Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nitrate and nitrite on the pH-lowering activity of human plaque, the nitrite-producing and -degrading activities of human plaque, and their correlation.

Methods: Nitrate and nitrite were added to human plaque suspensions collected from the buccal aspect of maxillary molars of patients visiting a general dental clinic, and changes in pH were measured with and without glucose addition. Nitrite-producing and -degrading activities were evaluated by adding nitrate and nitrite to the plaque suspension and measuring the increase and decrease in nitrite with Griess reagent, respectively.

The bone turnover capability influences the acquisition and maintenance of osseointegration. The architectures of osteocyte three-dimensional (3D) networks determine the direction and activity of bone turnover through osteocyte intercellular crosstalk, which exchanges prostaglandins through gap junctions in response to mechanical loading. : Defects of the ascending ramus of the mandible, including the condylar head and neck or the whole temporomandibular joint (TMJ), are difficult to reconstruct. Reconstruction is mainly based on the use of alloplastic joint prosthesis, costochondral grafting, distraction osteogenesis of the dorsal part of the mandibular ramus, or osseous microvascular flaps of various origin. With the objective of developing a method that overcomes the restrictions of these methods, we recently introduced a sequential chimeric flap consisting of a lateral femoral condyle flap (LFC) and deep circumflex iliac artery flap (DCIA) for reconstruction of up to half of the mandible and the condylar head and neck.

Background: Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting more than 260 million people worldwide. Nocturnal exacerbations of asthma symptoms significantly affect sleep quality and contribute to the most serious asthma exacerbations, which can lead to respiratory failure or death. Although β-adrenoceptor agonists are the standard of care for asthma, their bronchodilatory effect for nocturnal asthma is limited, and medications that specifically target symptoms of nocturnal asthma are lacking.
