Introduction: Recent trials have shown that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists considerably reduce atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Oxidative stress, a surrogate marker of cardiovascular risk, is associated with glucose variability. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have compared the effects of injectable semaglutide and dulaglutide therapies on oxidative stress and glucose variability assessed via continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

Background: In Japan, little is known of the severity of and factors associated with psychological distress among caregivers of patients with advanced or recurrent cancer who die.

Methods: This prospective cohort study of cancer patients at the National Cancer Center Hospital East, Japan, and their caregivers followed the participants from the initial palliative care consultation (T1) to 6 months (T2) and 13 months (T3) after the patient's death. At T1, patients and caregivers were interviewed separately.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines have been widely used and have been shown to be effective in combating the pandemic. However, various side effects have been reported following vaccination. For instance, a condition called 'shoulder injury related to vaccine administration' (SIRVA) is characterized by shoulder pain and limited range of motion after intramuscular injection of a vaccine into the deltoid muscle of the shoulder.

Background: Strategies to implement early specialized palliative care have not yet been established. The present study investigated the feasibility of a nurse-led, screening-triggered early specialized palliative care intervention programme and obtained data to design a randomized controlled trial.

Methods: Patients with metastatic lung cancer undergoing first-line platinum-based chemotherapy were eligible.

Culture-independent analysis shows that spp. inhabit a wide range of low-temperature environments, but to date, no psychrotolerant or psychrophilic strains have been reported. Here, we characterized the first cultivated psychrotolerant representative, designated strain TUM19329, isolated from an Antarctic lake using a polyphasic approach and comparative genomic analysis.

Background And Aim: It is unclear whether second-generation narrow-band imaging (NBI) improves colorectal adenoma detection in clinical practice. We aimed to evaluate the ability of NBI to detect adenomas in academic and community hospitals.

Methods: This observational, multicenter study was conducted in four academic and four community hospitals between July 2018 and April 2019.

An Antarctic wintering-over station is a unique environment, as a small isolated society facing extreme survival margins. Psychological surveys have been done over ten years, including the Baum test, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE), Subjective Health Complaints Inventory (SHC), the Two-Sided Personality Scale (TSPS) and medical consultations in Syowa Station, a Japanese Antarctic station to reveal the mental status of team members. Team members experienced fewer physical health risks in Antarctica than in Japan.

Membranous ventricular septum aneurysm (MVSA) is extremely rare, especially when coexisting with aortic stenosis (AS), and reports regarding the available treatment for MVSA with AS are limited. Aortic valve replacement (AVR) can be challenging because of anatomical reasons. In this case report, a patient with MVSA and severe AS was treated with AVR with the sutureless Perceval bioprosthesis.

Introduction: It has been suggested that palliative care integrated into standard cancer treatment from the early phase of the disease can improve the quality of life of patients with cancer. In this paper, we present the protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of a nurse-led, screening-triggered, early specialised palliative care intervention programme for patients with advanced lung cancer.

Methods And Analysis: A total of 206 patients will be randomised (1:1) to the intervention group or the control group (usual care).

Waterborne pathogenic diseases are public health issues, especially for people staying in remote environments, such as Antarctica. After repeated detection of by PCR from the shower room of Syowa Station, the Japanese Antarctic research station, we wanted to understand the occurrence of waterborne pathogens, especially , in the station and their potential sources. In this study, we analyzed water and biofilm samples collected from the water facilities of Syowa Station, as well as water samples from surrounding glacier lakes, by 16S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequencing.

Evaluating Health Impact at High Altitude in Antarctica and Effectiveness of Monitoring Oxygen Saturation.

Yonago Acta Med

August 2020

Division of Health Administration and Promotion, Department of Social Medicine, School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Tottori University, Yonago 683-8504, Japan.

Background: The Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) has been conducting research activities in inland Antarctica, which is extremely cold dryland covered with a thick ice sheet. This environment may cause a health disorder called acute mountain sickness (AMS). To improve the safety of expedition members, we evaluated the impact of extreme environmental conditions on human health and the effectiveness of monitoring of hypoxia for the early detection of AMS.

Purpose: The aim of study was to explore the potential association between patient's self-reported physical symptom management goals as personalized symptom goal (PSGs) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in cancer patients. The secondary outcome was to investigate the relationship between number of physical symptoms not achieving the PSGs and HRQOL in cancer patients.

Methods: This single-center prospective observational study comprised 140 consecutive outpatients.

Article Synopsis
  • Tumor-related cancer pain often includes both nociceptive and neuropathic pain components, which can affect treatment strategies.
  • A study assessed the effectiveness of two screening tools, painDETECT and S-LANSS, for identifying the neuropathic component in patients with mixed pain due to cancer.
  • The results indicated that neither tool performed well overall, but painDETECT was somewhat effective for identifying neuropathic pain in patients experiencing mild pain, rather than moderate or severe pain.

January 2014

Santosh Shrestha, Akiko Kisino, Makoto Watanabe, Hiroshi Itsukaichi, Kazumitsu Hamasuna, Giichiro Ohno, Atsushi Tsugu, Department of Gastro-Intestinal Surgery, Tokatsu Hospital, Chiba 270-0174, Japan.

Intestinal anisakiasis is not only a rare parasitic disease, but is also difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are not specific and are often very severe and abrupt, and the findings of clinical imaging are very remarkable. Therefore, intestinal anisakiasis is often misdiagnosed as acute abdomen or intestinal obstruction and is treated surgically.
