. Combination of P0 and H0 was seen less often in the former group than in the latter (48% vs.

The prognosis of early gastric cancer (EGC) is generally excellent, however, EGC is not an exception to recurrence. In order to know what type of EGC is liable to recur, long-term results were studied in 304 cases of resection. The cumulative 10-year survival rate was poorer in patients with positive lymph nodes than in those with negative nodes (52.

Compressed air works have been used as the safest construction work for the basic underground or underwater compressed shield or caisson works in Japan; however, the workers who were exposed to the compressed fields must have put themselves at risk of decompression sickness. Decompression sickness is generally considered to be due to the bubble effects and the bubbles originate from the supersaturated gas dissolved in the blood and other tissues. The standard decompression schedule by the Ministry of Labor has been practically applied at the end of compressed air works, and the laborers decompress slowly from the bottom pressure to the surface according to the schedule.

The intranasal pressure at the opening of the auditory tube was compared by Valsalva's method with that of normal adults under atmospheric pressure to find the auditory tubal function of divers often exposed to hyperbaric conditions. It was found that the mean auditory tube opening pressure was higher in professional divers than in normal adults who had never been exposed to hyperbaric pressure. There are two ways of accommodating human auditory tubal ventilation: active opening and passive opening--the former is predominant in adults, the latter in children.

A rat brain cDNA library was screened by using as a probe a fragment of cDNA encoding the alpha-subunit of human Na+,K+-ATPase. Two different cDNA clones were obtained and analyzed. One of them was concluded to be a cDNA encoding the alpha-subunit of the weakly ouabain-sensitive rat kidney-type Na+,K+-ATPase.

The plasmid pNR333 is a kanamycin-resistant, deletion derivative of pNR113 with an extremely high copy number in Escherichia coli and in Proteus mirabilis. In order to determine the usefulness of pNR333 as a replication gene of vector, the genes encoding chloramphenicol acetyl-transferase (CAT) and beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) were cloned individually into both pNR333 and other low-copy-number plasmids. The expression of the cloned genes was compared by measuring the specific activity of each enzyme and the amounts of the proteins produced.

A congenital double-hearted chick embryo was found among 16,171 embryos, which was at the 11 somite stage of development. The pacemaking activity of its double heart was monitored simultaneously from 9 different regions by optical methods. The right and left half hearts were tubular, and in both, spontaneous rhythmical action potentials and beating were detected, and differences were detected in their rhythms.
