Cardiovasc Interv Ther

July 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Tokeidai Memorial Hospital, 2-3, North-1, East-1, Chuo-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, 060-0031, Japan.

One of the major problems associated with bare nitinol stent implantation is stent fracture, particularly in the popliteal artery. The purpose of this study was to determine whether drug coated balloons (DCB), interwoven stents (IWS), or plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA) would be suitable for use in distal femoropopliteal (FP) long lesions when an Eluvia stent was implanted proximal to a lesion. This was a multi-center retrospective study enrolling patients undergoing concomitant use of Eluvia with DCB, IWS or POBA for symptomatic atherosclerotic femoropopliteal disease (lesion length > 15 cm) [Rutherford category 2-6] between January 2018 and September 2021.

We performed robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP) without transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for a 72-year-old male patient with prostate cancer and pelvic arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Though lymphatic dissection was made contralateral to the AVM, the operation time (robotic: 2h 40 min, and total: 3h 2 min) was not long. Moreover, the blood loss amount of 250 ml was less than those in the past reports of preoperative TAE.

Article Synopsis
  • Tight junctions (TJs) are crucial components in epithelial and endothelial cells, playing vital roles in maintaining homeostasis, but their proteins often become aberrantly expressed in various cancers.
  • This review highlights transmembrane tight junction proteins like claudins, JAM-A, and occludin, which can be overexpressed early in tumor development and continue to be expressed even as cells lose their specialized functions.
  • These changes in expression and location of tight junction proteins not only promote cancer cell growth and invasion but also suggest their potential use as diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for cancer treatment.

Role of p53 in Cisplatin-Induced Myotube Atrophy.

Int J Mol Sci

May 2023

Gastroenterology, Tokeidai Memorial Hospital, 2-3 North-1, East 1, Chuo-ku, Sapporo 060-0031, Japan.

Chemotherapy-induced sarcopenia is an unfavorable prognostic factor implicated in the development of postoperative complications and reduces the quality of life of patients with cancer. Skeletal muscle loss due to cisplatin use is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction and activation of muscle-specific ubiquitin ligases Atrogin-1 and muscle RING finger 1 (MuRF1). Although animal studies suggest the involvement of p53 in age-, immobility-, and denervation-related muscle atrophy, the association between cisplatin-induced atrophy and p53 remains unknown.

Improvement in radiation techniques for locally advanced cervical cancer during the last two decades.

Int J Gynecol Cancer

August 2023

Department of Radiation Oncology, Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine, Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, Maywood, Illinois, USA.

Since the National Cancer Institute (NCI) alert of concurrent chemoradiotherapy, radiotherapy has been changed from external beam radiotherapy plus brachytherapy to platinum-based concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Therefore, concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus brachytherapy has become a standard treatment for locally advanced cervical cancer. Simultaneously, definitive radiotherapy has been changed gradually from external beam radiotherapy plus low-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy to external beam radiotherapy plus high-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy.

Cross-modal conflicts arise when information from multisensory modalities is incongruent. Most previous studies investigating audiovisual cross-modal conflicts have focused on visual targets with auditory distractors, and only a few studies have focused on auditory targets with visual distractors. Moreover, no study has investigated the differences in the impact of visual cross-modal conflict with semantic and nonsemantic competition and its neural basis.

Muscle atrophy is commonly observed during cisplatin chemotherapy, leading to a reduced QOL in cancer patients. Reduced skeletal muscle mass caused by cisplatin treatment results from the activation of ubiquitin ligases-Atrogin-1 and MuRF1, but the precise mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the possible involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and ATP production, in cisplatin-induced muscle atrophy.
