Article Synopsis
  • Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a rare complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and while studies in the West suggest similar severity to the general population, this is less explored in Eastern countries using biologics.
  • This study analyzed data from 1138 AP admissions, comparing IBD patients (divided into ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) to those without IBD, finding lower rates of severe AP in IBD groups.
  • The results indicated no significant difference in severe AP rates between Crohn's disease patients and non-IBD groups, and the use of biologics did not seem to affect AP severity, suggesting further research is needed.

Department of Molecular Endocrinology and Metabolism, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on primary bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (PBMAH), a rare cause of Cushing syndrome, and how its circulating microRNA (miRNA) expression differs from that of non-functioning and cortisol-producing adrenocortical adenomas.
  • Researchers analyzed plasma samples from patients with PBMAH, non-functioning adrenocortical adenoma (NFA), and cortisol-producing adrenocortical adenoma (CPA), finding 135 distinct miRNAs that differentiate PBMAH from the other types.
  • The results indicate that PBMAH has a unique miRNA expression profile, with two subtypes identified, suggesting a variety in its underlying pathophysiology.

March 2023

Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Health Economics, School of Public Health, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8655, Japan.

Purpose: Although parapharyngeal and retropharyngeal abscesses are potentially fatal deep neck abscesses, there is limited evidence for the treatment courses for adult patients with these abscesses. We aimed to describe the practice patterns and clinical outcomes of adult patients undergoing an emergency surgery for parapharyngeal or retropharyngeal abscesses using a nationwide database.

Materials And Methods: We identified patients aged ≥18 years who underwent emergency surgery for parapharyngeal (para group, n = 1148) or retropharyngeal (retro group, n = 734) abscesses from July 2010 to March 2020, using a nationwide inpatient database.

Heart failure is a major disease, and its 30-day readmission (readmission within 30-day after discharge) negatively impacts patients and society. Thus, we need to stratify the risk and prevent readmission. We aimed to investigate risk factors associated with 30-day readmission and examine the impact of length of hospital stay (LOS) on 30-day readmission.
