Article Synopsis
  • Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a surgical procedure that helps improve hip joint coverage in patients with hip dysplasia to prevent arthritis development, but the effects on 3D acetabular coverage and long-term outcomes are not fully understood.
  • This study examined 46 patients and utilized pre- and post-operative imaging to analyze changes in acetabular coverage and determine factors leading to total hip arthroplasty (THA) and osteoarthritis progression.
  • Results indicated an increase in acetabular coverage after PAO, with a 98% survival rate over 10 years, but highlighted that insufficient superior acetabular coverage post-surgery significantly increased the likelihood of requiring THA and experiencing osteoarthritis progression

Background: Japan has four types of intensive care units (ICUs) that are divided into two categories according to the management fee charged per day: ICU management fees 1 and 2 (ICU1/2) (equivalent to high-intensity staffing) and 3 and 4 (ICU3/4) (equivalent to low-intensity staffing). Although ICU1/2 charges a higher rate than ICU3/4, no cost-effectiveness analysis has been performed for ICU1/2. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of ICU1/2 compared with those of ICU3/4.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces Days of Antibiotic Spectrum Coverage (DASC) as a metric for measuring inpatient antimicrobial consumption in Japan, comparing it to Days of Therapy (DOT).
  • It analyzed data from over 26 million hospital admissions from 2014 to 2018, finding significant increases in both DOT and DASC, but no significant change in the DASC/DOT ratio.
  • Results suggest that using DASC alone may not fully reflect antibiotic stewardship trends; combining DOT and DASC/DOT provides a better evaluation of antimicrobial practices in hospitals.
