We had the opportunity to dissect an autopsy case who had developed a rare portal collateral pathway due to increased portal pressure resulting from liver cirrhosis and simultaneous abnormal left gastric venous distribution. The portal collateral pathway consisted of a well-developed communicating branch located between the left renal vein and the left gastric vein. The left gastric vein did not merge into the portal vein, but directly entered the liver after bifurcating near the hepatic hilum.

We report a 15-year-old boy with chronic myelogenous leukemia who received unrelated bone marrow transplantation (uBMT) after surgical resection of cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The incidence of cerebral hemorrhage caused by rupture of cerebral ABM in cases of BMT is uncertain. However, since the risk of rupture of AVM was supposed to increase due to both severe thrombocytopenia after intensive chemotherapy and increased intracranical pressure because of total body irradiation (TBI) as preconditioning therapy for BMT, we have first carried out surgical resection of the cerebral AVM, and subsequently performed uBMT.

A high-porosity structure facilitates endothelialization of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts. The mechanism for endothelial coverage, however, has been controversial. This study was designed to clarify the healing mechanisms of high-porosity PTFE grafts.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficiency of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of salivary gland masses.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively examined 19 salivary gland masses that were pathologically diagnosed by surgical operation or biopsy. We obtained T1- and T2-weighted images on MRI, performed dynamic studies on each mass and examined the correlation between enhancement patterns and pathological findings.

In this report, 15 cases using straight staple (group A) and 35 cases using barbed staple (group B) were compared for the purpose of investigating efficacy for median sternal closure. The staples were placed by a Stapilizer powered metaphyseal staple system following partial transsternal fixation with two wires. As a means of assessing the status of back out, which is a major cause of poor fixation, the back out rate (BOR) was measured on lateral sternal radiographies.

A suitable medium for the transport of Pasteurella multocida in nasal specimens from rabbits was investigated by using pure cultures of the organism and nasal swabs from infected rabbits. First, the ability of eight transport media to preserve the viabilities of P. multocida strains isolated from rabbits was studied.

To establish the prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis and its relation to aging in Japanese population, 270 participants in voluntary health screening at our hospital were studied with 7.5 MHz B-mode ultrasonography and accelerated plethysmography (APG), and their levels of serum lipids were measured. The subjects consisted of 84 people in the fifth decade of life, 89 in the sixth decade, 67 in the seventh decade, and 30 in the eighth decade.

Ultra rapid injection of isotonic sodium chloride after the injection of contrast medium may make it possible to clearly distinguish between the arterial phase and the portal phase. This method could improve the detectability of hepatocellular carcinoma on double phase dynamic spiral CT. A time-density analysis of the aorta and the portal vein was carried out according to the following 2 protocols (5 cases each).

The central cervical nucleus (CCN) of the cat receives input from upper cervical muscle afferents, particularly primary spindle afferents. Its axons cross in the spinal cord, and while in the contralateral restiform body give off collaterals to the vestibular nuclei. In order to study the connections between CCN axons and vestibular neurons, we stimulated the area of the CCN in decerebrate cats while recording intra- or extracellularly from neurons in the contralateral vestibular nuclei.

Wound contraction and epithelialization occur much faster in animals than in humans. Therefore it is sometimes not valid to apply the results of animal wound healing studies to humans. Hairless descendants of Mexican hairless dogs (HD-MHD) have attracted attention because their skin characteristics approximate those of humans.

It is unknown to what degree electrical injury causes cardiac muscle damage. We used standard clinical methods and varying combinations of 201Tl scintigraphy (TI), 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy, echocardiography, 99mTc-RBC angiography, and coronary catheterization to evaluate five patients with high-tension electrical injuries for cardiac damage. The first follow-up examination was performed within 2 months of injury, and the second follow-up was performed more than 6 months after the first follow-up.

Using immunocytochemistry we have analyzed 8 pituitary oncocytomas, 14 null cell adenomas, and 2 oncocytomas of the parotid gland (Warthin's tumor). The proportions of adenoma cells that are positive for mitochondrial protein (MP), cytochrome oxidase (COX), and manganese-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) were significantly higher in pituitary oncocytomas than in null cell adenomas (MP P < 0.001, COX P < 0.

We therefore studied the prognostic utility of clinical and laboratory findings. A group of 168 elderly patients (70-97 years of age) with chronic diseases who were admitted to Kashiwazaki Kosei Hospital was studied.

Studies with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) have shown temporoparietal (TP) hypoperfusion in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We evaluated the utility of this findings in the diagnosis of AD. SPECT images with 123I-iodoamphetamine were analyzed qualitatively by a rater without knowledge of the subject's clinical status.

Background: Papillary renal cell carcinomas (PRCCs) are genotypically distinct from nonpapillary renal cell carcinomas.
Methods: We studied the clinical, pathomorphological, immunohistochemical features in 34 PRCCs and 7 papillary renal adenomas. Immunohistochemical studies were performed using lectins and antibodies against cytokeratins, epithelial membrane antigen and Tamm-Horsfall protein.

In order to evaluate the difference in pharmacological mechanism between midazolam and propofol, we focused on the interaction between dopaminergic and GABAergic neurons in the striatum because of its important role in the regulation of motor system and arousal response, and examined these inhibitory effects on dopamine (DA) release induced by high-K from the rat striatal slice using the fast-cyclic voltammetry method. Between 0.1 and 200 nmol, the standard curve of DA was linear.

We have investigated the development of the Harderian glands of Japanese white rabbits from birth to 4 months of age. Although two types of secretory cells comprise the glandular epithelium of the pink and white lobes in fully developed glands, the time of neonatal appearance is different between the two. Cells consisting of the pink lobe first appear on the third day of life, while cells of the white appear around seventh day of life.

A 31-year-old man was referred to our hospital for the management of progressive diffuse alveolar hemorrhage associated with renal dysfunction. Leukocytoclastic vasculitis was shown by skin biopsy and crescentic glomerulonephritis was also detected, in addition to positivity for proteinase 3-specific anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (PR3-ANCA). The patient was diagnosed as a rare case of PR3-ANCA-positive pulmonary-renal vasculitic syndrome without granulomatous lesions.

Neuronal connections and pathways underlying sacculocollic reflexes were studied by intracellular recordings from neck extensor and flexor motoneurons in decerebrate cat. Bipolar electrodes were placed within the left saccular nerve, whereas other branches of the vestibular nerve were removed in the inner ear. To prevent spread of stimulus current to other branches of the vestibular nerve, the saccular nerve and the electrodes were covered with warm semisolid paraffin-Vaseline mixture.

A previously reported highly sensitive assay for measuring telomerase activity on cell and tissue extracts indicates that most human tumor tissues, but not cells adjacent to tumors, have detectable telomerase activity. Although this assay has provided a significant amount of information about the presence or absence of telomerase activity, it does not indicate whether all cells within a tumor have telomerase activity or whether only a subset does. The present report demonstrates the ability to advance this technology to an in situ assay.
