Diagnosing dental caries plays a pivotal role in preventing and treating tooth decay. However, traditional methods of diagnosing caries often fall short in accuracy and efficiency. Despite the endorsement of radiography as a diagnostic tool, the identification of dental caries through radiographic images can be influenced by individual interpretation.

Article Synopsis
  • Kawasaki disease (KD) is a type of vasculitis primarily affecting coronary arteries, with an unclear cause, and may involve immune complexes triggered by unknown factors.
  • Recent studies suggest that KD shares similarities with symptoms seen in COVID-19, indicating that viral infections may play a role in its development.
  • Researchers are investigating the complex mechanisms behind KD, including the role of circulating immune complexes and various therapeutic approaches to manage the disease effectively.

  • Os vesalianum pedis (OVP) is a rare bone in the foot near the 5th metatarsal that is usually asymptomatic but can sometimes cause lateral foot pain and mimic an avulsion fracture.
  • A case involving a 62-year-old man showed that his OVP was initially misdiagnosed as an avulsion fracture after he suffered an inversion injury.
  • Treatment for OVP is generally conservative, though surgery may be required if non-surgical methods fail, highlighting the importance of correctly diagnosing it to avoid unnecessary procedures.

NF-κB has become a predominant regulator responsible for multiple physiological and pathological processes. NF-κB signaling pathway has canonical and non-canonical components which strategize the cancer-related metabolic processes. Non-canonical NF-κB pathways are known to contribute towards the chemoresistance of cancer cells.

Clinical use of mood stabilizers beyond treatment for bipolar disorder: The REAP-MS study.

Asian J Psychiatr

July 2023

Department of Psychiatry, Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taoyuan, Taiwan; Department of Psychiatry, Taipei City Hospital and Psychiatric Center, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzes the prescription patterns of mood stabilizers, primarily used for bipolar disorder, across 10 Asian countries and highlights their use in treating other psychiatric conditions.
  • It found that more than half of the patients had schizophrenia or similar disorders, and symptoms like irritability and aggression were common targets for treatment.
  • The results suggest that while mood stabilizers are frequently used off-label for various psychiatric diagnoses, the effectiveness and justification of this practice need further research.

Background: Pharmacoepidemiological studies of clozapine use to treat bipolar disorder (BD), especially in Asia, are rare, although they can provide insights into associated clinical characteristics and support international comparisons of indications and drug dosing.

Methods: We examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of clozapine treatment for BD in 13 Asian countries and regions (China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Thailand) within an Asian Prescription Patterns Research Consortium. We compared BD patients treated with clozapine or not in initial bivariate comparisons followed by multivariable logistic regression modeling.

Bone tissue engineering deals with the design of bone scaffolds. The selection of porous scaffold for osteoblast attachment and suppression of microbial infections are the major challenges that were addressed by designing gelatin scaffolds conjugated with gymnemic acid. Gelatin scaffold was prepared by loading gymnemic acid and morphological characterization, porosity, water absorption behavior, and biocompatibility of the scaffold were studied.

Endoscopic Optic Nerve Decompression for Direct Traumatic Optic Neuropathy : Our 10 Years Experience.

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

December 2022

Department of otorhinolaryngology & head and neck surgery, Pushpagiri institute of medical sciences and research centre, Tiruvalla, Kerala India.

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) can be classified into direct or indirect types. Direct optic injury usually results from optic nerve avulsion ,laceration or compression by fracture, fracture segment impingement or a resultant hematoma. Indirect optic injury is caused by increased intracanalicular pressure resulting in ischemia and disruption of neurofeedback channels.

Bio-based and patient-specific three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds can present next generation strategies for bone tissue engineering (BTE) to treat critical bone size defects. In the present study, a composite filament of poly lactic acid (PLA) and 45S5 bioglass (BG) were used to 3D print scaffolds intended for bone tissue regeneration. The thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique was used to produce composite spheres that were extruded into a continuous filament to 3D print a variety of composite scaffolds.

January 2023

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, College of Engineering, Qatar University, P.O. Box 2713, Doha, Qatar; Biomedical Research Center (BRC), Qatar University, P.O. Box 2713, Doha, Qatar. Electronic address:

The development of highly porous cell supportive polymeric scaffolds with sufficient mechanical strength has always been a challenging task in tissue engineering. The widely used nanofiber fabrication methods like electrospinning are time consuming and the obtained nanofibrous scaffolds are generally consist of compactly packed fibers, which affect proper cell penetration. On the other hand, air-jet spinning is an upcoming, less explored alternative approach for generating loosely arranged nanofibrous scaffolds within short time.

Tissue engineering is a technique that promotes healing by creating an ideal environment for endogenous cells to migrate and grow into the site of injury via a scaffold, improving regeneration and reducing the time required for in vitro cell culture. In this work, the effect of the addition of sonicated TiO in the soy protein isolate (SPI) matrix for tissue engineering applications was studied. In comparison to adding expensive nano TiO, this method of incorporating sonicated TiO into the SPI matrix will aid in achieving improved properties at a lower cost.

Psychotic symptoms are rarely concurrent with the clinical manifestations of depression. Additionally, whether psychotic major depression is a subtype of major depression or a clinical syndrome distinct from non-psychotic major depression remains controversial. Using data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns for Antidepressants, we developed a machine-learning-algorithm-based prediction model for concurrent psychotic symptoms in patients with depressive disorders.
