The development of interglobular dentine in the first upper and lower molars of Wistar rats aged 3, 7, 14, 21, 42 days was examined histochemically using a lectin, succinyl wheat germ agglutinin (sWGA), which is specific for N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. sWGA stained the interglobular dentine, predentin and Golgi area of odontoblasts. Interglobular dentine was not formed in the first molars of 3-day rats, but appeared in those of 7-day rats near the enamel-free area.

To clarify the possible role of apoptosis in odontogenic epithelium, apoptosis-related factors and apoptotic cells were examined by immunohistochemistry and an in situ DNA nick end-labelling method. Expression of bcl-2 protein was detected in both normal and neoplastic odontogenic epithelium, whereas expression of p53 protein was detected only in neoplastic but not in normal odontogenic epithelium. The prevalence of cases positive for Lewis(y) antigen in ameloblastomas was significantly lower than in enamel organs.

This study examines the identification of unusual cell populations highly associated with lymphoma cells (UCP-L) in diagnostic biopsy specimens using three-color flow cytometry (3-FCM). Patterns of surface antigen expression were used to compare the morphology of distinct lymphoid cell populations present in biopsy specimens and determine the presence or absence of UCP-L. UCP-L were identified by their larger size as compared to admixed reactive lymphocytes, and the method is based on the concept that neoplastic lymphoma cells are larger than reactive lymphocytes.

Early-onset periodontitis (EOP) is characterized by rapidly progressive alveolar bone loss, chemotactic defects of neutrophils, and significant familial aggregation. We found immature myeloid lineage cells, defined as promyelocytes, in the peripheral blood in patients with EOP. A hematological examination of peripheral blood cells showed normal reference values regarding cell proportions.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes herpes genitalis, primary gingivostomatitis and recurrent herpes labialis. In order to elucidate in vivo mechanisms by which PSK, a biological response modifier, exerts a protective effect against HSV infection, we used an in vitro system to study whether PSK inactivated infectivity of HSV-type 1 (HSV-1) and HSV-type 2 (HSV-2) isolated from patients with herpes genitalis in addition to a laboratory-cultured strain of HSV type 1 (HSV-1-GC+). It was found that HSV-1-GC+ was inactivated by PSK in a dose dependent fashion of concentrations of PSK and virus titers.

Stomatitis caused by a combined chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin (CDDP) is a serious problem in the course of treatment for patients with oral carcinoma. In the present study, we proposed a form of cryotherapy using an ice-bar containing fibrinolysin and deoxyribonuclease (Elase) to inhibit the stomatitis. The therapeutic effect of the ice-bar cryotherapy was evaluated in 20 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who were undergoing 5-FU-CDDP chemotherapy.

Electrical stimulation of the central cut end of the lingual nerve (as reflex activation of parasympathetic nerve) or of the peripheral cut end of the facial (VIIth cranial) nerve (as direct activation of parasympathetic nerve) elicited the ipsilateral blood flow increases in lower lip, palate and common carotid artery (CCA) but not in frontal cerebral cortex in alpha-chloralose-urethane anesthetized, vago-sympathectomized cats. No significant difference, in terms of the vasomotor changes examined, was found between lingual nerve and facial nerve stimulation. The results suggest that there is no somato-parasympathetic reflex vasodilator mechanism serving the frontal cerebral cortex, and that changes in CCA blood flow should not be taken to be indicative of blood flow changes in cerebrocortical blood flow.

The contact area during habitual biting can vary according to the activity of the jaw musculature. Forceful masticatory muscle activity may also induce deformations of the dento-alveolar tissues and the supporting skeleton, yielding various tooth loads despite an apparently even distribution of tooth contacts. To investigate this variability, we measured bite forces simultaneously at multiple dental sites during maximum-effort clenching tasks.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether use of transmitted laser light would enable a better assessment of human pulpal vitality than back-scattered light does (LDF: laser Doppler flowmetry). The experiments were carried out on ten upper central incisors in six subjects aged 23-28 years; five of the teeth were vital with no restoration, and five were non-vital. For use with transmitted laser light, the fibers within the probe of a conventional LDF apparatus were used, one for transmitting light onto the buccal surface, the other for receiving it at the palatal surface of the same tooth.

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether changes in blood flow in the common carotid artery (CCA) reflect those in individual extracranial tissues (lower lip and palate). Changes were evoked at the three sites simultaneously using a somato-parasympathetic reflex activation method in urethane-alpha-chloralose anesthetized, vago-sympathectomized cats. Somato-parasympathetic reflex activation was induced by electrical stimulation of the central cut end of the ipsilateral lingual nerve.

Bone formation is under the control of cytokines as well as growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP). This suggests the possibility that osteogenesis might be modulated by factors which also modulate the immune system. To test whether immune disorders in the host may influence bone formation, we studied BMP-induced bone formation in a C3H/HeJ strain of mice bearing a mutant gene, the lymphoproliferation gene (lpr) or the generalized lymphoproliferative disease gene (gld), both of which are known to be a Fas deletion mutant and a Fas ligand mutant, respectively, and to induce immune disorders via a deficit in Fas-mediated apoptosis.
