Geocultural differences in pre-schooler sleep profiles and family practices: an analysis of pooled data from 37 countries.

Study Objectives: To examine 1) multidimensional sleep profiles in pre-schoolers (3-6 years) across geocultural regions and 2) differences in sleep characteristics and family practices between Majority World regions (Pacific Islands, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America) and the Minority World (the Western world).

Methods: Participants were 3507 pre-schoolers from 37 countries. Nighttime sleep characteristics and nap duration (accelerometer: n=1950) and family practices (parental questionnaire) were measured.

Relative age effect on the physical activity and sedentary behavior in children and adolescents aged 10 to 18 years old: a cross-sectional study in Japan.

Background: Few studies have shown that relatively younger children and adolescents (those born later in the same school year) were less likely to engage in physical activity in a phenomenon termed the relative age effect. Although these studies mainly targeted elementary and middle school students, no study has reported on the relative age effect on physical activity in ordinary high school students. Moreover, the relative age effect on sedentary behavior might show an opposite association with physical activity.

Data-Driven Cutoff Selection for the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Depression Screening Tool.

Importance: Test accuracy studies often use small datasets to simultaneously select an optimal cutoff score that maximizes test accuracy and generate accuracy estimates.

Objective: To evaluate the degree to which using data-driven methods to simultaneously select an optimal Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) cutoff score and estimate accuracy yields (1) optimal cutoff scores that differ from the population-level optimal cutoff score and (2) biased accuracy estimates.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This study used cross-sectional data from an existing individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA) database on PHQ-9 screening accuracy to represent a hypothetical population.

Electrical taste technologies designed to modify the taste of foods have recently garnered increasing recognition as a viable strategy to regulate excessive salt intake. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) is a method used in non-invasive electrical taste stimulation, which involves the placement of electrodes near the mouth (not inside the mouth) to avoid disruption of natural eating behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated the taste-enhancing effect of anodal TES (aTES) applied to the anterior part of the jaw.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate adherence to the three recommendations associated with health in the Canadian 24-h movement or Japanese physical activity (PA) guidelines and their relationship with weight status (underweight or obesity) in Japanese parents.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 425 mothers and 237 fathers.

Background: There is limited evidence from globally diverse samples on the prevalence and correlates of meeting the global guideline of 180 minutes per day of total physical activity (TPA) among 3- to 4-year-olds.

Methods: Cross-sectional study involving 797 (49.2% girls) 3- to 4-year-olds from 17 middle- and high-income countries who participated in the pilot phases 1 and 2 of the SUNRISE International Study of Movement Behaviours in the Early Years.

Proof of mechanism investigation of Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation through simultaneous measurement of autonomic functions: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

Background: The autonomic nervous system plays a vital role in regulating physiological functions. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a method that provides insights into autonomic nerve modulation. This paper presents a research protocol investigating proof of mechanism for the impact of taVNS on autonomic functions and aims to both deepen theoretical understanding and pave the way for clinically relevant applications.

Universal health coverage in the context of population ageing: catastrophic health expenditure and unmet need for healthcare.

Background: Universal health coverage means that all people can access essential health services without incurring financial hardship. Even in countries with good service coverage and financial protection, the progress towards universal health coverage may decelerate or be limited with respect to the growing older population. This study investigates the incidence/prevalence, determinants, and consequences of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and unmet need for healthcare and assesses the potential heterogeneity between younger (≤ 64 years) and older people (65 years≤).

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) and polysulfides (HS, n ≥ 2) are signaling molecules produced by 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3MST) that play various physiological roles, including the induction of hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP), a synaptic model of memory formation, by enhancing N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor activity. However, the presynaptic action of HS/HS on neurotransmitter release, regulation of LTP induction, and animal behavior are poorly understood. Here, we showed that HS/HS applied to the rat hippocampus by in vivo microdialysis induces the release of GABA, glutamate, and D-serine, a co-agonist of NMDA receptors.

Effects of riluzole on psychiatric disorders with anxiety or fear as primary symptoms: A systematic review.

Aim: Previous behavioral pharmacology studies involving rodents suggested riluzole had potential to be an ideal psychotropic drug for psychiatric disorders with anxiety or fear as primary symptoms. Several clinical studies have recently been conducted. The purpose of this study was to gather information about the efficacy and tolerability of riluzole for patients with those symptoms.

Psychosocial Factors and the Need for Multidisciplinary Support in Nutrition Counselling for Cancer Chemotherapy Patients.

This study aims to identify the background factors and experiences of patients with cancer with eating-related problems who require nutrition counselling. Using a mixed-methods approach, this secondary analysis study was conducted on patients with head and neck, oesophageal, gastric, colorectal, or lung cancers who were receiving outpatient chemotherapy. They completed a questionnaire measuring nutrition impact symptoms, eating-related distress, and quality of life (QOL).

Nutritional counseling needs of patients with mental disorders in psychiatric care: A cross-sectional survey.

Background: The exploration of diet and nutrition as they relate to mental health and psychiatric disorders is a developing field. Anxiety, depression, and pharmacological treatments used to treat these disorders are likely to have side effects that induce decreases in activity and irregular eating habits, resulting in persistent nutritional imbalance. Unhealthy dietary patterns are associated with an increased risk of developing physical and mental health conditions.

Methods: This was a preplanned secondary analysis of a survey investigating clinicians' perspectives on cancer cachexia.

Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time among Children in Japan before and during COVID-19: A Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Analysis.

This study examined changes in physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), screen time, sleep, and executive function among Japanese preschoolers between COVID-19 pre-pandemic and pandemic periods, using cross-sectional and longitudinal data. Accelerometer data from 63 children aged 5-6 years were collected from three kindergartens in Tokyo, Japan, in late 2019 (pre-COVID-19). This was compared to the data of 49 children aged 5-6 years from the same kindergartens, collected in late 2020 (during COVID-19).

Perspectives of registered dietitians and factors associated with their personal accomplishment in the management of cancer cachexia.

Purpose: Registered dietitians (RDs) have the potential in cancer cachexia management. We investigated RDs' knowledge on cancer cachexia and assessed the effects of factors on RDs' perception of playing an important role in cancer cachexia management.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of a survey examining the perspectives of health care professionals on cancer cachexia management.
