Sympathetic regulation of periodontal ligament blood flow (PLBF) is well-attested; however, vasodilator responses mediated by parasympathetic nerve fibers have yet to be conclusively demonstrated in the periodontal ligament (PL). To obtain monoclonal antibodies reactive with odontogenic but not other types of epithelium, mice were immunized with homogenates of fixed ameloblastoma tissues, and monoclonal antibodies Y4 and M11 were produced. Y4 reacted immunohistochemically with odontogenic epithelial components but not with those of squamous differentiation, while M11 reacted with odontogenic epithelial components and a part of keratotic epithelial tissues. Immunoglobulin isotypes of both antibodies were IgM as determined by Ouchterlony immunodiffusion and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

In a previous study in cats, we found that electrical stimulation of the tooth pulp caused blood flow increases at various sites in the ipsilateral oral mucosa (upper and lower gingivae, lower lip, buccal mucosa and tongue, and, notably, bilaterally in the palatal mucosa). Tooth-pulp stimulation is well-known to induce severe pain and to evoke autonomic reflex responses in other organs and tissues. The purpose of this study was: to confirm that tooth-pulp stimulation may indeed induce autonomically mediated vasodilator responses in the feline oral mucosa away from the stimulated tooth, and to test our hypothesis that the reflex pathway involves parasympathetic vasodilator fibers as efferents.

An autopsy case of transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) is reported with immunohistochemical investigation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. Localization of chondroitin sulphates in periodontal ligaments (PDL) of rat molar roots during physiological and experimental tooth movement were analysed immunohistochemically with the use of monoclonal antibodies, 3B3 and 2B6, specific to chondroitin 6-sulphate (CH-6S) and chondroitin 4-sulphate/dermatan sulfate (CH-4S/DS), respectively. The maxillary first molars of experimental animals were forced to move laterally with a 10 g weight by U-shaped wires for 3 and 7 d. In control animals, 3B3 epitope was seen in the PDL near to the bone surface facing the distal half of roots, which corresponded to the compressive side during physiological tooth movement.

We recently reported that interleukin-12 (IL-12) stimulated hepatic NK1.1 Ag+ alpha beta T cells with intermediate T-cell receptor (TCR; NK1+ TCRint cells) and enhanced their NK1 expression (NK1high TCRint), and that these cells acquire strong major histocompatibility complex (MHC) unrestricted cytotoxicity in C57BL/6 mice, both +/+ and nu/nu. In the present study, we find that although murine lung normally has few NK1+ TCRint cells, NK1high TCRint cells are induced in+/+ and nu/nu mice after systemic administration of IL-12; these cells exhibit strong MHC unrestricted cytotoxicity against NK-sensitive and -resistant targets.

We demonstrate herein evidence that IL-12-activated alpha beta T cells with intermediate TCR (NK1+ TCRint cells) in the liver inhibit metastases in the lung as well as in the liver metastases of i-v. injected tumors. IL-12 administration enhanced NK1 expression of NK1+ TCRint cells (NK1high) and increased CD4 weakly positive (CD4low) TCRint cells, while both CD4+ TCRint cells and double-negative TCRint cells were proportionally diminished.

Virulence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in mice has been demonstrated to be dependent on the site of infection. In this experiment, pathogenesis of HSV was studied in 2 different routes of infection in a mouse model system. When BALB/c mice were infected with 5 x 10(3) plaque-forming units (PFU) of virulent HSV type 1 Miyama GC+ strain (HSV-1-GC+) intraperitoneally, all mice were dead in 6 to 9 days.

Enzymatic activities involved in glucose fermentation of Actinomyces naeslundii were studied with glucose-grown cells from batch cultures. Glucose could be phosphorylated to glucose 6-phosphate by a glucokinase that utilized polyphosphate and GTP instead of ATP as a phosphoryl donor. Glucose 6-phosphate was further metabolized to the end products lactate, formate, acetate, and succinate through the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway.

The alveolar bone that overlies the labial aspect of the root of the right lower canine tooth was pared down until paper thin. Thirty-five periodontal mechanosensitive (PM) units sensitive to stimulation of the canine and incisor and to punctate stimulation through the thinned bone of the periodontal ligament of the canine were recorded from the inferior alveolar nerve rostral to the masseter muscle. The units showed a sustained and directionally selective response to pressure applied to the teeth.
