Calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs), used as immunosuppressants, have revolutionized transplantation medicine with their strong suppressive activity on alloreactive T lymphocytes; however, they may also cause various adverse effects, including an increased risk for infection and nephrotoxicity. Regulatory T (Treg) cells can complement the deleterious side effects of CNIs with their effective Ag-specific suppressive activities. However, several studies have shown that CNIs suppress Treg cell differentiation.

Japan has adopted community-based integrated long-term care, which has shifted the burden of care from institutions to the home. However, family caregivers have received less attention compared with care recipients. Many family caregivers are also older adults, and it is important that caregivers receive appropriate support to alleviate the burden of care.

Preferential Induction of the T Cell Auxiliary Signaling Molecule B7-H3 on Synovial Monocytes in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

J Biol Chem

February 2016

From the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and the BK21Plus Biomedical Science Project, and the Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul 110-799, South Korea, Biomedical Sciences and the Cancer Research Institute, Ischemic/Hypoxic Disease Institute, and Institute of Infectious Diseases, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital Biomedical Research Institute, Seoul 110-799, South Korea

B7-H3, a newly identified B7 family member, has functional duality as a co-stimulator and co-inhibitor that fine-tunes T cell-mediated immune responses. Given that B7-H3 expression on human monocytes and dendritic cells is enhanced by inflammatory cytokines, its potential inmmunoregulatory role at sites of inflammation has been suggested. Further, monocytes play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of various inflammatory disorders including autoimmune diseases; however, the immunological role of B7-H3 in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been defined.

Quantitative magnetic resonance spectroscopy of schizophrenia: relationship between decreased N-acetylaspartate and frontal lobe dysfunction.

Psychiatry Clin Neurosci

June 2006

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University School of Medicine, and Asai Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.

Numerous studies using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) have detected signal changes in schizophrenia. However, most studies investigated relative concentrations such as N-acetylaspartate/creatine plus phosphocreatine (NAA/Cre) and choline-containing compounds/creatine plus phosphocreatine (Cho/Cre), and individual metabolite concentrations have not been clarified. Using absolute quantification measurement of 1H-MRS, the aim of the present paper was to demonstrate the changes in metabolite concentrations in the frontal lobe of patients with chronic schizophrenia.
