Dysbiosis in the intestinal microflora can affect the gut production of microbial metabolites, and toxic substances can disrupt the barrier function of the intestinal wall, leading to the development of various diseases. Decreased levels of Clostridium subcluster XIVa (XIVa) are associated with the intestinal dysbiosis found in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and infection (CDI). Since XIVa is a bacterial group responsible for the conversion of primary bile acids (BAs) to secondary BAs, the proportion of intestinal XIVa can be predicted by determining the ratio of deoxycholic acid (DCA)/[DCA + cholic acid (CA)] in feces orserum.

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Nippon Medical School, 1-1-5Bunkyo-Ku, SendagiTokyo, 113-8603, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Tricuspid regurgitation pressure gradient (TRPG) measurement via echocardiography is critical for diagnosing portopulmonary hypertension (PoPH) in cirrhotic patients, and this study focuses on identifying factors linked to high TRPG levels.
  • Among 486 patients analyzed, 10.5% had TRPG values of 35 mmHg or higher, with factors such as being female, experiencing shortness of breath, and higher levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) being significant indicators.
  • A scoring model was developed to predict high TRPG risk, demonstrating good accuracy and could help select patients who would benefit from further echocardiography investigations.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-speed non-invasive cross-sectional imaging technique. Although its imaging speed is high, three-dimensional high-spatial-sampling-density imaging of tissues with a wide field-of-view (FOV) is challenging. We employed convolved Lissajous and slow circular scanning patterns to extend the FOV of retinal OCT imaging with a 1-µm, 100-kHz-sweep-rate swept-source OCT prototype system.

Introduction: Pembrolizumab is a programmed death-ligand 1 inhibitor that was initially indicated for monotherapy in patients with advanced lung cancer. The Japanese Lung Cancer Society conducted an observational study on pembrolizumab using confirmative data obtained through postmarketing all-case surveillance (PMACS), which was performed by a pharmaceutical company under the Japanese law in 2017.

Methods: This multicenter observational study was conducted by the Japanese Lung Cancer Society using PMACS data with the newly created central registration system regarding patients with NSCLC who received pembrolizumab monotherapy between February 1, 2017 and June 30, 2017; a new database was created by adding the clinical information regarding prognosis for 3 years after therapy to the existing data collected by PMACS.

Background: Severe spinal deformity is a risk factor for proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD). However, standing X-ray imaging in patients with dynamic spinal imbalance can underestimate the risk of PJK because of compensation mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate whether preoperative dynamic spinal alignment can be a predictive factor for PJK.

The oxysterol 27-hydroxycholesterol (27HC) promotes the proliferation of breast cancer cells as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), but it is mostly produced by alveolar macrophages . The present study evaluated hypothesis that 27HC may also promote the proliferation of lung cancer cells. In the tumor and nontumor regions of lung tissue from 23 patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent lung cancer surgery, we compared the 27HC content and its synthetic and catabolic enzyme expressions ( and ), the expressions of the estrogen receptor (ER) gene and its target gene by using high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS), real-time RT-PCR, and immunohistochemical staining.
