Disrupted hippocampal functions and progressive neuronal loss represent significant challenges in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). How to achieve the improvement of pathological progression and effective neural regeneration to ameliorate the intracerebral dysfunctional environment and cognitive impairment is the goal of the current AD therapy. We examined the therapeutic potential of clinical-grade human derived dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) in cognitive function and neuropathology in AD.

Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has attracted increasing attention as a promising biomarker in liquid biopsy due to its crucial role in disease diagnosis. However, previous cfDNA detection methods are commonly based on the development of target-specific primers and integrated signal amplification strategies, which may induce false-positive results. This paper presents a sensitive yet accurate method for cfDNA detection that combines phosphorothioated-terminal hairpin creation with a self-priming extension process.

In coronary microembolization, inflammatory cell infiltration, patchy necrosis, and extensive intra-myocardial hemorrhage are dominant, which induce myocardial dysfunction with clinical symptoms of chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy. Microembolization can lead to obstruction of the coronary microvessels and result in the micro-infarction of the heart. The inflammation and elevated expression of the tumor necrosis factor in cardiomyocytes and the activation of extracellular ERK are involved in initiating the inflammatory response mechanism.

Article Synopsis
  • Bone metastasis significantly worsens the outlook for patients with advanced primary liver cancer, highlighting the need for better predictive models to guide treatment and improve patient care.
  • A study using data from the SEER database identified key prognostic factors and developed new nomograms that outperformed the traditional TNM staging system in predicting patient outcomes.
  • These findings not only enhance understanding of survival rates but also emphasize the effectiveness of various treatment strategies like surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy for improving patient survival.

This study investigates the clinical efficacy of ilaprazole combined with somatostatin on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) and the effects on oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Seventy SAP patients were randomized to the control and observation groups, which received the somatostatin treatment and ilaprazole combined with somatostatin treatment for seven days, respectively. Results found that, the time of abdominal pain relief, time of serum amylase recovery, time of urinary amylase recovery and time of defecation recovery in the observation group were shorter than those in the control group (P<0.

Patient outcomes of osteosarcoma vary because of tumor heterogeneity and treatment strategies. This study aimed to compare the performance of multiple machine learning (ML) models with the traditional Cox proportional hazards (CoxPH) model in predicting prognosis and explored the potential of ML models in clinical decision-making. From 2000 to 2018, 1243 patients with osteosarcoma were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.

Background: As a frequent disease, prostatic hyperplasia could be treated by transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). However, postoperative pain may affect the prognosis of patients to some extent, so exploring reasonable anaesthetic drugs is an important measure to reduce the recovery period of anaesthesia. This study used the combination of ropivacaine and nalbuphine for intraoperative anaesthesia in patients undergoing TURP to investigate its effect on pain during anaesthesia recovery.

Background: While patients affected by mild cognitive impairment (MCI) exhibit characteristic voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) alterations, the ability of such VMHC abnormalities to predict the diagnosis of MCI in these patients remains uncertain. As such, this study was performed to evaluate the potential role of VMHC abnormalities in the diagnosis of MCI.

Methods: MCI patients and healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled and subjected to resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and neuropsychological testing.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a significant issue in public health, displaying a high occurrence rate and mortality rate. Ferroptosis, a form of programmed cell death (PCD), is characterized by iron accumulation and intensified lipid peroxidation. Recent studies have demonstrated the pivotal significance of ferroptosis in AKI caused by diverse stimuli, including ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), sepsis and toxins.

Tooth extraction is a common and widely employed therapeutic procedure in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Minimally invasive tooth extraction can reduce both physical and psychological trauma to the patients, and is widely recommended as a first-line clinical treatment. But currently no guidelines or consensus has been available to provide a systematic introduction of minimally invasive tooth extraction to guide the clinical practices.

Boundary-Repairing Dual-Path Network for Retinal Layer Segmentation in OCT Image with Pigment Epithelial Detachment.

J Imaging Inform Med

December 2024

Department of Health Administration and Policy, College of Health and Human Services, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, 22030, USA.

Automatic retinal layer segmentation in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is crucial for the diagnosis of ocular diseases. Currently, automatic retinal layer segmentation works well with normal OCT images. However, pigment epithelial detachment (PED) dramatically alters the retinal structure, causing blurred boundaries and partial disappearance of the Bruch's Membrane (BM), thus posing challenges to the segmentation.
