Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University (Institute of Science Tokyo), 1-5-45 Yushima Bunkyo-Ku, Tokyo, 113-8519, Japan.

Background: The rapid decline in ovarian function associated with menopause promotes osteoclast differentiation and increases bone resorption, disrupting of bone homeostasis and increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a polysaccharide ubiquitously present in the connective tissues. Recent reports indicate that high-molecular-weight HA (HMW-HA) promotes osteoblast proliferation, enhances alkaline phosphatase activity and mineral deposition, and promotes the expression of bone differentiation markers, such as Runx2 and osteocalcin.

A 38-year-old woman with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus presented at our university hospital with fever, fatigue, and oral pain and was urgently admitted based on a diagnosis of septic shock. Initially, dental infection was suspected based on the symptoms and clinical presentation of purpura accompanied by severe tenderness along the marginal gingiva in the maxilla and mandible. However, subsequent investigations, including an oral examination, radiographic studies, and blood cultures, ruled out dental infection as the cause of the septic shock.

We present a 76-year-old man with cryptogenic new-onset refractory status epilepticus (C-NORSE) with an initial abnormal signal in the nucleus accumbens and a remarkable hyperintense signal on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the bilateral basal ganglia (BG). His status epilepticus did not respond to most anti-epileptic therapies or immunotherapies, and he died of sepsis. An autopsy revealed severe neuronal loss and hypertrophic astrocytes in the BG and limbic system, with no signs of inflammation or malignancy.

Influence of loop diuretics on denosumab-induced hypocalcaemia in osteoporosis: a retrospective observational analysis.

J Pharm Health Care Sci

September 2024

Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, Mie University Hospital, Mie University, 2-174 Edobashi, Tsu, Mie, 514-8507, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated whether the combination of denosumab (used for osteoporosis) and loop diuretics, which increase calcium excretion in urine, leads to hypocalcaemia (low calcium levels) in patients.
  • - An analysis of adverse drug event reports indicated a significant association between loop diuretics and an increased risk of hypocalcaemia in patients taking denosumab, with a reporting odds ratio suggesting a strong correlation.
  • - It was found that higher baseline calcium levels and calcium/vitamin D supplementation could lower the risk of hypocalcaemia, while the effect of denosumab on calcium levels was more pronounced when combined with loop diuretics.

Necroptosis in alveolar epithelial cells drives lung inflammation and injury caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis

December 2024

Department of Rheumatology, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), Tokyo, Japan. Electronic address:

COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, results in irreversible or fatal lung injury. We assumed that necroptosis of virus-infected alveolar epithelial cells (AEC) could promote local inflammation and further lung injury in COVID-19. Since CD8+ lymphocytes induced AEC cell death via cytotoxic molecules such as FAS ligands, we examined the involvement of FAS-mediated cell death in COVID-19 patients and murine COVID-19 model.
