Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a relatively prevalent disease, primarily of a genetic etiology, affecting both sexes and characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy. However, limitations within healthcare systems, socioracial factors, and the issue of underdiagnosis hinder accurate mortality assessments in our region. This study, therefore, aimed to assess the mortality trends associated with HCM in Brazil from 2010 to 2020, with a focus on socioracial factors and healthcare disparities.

We assessed the diversity of triatomines, the rates of natural infection, and the discrete typing units (DTUs) of Trypanosoma cruzi isolated from them in two municipalities in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Active searches for triatomines were conducted in the peridomicily and wild enviroments of 10 villages within the two municipalities. Triatomines were taxonomically identified and their feces were extracted using the abdominal compression method.

Background And Aim: () is a traditional medicinal plant from Central America and its tea, obtained by infusion, has been recognized as a functional food. The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of dry tea containing biocompounds from tea on motor and emotional behavior, as well as tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expression in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rats.

Experimental Procedure: Bioactives were identified by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) and an study in male Wistar rats was run as proof of concept of neuroprotective effects of DTTS.

Reducing citrus effluent toxicity: Biological-electrochemical treatment with diamond anode.

Environ Pollut

April 2024

Graduate Program in Genomic Sciences and Biotechnology, Catholic University of Brasília, Brasília, 71966-700, Brazil. Electronic address:

One challenge of the citrus industry is the treatment and disposal of its effluents due to their high toxicity, substantial organic load, and consequent resistance to conventional biotechnological processes. This study introduces a novel approach, using electrochemical oxidation with a boron-doped diamond anode to efficiently remove organic compounds from biodegraded pulp wash (treated using the fungus Pleurotus sajor-caju.) The findings reveal that employing a current density of 20 mA cm achieves notable results, including a 44.

This work presents a framework for evaluating hybrid nanoflowers using lipase. It was expanded on previous findings by testing lipase hybrid nanoflowers (hNF-lipase) formation over a wide range of pH values (5-9) and buffer concentrations (10-100 mM). The free enzyme activity was compared with that of hNF-lipase.

One-Pot Synthesis and Surfactant Removal from MCM-41 Using Microwave Irradiation.

Molecules

January 2024

Center for Studies in Colloidal Systems (NUESC), Laboratory of Materials Synthesis and Chromatography, Institute of Technology and Research (ITP), Aracaju 49032-490, SE, Brazil.

This research pioneers the application of microwave irradiation as an innovative strategy for one-pot synthesis and surfactant elimination (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-CTAB) from MCM-41, introducing a rapid and efficient methodology. MCM-41 silica is widely utilized in various applications due to its unique textural and structural properties. Nonetheless, the presence of residual surfactants after synthesis poses a challenge to its effective application.

Age-related atrophy of skeletal muscle, is characterized by loss of mass, strength, endurance, and oxidative capacity during aging. Notably, bioenergetics and protein turnover studies have shown that mitochondria mediate this decline in function. Although exercise has been the only therapy to mitigate sarcopenia, the mechanisms that govern how exercise serves to promote healthy muscle aging are unclear.

Comparison of hybrid RNA-based models to predict the degradation and mineralization of the microcontaminant hormone 17β-estradiol.

Chemosphere

February 2024

Institute of Technology and Research (ITP), Postgraduate Program in Process Engineering (PEP), Av. Murilo Dantas, 300, 49032-490, Aracaju-Sergipe, Brazil; Tiradentes University (UNIT), Av. Murilo Dantas, 300, 49032-490, Aracaju-Sergipe, Brazil. Electronic address:

New alternatives for effluent decontamination, such as electrochemical oxidation, are being developed to provide adequate removal of endocrine disruptors such as 17β-estradiol in wastewater. In this study, data-driven models of response surface methodology, artificial neural networks, wavelet neural networks, and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system will be used to predict the degradation and mineralization of the microcontaminant hormone 17β-estradiol through an electrochemical process to contribute to the treatment of effluent containing urine. With the use of different statistical criteria and graphical analysis of the correlation between observed and predicted data, it was possible to conduct a comparative analysis of the performances of the data-driven approaches.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Zeolite A from Metakaolinite for CO Adsorption.

Int J Mol Sci

September 2023

Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Crystallography and Mineralogy, Malaga University, 29071 Málaga, Spain.

The global demand for energy and industrial growth has generated an exponential use of fossil fuels in recent years. It is well known that carbon dioxide (CO) is mainly produced, but not only from fuels, which has a negative impact on the environment, such as the increasing emission of greenhouse gases. Thus, thinking about reducing this problem, this study analyzes microwave irradiation as an alternative to conventional heating to optimize zeolite A synthesis conditions for CO capture.

N-Formyl-Methionyl-Leucyl-Phenylalanine Plays a Neuroprotective and Anticonvulsant Role in Status Epilepticus Model.

Cell Mol Neurobiol

November 2023

Institute of Biological Sciences and Health, Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), Av. Lourival de Melo Mota, Km 14, Campus A. C. Simões, Cidade Universitária, Maceió, AL, CEP 57072-970, Brazil.

Status epilepticus (SE) is described as continuous and self-sustaining seizures, which triggers hippocampal neurodegeneration, inflammation, and gliosis. N-formyl peptide receptor (FPR) has been associated with inflammatory process. N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP) peptide plays an anti-inflammatory role, mediated by the activation of G-protein-coupled FPR.
