Bruxism, the involuntary activity of masticatory muscles, is common among individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although bruxism is bidirectionally associated with sleep issues, whether an infant's sleep duration contributes to the development of bruxism remains unknown. In this study, a dataset (n = 83,720) obtained from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort study, was subjected to multiple imputations using logistic regression analysis with adjustments for several maternal and child-related variables.

  • Co-infections with multiple HPV genotypes in Japan are linked to increased sexual activity, with a study analyzing data from 8,128 women under 40 diagnosed with cervical abnormalities from 2012 to 2023.
  • Significant declines in multiple HPV infections were observed across different categories of cervical disease (CIN1/2, CIN3/AIS, ICC) over the past decade.
  • The study suggests that this decline may correlate with reduced sexual activity among Japanese women, as indicated by a survey of sexual behavior showing a strong link between the number of sexual partners and increased HPV infections.

Kinesin-like motor protein KIF23 maintains neural stem and progenitor cell pools in the developing cortex.

EMBO J

January 2025

Department of Developmental Neuroscience, Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University, 2-1-1 Katahira, Aoba-Ku, Sendai, Miyagi, 980-8577, Japan.

Accurate mitotic division of neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPCs) is crucial for the coordinated generation of progenitors and mature neurons, which determines cortical size and structure. While mutations in the kinesin-like motor protein KIF23 gene have been recently linked to microcephaly in humans, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we explore the pivotal role of KIF23 in embryonic cortical development.

  • Memory-phenotype (MP) CD4 T lymphocytes develop from naïve T cells and can differentiate into various T cell subsets to manage inflammation, especially in low-immune settings.
  • The study highlights that MP lymphocytes are not only made up of T helper 1 (T1) and T helper 17 (T17) cells but also contain a "undifferentiated" subpopulation that has the potential to develop into these functional subsets.
  • The undifferentiated MP lymphocytes possess the ability to proliferate rapidly and can differentiate into T1, T17, and regulatory T cells, which contributes to inflammation, although their response is regulated by existing T cells.

  • This study examines how flat rate pricing for unlimited alcohol at restaurants and bars affects drinking behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on problematic consumption patterns as measured by the AUDIT.
  • Data from a large survey of nearly 20,000 current drinkers showed that those using flat rate pricing reported significantly higher rates of problem drinking and binge drinking compared to non-users.
  • The findings suggest that flat rate pricing is linked to increased hazardous drinking and probable alcohol use disorders, indicating a potential risk factor for heavy alcohol consumption.
