Alcohol consumption increases oxidative stress and imbalances in the antioxidant system, even with ethanol (EtOH) exposure at a young age. This study assessed changes in the antioxidant system following young EtOH exposure in peripheral immunity and measured sensitive indicators of heavy alcohol consumption. We used peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 197 male university students without smoking habits to examine changes in antioxidant-related gene expression in vitro and in PBMCs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the relationship between different types of peripheral memory T cell subsets and the severity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using flow cytometry.
  • Researchers analyzed samples from 103 NAFLD patients, focusing on various T cell populations to see how their frequencies correlated with liver fibrosis and disease activity scores.
  • Findings indicated that certain T cell subsets, particularly CD8 TEMRA cells, could effectively predict severe fibrosis and help track the progression of NAFLD in a noninvasive manner.

Introduction: Wearable device (WD) interventions are rapidly growing in chronic disease management; nevertheless, the effectiveness of these technologies to monitor telehealth outcomes has not been adequately discussed. This study aims to evaluate the effects of WDs in adherence and other health outcomes for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes mellitus (DM), and cardiac disease (CD).

Methods: CINAHL, PsycINFO, CENTRAL, and EMBASE were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs from 1937 to February 2020.

Department of Gerontological Home Care and Long-term Care Nursing, Division of Health Sciences & Nursing, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study focused on how a Virtual Reality (VR) educational program can change people’s attitudes towards dementia and strengthen community support for older adults living with the condition.
  • - Participants experienced a VR simulation that placed them in the perspective of individuals with dementia in Tokyo, and their attitudes and sense of community were measured before and after the program.
  • - Results showed significant positive changes in both attitudes towards dementia and community connection, suggesting that VR learning can effectively foster support for those affected by dementia.

Toxicity and Toxin Composition of the Greater Blue-Ringed Octopus from Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.

Toxins (Basel)

April 2019

Takehara Station, Setouchi Field Science Center, Graduate School of Biosphere Science, Hiroshima University, Takehara City, Hiroshima 725-0024, Japan.

The toxicity of the greater blue-ringed octopus whose bite is fatal to humans, was examined to better understand and prevent deaths from accidental bites. Living specimens were collected from tide pools on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, in November and December of 2015, 2016, and 2017. The specimens were examined for the anatomical distribution of the toxicity, which was expressed in terms of mouse units (MU), by the standard bioassay method for tetrodotoxin (TTX) in Japan.

Aims: Recent studies have provided the concept of invasive intramucosal colorectal carcinoma (CRC), and a case of intramucosal CRC with lymphatic invasion has been reported; however, the characteristics of such cases and the risk of lymph node metastasis have never been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to assess the pathological characteristics of intramucosal CRCs with lymphovascular invasion as well as the possibility of lymph node metastasis as an indication for additional surgery.

Methods And Results: To delineate the histological features of intramucosal CRCs with lymphovascular invasion, we analysed several histological features and compared their incidence among nine such cases, as well as 20 other cases of intramucosal CRCs without lymphovascular invasion.

Rationale: Extrauterine leiomyomas (LMs) in women are often positive for the estrogen receptor (ER); however, almost all extrauterine leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) are negative for ER. Invasive smooth muscle neoplasms (SMNs) of the gastrointestinal tract walls are very rare and those ER statuses have not been well studied.

Patient Concerns: A 48-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a 10 years history of recurrent severe abdominal pain and diarrhea lasting about an hour, with frequency of about twice per year.

Occupational commitment and job satisfaction mediate effort-reward imbalance and the intention to continue nursing.

Jpn J Nurs Sci

January 2017

Department of Nursing Education and Administration, Graduate School of Medicine, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

Aim: Occupational commitment and job satisfaction are major predictors of the intention to continue nursing. This study's purpose was to verify the mediating effects of job satisfaction and three components of occupational commitment on the relationship between effort-reward imbalance and the intention to continue nursing.

Methods: A self-report questionnaire was distributed to 3977 nurses by the nursing department of 12 hospitals in the Tohoku and Kanto districts of Japan in 2013.

Pre-existing low-frequency resistance-associated variants (RAVs) may jeopardize successful sustained virological responses (SVR) to HCV treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). However, the potential impact of low-frequency (∼0.1%) mutations, concatenated mutations (haplotypes), and their association with genotypes (Gts) on the treatment outcome has not yet been elucidated, most probably owing to the difficulty in detecting pre-existing minor haplotypes with sufficient length and accuracy.

A large amount of epidemiological evidence suggests that the impact of body weight on breast cancer risk should be heterogeneous throughout the life-stage of women. At birth, high weight has been positively associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. While, the body mass index (a relative body weight; BMI kg/m(2)) has been inversely associated with breast cancer risk among pre-menopausal women.

Unruptured intracranial aneurysms are relatively common, and can cause subarachnoid hemorrhage. Management of unruptured intracranial aneurysms requires knowledge of the natural course and management risks of individual aneurysms. Current knowledge on the natural course and management risks is summarized and our current management strategy presented.

Many pufferfish of the family Tetraodontidae possess a potent neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX). In marine pufferfish species, toxicity is generally high in the liver and ovary, whereas in brackish water and freshwater species, toxicity is higher in the skin. In 1964, the toxin of the California newt was identified as TTX as well, and since then TTX has been detected in a variety of other organisms.
