Objective Stool reflect our dietary and nutritional status as well as the characteristics of gut microbiota; thus, stool can be a convenient, noninvasive index for the evaluation of physical health and nutritional intake. However, there are few studies on appropriate tools for comprehensive and easy-to-perform objective assessments of stool. Therefore, there is a need for an effective questionnaire to accurately ascertain daily bowel movement patterns ("usual evacuation") and stool characteristics.

We recently uncovered an association between spinal osteoarthritis and height loss that was independent of incident vertebral fracture. However, the optimal cut-off value of historical height loss (HHL) for discriminating spinal osteoarthritis has not been reported. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the implications of HHL for prevalent vertebral fracture, spinal osteoarthritis, and other co-morbidities in postmenopausal women from the Nagano Cohort Study.

Although associations among obesity, adipocytokines, and bone mineral density have been reported, the influence of adipocytokines on osteoporotic fractures remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the impact of the adipocytokines leptin and adiponectin on the risk of incident vertebral and long-bone fractures in postmenopausal women. Clinical data were obtained from the retrospective Nagano Cohort Study of outpatients followed at a single primary care institute in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, between 1993 and 2018.

Background: Maternal dietary exposures are considered to influence the development of infant allergies through changes in the composition of breast milk. Cohort studies have shown that ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in breast milk may have a beneficial effect on the preventing of allergies in infants; however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated. We investigated how the maternal intake of dietary ω3 PUFAs affects fatty acid profiles in the breast milk and their pups and reduced the incidence of allergic diseases in the pups.

Azorhizobium caulinodans, a kind of rhizobia, has a reb operon encoding pathogenic R-body components, whose expression is usually repressed by a transcription factor PraR. Mutation on praR induced a high expression of reb operon and the formation of aberrant nodules, in which both morphologically normal and shrunken host cells were observed. Histochemical GUS analyses of praR mutant expressing reb operon-uidA fusion revealed that the bacterial cells within the normal host cells highly expressed the reb operon, but rarely produced R-bodies.

For the complete structure elucidation of an endogenous sperm-activating and -attracting factor isolated from eggs of the ascidian Ascidia sydneiensis ( Assydn-SAAF), its two possible diastereomers with respect to C-25 were synthesized. Starting from ergosterol, the characteristic steroid backbone was constructed by using an intramolecular pinacol coupling reaction and stereoselective reduction of a hydroxy ketone as key steps, and the side chain was introduced by Julia-Kocienski olefination. Comparison of the NMR data of the two diastereomers with those of the natural product led to the elucidation of the absolute configuration as 25 S; thus the complete structure was determined and the first synthesis of Assydn-SAAF was achieved.

Periods of skeletal muscle disuse, for example due to a sedentary lifestyle or bed rest, are associated with aging and can lead to muscle atrophy. We previously found that the flavan 3-ol fraction derived from cocoa (FL) enhanced energy expenditure with metabolic changes in skeletal muscle. In the present study, we examined the effect of FL on disuse muscle atrophy induced by hindlimb suspension in mice.
