This paper tackles the challenge of accurate depth estimation from monocular laparoscopic images in dynamic surgical environments. The lack of reliable ground truth due to inconsistencies within these images makes this a complex task. Further complicating the learning process is the presence of noise elements like bleeding and smoke.

Neural networks are widely used for classification and regression tasks, but they do not always perform well, nor explicitly inform us of the rationale for their predictions. In this study we propose a novel method of comparing a pair of different feedforward neural networks, which draws on independent components obtained by independent component analysis (ICA) on the hidden layers of these networks. It can compare different feedforward neural networks even when they have different structures, as well as feedforward neural networks that learned partially different datasets, yielding insights into their functionality or performance.

Dynamic behavior of intermediate adsorbates, such as diffusion, spillover, and reverse spillover, has a strong influence on the catalytic performance in oxide-supported metal catalysts. However, it is challenging to elucidate how the intermediate adsorbates move on the catalyst surface and find active sites to give the corresponding products. In this study, the effect of the dynamic behavior of methoxy intermediate on methanol decomposition on a Pt/TiO(110) surface has been clarified by combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Preliminary analyses of asteroid Ryugu samples show kinship to aqueously altered CI (Ivuna-type) chondrites, suggesting similar origins. We report identification of C-rich, particularly primitive clasts in Ryugu samples that contain preserved presolar silicate grains and exceptional abundances of presolar SiC and isotopically anomalous organic matter. The high presolar silicate abundance (104 ppm) indicates that the clast escaped extensive alteration.

Under magnetic fields, quantum magnets often undergo exotic phase transitions with various kinds of order. The discovery of a sequence of fractional magnetization plateaus in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu(BO) has played a central role in the high-field research on quantum materials, but so far this system could only be probed up to half the saturation value of the magnetization. Here, we report the first experimental and theoretical investigation of this compound up to the saturation magnetic field of 140 T and beyond.

Research has demonstrated that adolescents of the digital age engage in developmental tasks by interacting with others in both online and offline environments. However, no studies have investigated how adolescents develop their identity, a crucial developmental task, by engaging in online and offline prosocial behaviors. To address this research gap, we examined the role of online and offline prosocial behavior in identity development during adolescence using variable- and person-centered approaches.

Speech imagery recognition from electroencephalograms (EEGs) could potentially become a strong contender among non-invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In this report, first we extract language representations as the difference of line-spectra of phones by statistically analyzing many EEG signals from the Broca area. Then we extract vowels by using iterative search from hand-labeled short-syllable data.

A simpler and more accurate measurement of absolute optical frequencies (AOFs) is very important for optical communications and navigation systems. To date, an optical reference has been needed for measuring AOFs with twelve-digit accuracy because of the difficulty in measuring them directly. Here, we focus on an electro-optics-modulation comb that can bridge the vast frequency gap between photonics and electronics.

Computational analysis of RNA sequences constitutes a crucial step in the field of RNA biology. As in other domains of the life sciences, the incorporation of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques into RNA sequence analysis has gained significant traction in recent years. Historically, thermodynamics-based methods were widely employed for the prediction of RNA secondary structures; however, machine learning-based approaches have demonstrated remarkable advancements in recent years, enabling more accurate predictions.

The phonon magnetochiral effect (MChE) is the nonreciprocal acoustic and thermal transports of phonons caused by the simultaneous breaking of the mirror and time-reversal symmetries. So far, the phonon MChE has been observed only in a ferrimagnetic insulator Cu_{2}OSeO_{3}, where the nonreciprocal response disappears above the Curie temperature of 58 K. Here, we study the nonreciprocal acoustic properties of a room-temperature ferromagnet Co_{9}Zn_{9}Mn_{2} for unveiling the phonon MChE close to room temperature.

Thin films of tantalum disulfide in the 1T-polytype structural phase (1T-TaS), a type of metallic two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are reactive to H. Interestingly, in the incommensurate charge-density wave (ICCDW) phase with a metallic state, the electrical resistance of the 1T-TaSthin film decreases when His adsorbed on it and returns to its initial value upon desorption. In contrast, the electrical resistance of the film in the nearly commensurate CDW (NCCDW) phase, which has a subtle band overlap or a small bandgap, does not change upon Hadsorption/desorption.

Purpose: Physical activity (PA) is widely recognized as a key factor in promoting skeletal muscle growth, though little is known about the specific impact of PA on the skeletal muscle development of preschool children. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between PA levels and skeletal muscle thickness in preschoolers. By exploring this relationship, we hope to gain a better understanding of how PA can be used to promote healthy skeletal muscle development in preschoolers.

The number of patients with heat illness transported by ambulance has been gradually increasing due to global warming. In intense heat waves, it is crucial to accurately estimate the number of cases with heat illness for management of medical resources. Ambient temperature is an essential factor with respect to the number of patients with heat illness, although thermophysiological response is a more relevant factor with respect to causing symptoms.

Modeling our causal intuition can contribute to understanding our behavior. In this paper, we introduce a causal induction model called proportion of assumed-to-be rare instances (pARIs) and examine its adaptive properties. We employ the two-stage theory of causal induction proposed by Hattori and Oaksford in 2007, which divides causal induction into two stages: first, observed events are sifted and likely candidates are extracted; second, each of them is verified through intervention.

This chapter introduces the RNA secondary structure prediction based on the nearest neighbor energy model, which is one of the most popular architectures of modeling RNA secondary structure without pseudoknots. We discuss the parameterization and the parameter determination by experimental and machine learning-based approaches as well as an integrated approach that compensates each other's shortcomings. Then, folding algorithms for the minimum free energy and the maximum expected accuracy using the dynamic programming technique are introduced.

Purpose: There is a growing interest in minimally invasive surgery as interventional radiology (IVR), which decreases the burden on a patient. However, occupational exposure is a problem because the treatment is performed using X-ray fluoroscopic images. This problem can be solved by the development of a teleoperation system, but rapid force presentation is important to perform safe surgery.

Self-organized molecular systems such as liposomes and supramolecules have attracted considerable attention due to their characteristic properties. An open reaction network (ORN) is another interesting candidate for such systems; however, no stabilization mechanism has been clarified. This work reveals, by computer simulation and experiments, that a network of irreversible processes such as an ORN can be stabilized by self-organization through a full balance between all the involved irreversible processes, thus forming a steady state.
