Background: Reconstruction of long and deep sternal defects has been challenging. The pectoralis major can be used in the conventional turnover method that requires the internal thoracic vessel. We developed a new turnover pectoralis major flap based on thoracoacromial vessels.

Patients with ADH1 exhibit similar features to patients with hypoparathyroidism, including reduced serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and Ca with low bone turnover. Although persistent suppression of bone turnover may increase bone fragility, bone strength in ADH1 patients has been unclear.

It has long been believed that tolerance against extreme environments is possible only for 'lower' groups, such as archaea, bacteria or tardigrades, and not for more 'advanced' species. Here, we demonstrated that the mammalian sperm nucleus also exhibited strong tolerance to cold and hot temperatures. When mouse spermatozoa were freeze-dried (FD), similar to the anhydrobiosis of Tardigrades, all spermatozoa were ostensibly dead after rehydration.

Aims/introduction: Double C2 domain protein b (DOC2b), one of the synaptotagmins, has been shown to translocate to the plasma membrane, and to initiate membrane-fusion processes of vesicles containing glucose transporter 4 proteins on insulin stimulation. However, the mechanism by which DOC2b is regulated remains unclear. Herein, we identified the upstream regulatory factors of DOC2b in insulin signal transduction.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a disease of unknown etiology which accounts for a large proportion of cases of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. It has a very poor prognosis with a 5-year survival rate of 30% or below, and so far there has been no guideline in Japan offering an established effective therapy based on evidence. In addition to the establishment of basic therapies, there is also an urgent need to establish therapies to deal with complications, as death occurs in many cases due to acute exacerbation or comorbid lung cancer.

A hippocampal mossy fiber synapse has a complex structure in which presynaptic boutons attach to the dendritic trunk by puncta adherentia junctions (PAJs) and wrap multiply-branched spines, forming synaptic junctions. It was previously shown that afadin regulates the formation of the PAJs cooperatively with nectin-1, nectin-3, and N-cadherin. Afadin is a nectin-binding protein with two splice variants, l-afadin and s-afadin: l-afadin has an actin filament-binding domain, whereas s-afadin lacks it.

Collective cell migration is observed during morphogenesis, angiogenesis, and wound healing, and this type of cell migration also contributes to efficient metastasis in some kinds of cancers. Because collectively migrating cells are much better organized than a random assemblage of individual cells, there seems to be a kind of order in migrating clusters. Extensive research has identified a large number of molecules involved in collective cell migration, and these factors have been analyzed using dramatic advances in imaging technology.

Multimodal imaging using novel multifunctional nanoparticles provides new approach to biomedical field. Thiol-organosilica nanoparticles containing iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and rhodamine B (thiol OS-MNP/Rho) were applied to multimodal imaging of hepatic tumor of Long-Evans Cinnamon (LEC) rat. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of LEC rats revealed tumors in the liver clearly and semi-quantitatively due to a labeling of macrophages in liver.

Multimodal imaging using novel multifunctional nanoparticles provides a new approach for the biomedical field. Thiol-organosilica nanoparticles containing iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as the core and rhodamine B in the thiol-organosilica layer (thiol OS-MNP/Rho) were synthesized in a one-pot process. The thiol OS-MNP/Rho showed enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast and high fluorescence intensity.

X-linked recessive dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP; DYT3; Lubag) is an adult-onset disorder that manifests severe and progressive dystonia with a high frequency of generalization. In search for the anatomical basis for dystonia, we performed postmortem analyses of the functional anatomy of the basal ganglia based on the striatal compartments (i.e.

We investigated the changes of anthropometrical parameters in Japanese children with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) from birth to the onset of diabetes. One-hundred ninety-nine children (79 males and 120 females) diagnosed between 0-16 yr of age during the period between 1990 and 2003 were the subjects of this study. The subjects were categorized into 3 groups according to onset age (0-5 yr; n=74, 5-10 yr; n=61, 10-16 yr; n=64).
