Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the effectiveness of serum type 4 collagen 7S (COL4-7S) compared to the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) score in detecting liver fibrosis in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
  • Among 1,368 patients, 794 were analyzed, revealing that both COL4-7S and ELF scores rise with increasing fibrosis, but COL4-7S showed significantly better performance for identifying advanced fibrosis (≥2) especially in diabetic patients.
  • Overall, COL4-7S proved to be at least as effective as the ELF score in diagnosing advanced liver disease in MASLD patients.

Background: Wild-type (WT) mice fed a conventional high-fat/high-sucrose diet (HFHSD) rarely develop metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with HCC. Because mouse bile acid (BA) is highly hydrophilic, we hypothesized that making it hydrophobic would lead to MASH with HCC.

Methods: Eleven-week-old WT and Cyp2a12/Cyp2c70 double knockout (DKO) mice were divided into two groups, including one which was fed a normal chow diet, and one which was fed an HFHSD.

Visceral disseminated varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection is a severe complication, characterized by a notably high mortality rate. Herein, we present a case of a 36-year-old-man involving visceral disseminated VZV infection that emerged during remission induction therapy involving high-dose prednisolone (PSL), mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and hydroxychloroquine for lupus nephritis. Two months after starting the immunosuppressive therapy, he experienced a rapid onset of severe upper abdominal pain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on finding the best screw insertion angles for polyaxial volar locking plates (VLP) to prevent joint penetration in distal radius fractures.
  • Researchers used 30 X-rays and CT scans of healthy wrists to assess the optimal plate positions and their relationship to the transverse diameter of the radius.
  • The findings indicate that the most distal screw position varies with screw angle and increases in proximity to the articular surface as the radius's transverse diameter increases, providing crucial information for preoperative planning.

Infections associated with percutaneous pinning of the fingers occur in a certain percentage of cases; however, osteomyelitis rarely leads to more severe suppurative arthritis of the hand. A 26-year-old woman presented with scapholunate dissociation and underwent percutaneous pinning. Although some signs of infection were found around the pin site at five weeks, the pins were removed seven weeks postoperatively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how childhood nurturing experiences impact adult depression through subjective social status and personality traits, specifically neuroticism.
  • It involved a survey of 404 adults and used statistical analyses to show that both nurturing and subject social status influence neuroticism, which in turn affects depressive symptoms.
  • Findings suggest that understanding these relationships may help clarify the origins of depression and how early life experiences shape mental health in adulthood.

Background/objectives: We previously reported that traction magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the elbow without arthrography increases the width of the radiocapitellar joint (RC) and improves articular cartilage visibility. However, the effects of axial traction on different age groups have not yet been evaluated. We hypothesized that the effect of traction would decrease as the participants' age increased.

Association of Serum Bile Acid Profile with Diet and Physical Activity Habits in Japanese Middle-Aged Men.

Nutrients

October 2024

Department of Human Immunology and Nutrition Science, Graduate School of Medical Science, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Kyoto 6028566, Japan.

Background/objectives: Circulating bile acid (BA) profiles change with lifestyle and are closely related to intestinal BA metabolisms such as deconjugation and conversion to secondary BAs. The composition of BA in the blood is involved in systemic nutrient metabolism and intestinal health. Herein, we explored the associations of lifestyle and physical fitness with the circulating BA profile of middle-aged men.

Background/aim: Patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) who obtain a pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy have an improved prognosis. Lymphocyte-predominant breast cancer is more likely to respond to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Here, we investigated the correlation between tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in pre-treatment biopsy specimens from patients with TNBC in relation to response to NAC.

Preoperative planning is important for the osteosynthesis of distal radius fractures. Challenges arise for patients presenting with bilateral wrist injuries or a history of contralateral wrist injuries. In such cases, the estimation of the distal radius morphology and the determination of the plate size from the preoperative physical characteristics could prove beneficial.

Background: Polymyxin-B direct hemoperfusion (PMX-DHP) is an endotoxin adsorption column-based blood purification therapy. Since one of the most potent effects of PMX-DHP is blood pressure elevations, it may be the most effective when it is introduced at the time when the need for vasopressors is the greatest, which, in turn, may reduce mortality.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted at 24 ICUs in Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Development of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) can complicate cancer treatment, leading to dose reductions or stopping therapy; Goshajinkigan (GJG), a traditional Japanese medicine, may help reduce these symptoms.
  • A study with 55 ovarian cancer patients tested two groups: one started GJG after experiencing grade 2 neuropathy, while the other took it a week before chemotherapy; the main goals were to assess sensory neuropathy severity and pain levels.
  • Results showed that patients starting GJG early (Group B) had fewer pain complaints, lower reliance on pain medications, and less persistent neuropathy six months later, suggesting that preventive use of GJG could be beneficial, but more research is needed for confirmation
