The large-conductance calcium- and voltage-activated potassium (BK) channels, encoded by the KCNMA1 gene, play important roles in neuronal function. Mutations in KCNMA1 have been found in patients with various neurodevelopmental features, including intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Previous studies of KCNMA1 knockout mice have suggested altered activity patterns and behavioral flexibility, but it remained unclear whether these changes primarily affect immediate behavioral adaptation or longer-term learning processes.

Optically Pumped and Electrically Switchable Microlaser Array Based on Elliptic Deformation and Q-Attenuation of Organic Droplet Oscillators.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Department of Materials Science, Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences, and Tsukuba Research Center for Energy Materials Science (TREMS), University of Tsukuba 1-1-1 Tennodai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, 305-8573, Japan.

Conventional laser panel displays are developed through the mass integration of electrically pumped lasers or through the incorporation of a beam steering system with an array of optically pumped lasers. Here a novel configuration of a laser panel display consisting of a non-steered pumping beam and an array of electrically Q-switchable lasers is reported. The laser oscillator consists of a robust, self-standing, and deformable minute droplet that emits laser through Whispering-Gallery Mode resonance when optically pumped.

Ethylene and sulfur dioxide molecules were co-deposited on a CsI window at cryogenic temperature, and the photoproducts upon UV irradiation were observed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The products were found to be UV wavelength-dependent; at shorter wavelengths (λ = 266 nm) one strong peak was observed while more than three peaks were identified at longer UV wavelengths (λ = 300 nm). Spectral features changed seamlessly along with UV wavelength.

Most of the modern natural language processing (NLP) techniques are based on the vector space models of language, in which each word is represented by a vector in a high dimensional space. One of the earliest successes was demonstrated by the four-term analogical reasoning task: what is to C as B is to A? The trained word vectors form "parallelograms" representing the quadruple of words in analogy. This discovery in NLP offers us insight into our understanding of human semantic representation of words via analogical reasoning.

The isotopic compositions of samples returned from Cb-type asteroid Ryugu and Ivuna-type (CI) chondrites are distinct from other carbonaceous chondrites, which has led to the suggestion that Ryugu/CI chondrites formed in a different region of the accretion disk, possibly around the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. We show that, like for Fe, Ryugu and CI chondrites also have indistinguishable Ni isotope anomalies, which differ from those of other carbonaceous chondrites. We propose that this unique Fe and Ni isotopic composition reflects different accretion efficiencies of small FeNi metal grains among the carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies.

Zero-gap-type reactors with gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) that facilitate the CO reduction reaction (CORR) are attractive due to their high current density and low applied voltage. These reactors, however, suffer from salt precipitation and anolyte flooding of the cathode, leading to a short lifetime. Here, using a zero-gap reactor with a transparent cathode end plate, we report periodic voltage oscillations under constant current operation.

We synthesized ridaifen-B boron dipyrromethene () using 2-methyl-6-nitro benzoic anhydride (MNBA)-mediated dehydration condensation reaction between amino alkyl-tethered RID and BODIPY FL. Comparative experiments between dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and MNBA for their coupling reactions demonstrated that MNBA is an effective condensation reagent for amines and BODIPY FL. A cell staining study with showed intracellular localization of BODIPY FL fluorescence, attributed to the structure, indicating the successful development of a tool for analyzing intracellular molecular behavior efficiently.

Athyrium yokoscense, a cadmium-hypertolerant fern, exhibits two cadmium stress mitigation strategies in its roots and aerial parts.

J Plant Res

November 2024

Department of Biological Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Science, Niijuku 6-3-1, Katsushika, Katsushika, Tokyo, 125-8585, Japan.

Athyrium yokoscense is hypertolerant to cadmium (Cd) and can grow normally under a high Cd concentration despite Cd being a highly toxic heavy metal. To mitigate Cd stress in general plant species, Cd is promptly chelated with a thiol compound and is isolated into vacuoles. Generated active oxygen species (ROS) in the cytoplasm are removed by reduced glutathione.

CIELAB Color Space as a Field for Tracking Color-Changing Chemical Reactions of Polymeric pH Indicators.

ACS Omega

August 2024

Department of Applied Chemistry, School of Engineering, Tokyo Denki University, 5 Senjyu Asahi-cho, Adachi, Tokyo 120-8551, Japan.

Two types of cross-linked polymeric dye films that exhibit reversible color changes in response to pH were prepared. Upon protonation, films with a nitrophenol dye moiety (NP) changed from yellow to colorless, whereas films with an azobenzene dye moiety (AB) changed from yellow to reddish-purple. The colored light transmitted through these films from a D65 white-light source was measured colorimetrically, and the transition of the chromaticity point in CIELAB upon protonation of the polymeric dyes was observed.

Fluorinated Amide-Based Electrolytes Induce a Sustained Low-Charging Voltage Plateau under Conditions Verifying the Feasibility of Achieving 500 Wh kg Class Li-O Batteries.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

September 2024

Research Center for Solar Energy Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Toyonaka, Osaka 560-8531, Japan.

Although lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) hold the promise of high gravimetric energy density, this potential is hindered by high charging voltages. To ensure that the charging voltage remains low, it is crucial to generate discharge products that can be easily decomposed during the successive charging process. In this study, we discovered that the use of amide-based electrolyte solvents containing a fluorinated moiety can notably establish a sustained voltage plateau at low-charging voltages at around 3.

School of Science and Engineering, Tokyo Denki University, Hiki, Saitama, 350-0394, Japan. Electronic address:

For a reinforcement learning agent to finish trial-and-error in a realistic time duration, it is necessary to limit the scope of exploration during the learning process. However, limiting the exploration scope means limitation in optimality: the agent could fall into a suboptimal solution. This is the nature of local, bottom-up way of learning.

Connectin (also known as titin) is a giant striated muscle protein that functions as a molecular spring by providing elasticity to the sarcomere. Novex-3 is a short splice variant of connectin whose physiological function remains unknown. We have recently demonstrated using in vitro analyses that in addition to sarcomere expression, novex-3 was also expressed in cardiomyocyte nuclei exclusively during fetal life, where it provides elasticity/compliance to cardiomyocyte nuclei and promotes cardiomyocyte proliferation in the fetus, suggesting a non-sarcomeric function.
