A nationwide certification system to increase the safety of highly advanced hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery.

Background: To ensure that highly advanced hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery (HBPS) is performed safely, the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (JSHBPS) board certification system for expert surgeons established a safety committee to monitor surgical safety.

Methods: We investigated postoperative mortality rates based on summary reports of numbers and outcomes of highly advanced HBPS submitted annually by the board-certified training institutions from 2012 to 2019. We also analyzed summary reports on mortality cases submitted by institutions with high 90-day post-HBPS mortality rates and recommended site visits and surveys as necessary.

Analyzing Chronological Change in Postoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Results in Patients With Kienböck's Disease by Using an Original Grading System.

Background and objective Signal changes in MRI for Kienböck's disease have only been qualitatively assessed so far. In light of this, we proposed a new grading system for quantitative analysis with an ordinal scale. Methods The study included 31 patients (17 men, 14 women) with Kienböck's disease.

Middle mesenteric artery: Angiographic and three-dimensional computed tomography findings.

The middle mesenteric artery, also known as the third mesenteric artery, is a very rare anomaly. Several anatomical variations of middle mesenteric artery have been reported; in these reports, the right colic artery and/or middle colic artery often originate directly from the aorta. Here, we report a middle mesenteric artery in which the middle colic artery originated directly from the abdominal aorta.

Introduction of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation on Ninth Day of Ventilator Management for Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome due to COVID-19: A Case Report.

The reported case is of a 68-year-old man who was admitted to the ICU at our tertiary care medical center with severe COVID-19. He was admitted to the ICU due to a worsening respiratory condition during his hospitalization at the same medical center, which included the development of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Ventilator management was started with alveolar protection in mind.

A Rare Case of Chest Wall Castleman's Disease with Calcification.

Castleman's disease with calcification of the chest wall is very rare, and there have been few reports of such cases to date. A 57-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for a tumor with calcification on her left lateral chest wall, which was detected on chest computed tomography. Findings of her chest magnetic resonance imaging suggested schwannoma or a solitary fibrous tumor, and therefore, we performed surgery for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Evaluation of the Risk of Infection Using a Serum Bile Acid Profile.

Since intestinal secondary bile acids (BAs) prevent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), the serum BA profile may be a convenient biomarker for CDI susceptibility in human subjects. To verify this hypothesis, we investigated blood samples from 71 patients of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the time of admission (prior to antibiotic use and CDI onset). Twelve patients developed CDI during hospitalization, and the other 59 patients did not.

Congenital antithrombin (AT) III deficiency has a high incidence of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism due to reduced anticoagulation. In this study, we report a case of a patient who experienced cardiac arrest due to pulmonary embolism after emergency posterior spinal fusion for acute paraplesia due to a metastatic spinal tumor associated with AT III deficiency. A 49-year-old man with a history of familial AT III deficiency visited our hospital due to difficulty in walking caused by a progressive paralysis of the lower limbs.

Safety Assessment of Ultrasound-Assisted Intravesical Chemotherapy in Normal Dogs: A Pilot Study.

Intravesical chemotherapy after transurethral resection is a treatment option in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Temporary Stenting for Anastomotic Stenosis after Tracheal Resection of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: A Case Report.

A 51-year-old man who noticed discomfort in the pharynx was found to have a tracheal tumor on physical examination. He was diagnosed as having adenoid cystic carcinoma by a transbronchial biopsy and underwent tracheal segmental resection via a collar incision. He was additionally treated with radiation therapy owing to a positive surgical margin, and he subsequently developed anastomotic tracheal stenosis.

We herein report a case of empyema necessitans that presented as a subcutaneous chest wall abscess caused by (), an important anaerobic periodontal pathogen, in a 74-year-old woman with periodontitis. This study examined the effect of taurine on the overtime dynamics of blood glucose concentration (BGC) during endurance exercise in rats. Male F344 rats were subjected to transient treadmill exercise until exhaustion following 3 weeks of taurine supplementation or non-supplementation (TAU and CON groups).

Preoperative Predictions of Distal Screw Length for the Osteosynthesis of Distal Radius Fractures.

The objective of this study was to clarify whether anteroposterior dimension of the radius along the screw axis of a fixed angle volar locking plate (VLP) can be predicted from the width of the radius on the VLP. Sixty-nine wrists in 68 patients with distal radius fractures that underwent fixation with a fixed angle VLPs were evaluated. All patients underwent pre- and postoperative computed tomographic scans of the distal radius.

Differential Effect of Non-Purified and Semi-Purified Standard Diets on Kynurenine and Peripheral Metabolites in Male C57BL/6J Mice.

The kynurenine (Kyn) pathway plays crucial roles in several inflammation-induced disorders such as depression. In this study, we measured Kyn and other related molecules in the blood plasma, brain, and urine of male C57BL/6J mice (B6) fed non-purified (MF) and semi-purified (AIN-93G and AIN-93M) standard rodent diets. Mice fed MF had increased plasma Kyn levels compared with those on AIN93-based diets, as well as decreased hippocampal Kyn levels compared with those fed AIN-93G.

We encountered a girl and her mother with CDPX2-compatible phenotypes including punctiform calcification in the neonatal period of the girl, and asymmetric limb shortening and ichthyosis following the Blaschko lines in both subjects.
