Aims: The nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) is a major source of cholinergic innervation in the central nervous system. We aimed to investigate the characteristics of structural and functional alterations in the NBM and its projections in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the effects of computerized cognitive training (CCT).

Methods: Forty-five patients with MCI and 45 cognitively unimpaired controls (CUCs) were recruited.

Background: This study aimed to describe the temporal trends in the age and sex burdens of lower respiratory infections (LRIs) in China and globally from 1990 to 2021 and to analyze their epidemiological characteristics to formulate corresponding strategies to control LRIs.

Methods: This study utilized open data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database from 1990 to 2021 to assess the burden of disease based on the prevalence, incidence, mortality, years lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of LRIs in China and globally. Moreover, a comprehensive comparative analysis of the epidemiological characteristics of LRIs in China and globally was conducted via the Joinpoint regression model, age-period-cohort model (APC model), and stratified analysis of the study method from multiple dimensions, such as age, sex, and period.

Antibiotic therapy is the primary treatment for infective endocarditis (IE), yet up to 50% of patients still require surgical intervention. However, surgical intervention carries significant risks of mortality and complications for IE patients, and there remains a lack of consensus on which preoperative characteristics of infective endocarditis have a substantial impact on patient prognosis. Particularly, some IE patients develop periannular abscesses, leading to more severe complications.

Magnesium Deficiency: The Insidious Executor of the Liver Disease.

J Am Nutr Assoc

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, China.

Magnesium (Mg), which is predominantly present in cells as a micronutrient, is involved in numerous vital physiological processes, such as DNA repair and energy metabolism. Mg deficiency has been reported to contribute toward the advent and progression of a variety of liver diseases; in particular, these two pathological entities may synergistically act. Given the significant impact and increasing burden of liver diseases on global healthcare resources and economic expenditure, it is tempting to manage Mg insufficiency as novel promising therapeutic strategies.

Background: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) affects up to 10 % of the population and is a common cause of hypothyroidism, which can lead to depression and anxiety. However, it remains unclear whether HT directly causes these conditions or if they arise due to HT-induced hypothyroidism. The present review aims to offer meta-analytic insights into the relationship between depression and anxiety in patients with euthyroid HT.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how lymphovascular invasion (LVI) affects overall survival in gastric cancer patients at pN0 stage after they've undergone surgery to remove the tumor.
  • - Out of 497 patients reviewed, 19.9% had LVI, which was linked to significantly poorer survival rates; further analysis identified LVI and the number of examined lymph nodes as independent predictors of survival.
  • - The findings suggest that for better outcomes, it is crucial to dissect more than 15 lymph nodes during surgery for patients with pN0 stage gastric cancer, especially those with LVI.

Optimizing carbon source addition to control surplus sludge yield via machine learning-based interpretable ensemble model.

Environ Res

December 2024

College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Nankai University, Tianjin, 300350, China; MOE Key Laboratory of Pollution Processes and Environmental Criteria, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Environmental Remediation and Pollution Control, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Environmental Technology for Complex Trans-Media Pollution, Nankai University, Tianjin, 300350, China. Electronic address:

Appropriate carbon source addition can save operational costs and reduce surplus sludge yield in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). However, the link between carbon source and surplus sludge yield remains neglected although machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for WWTP, and is a challenge due to more complex multidimensional pattern recognition. Herein, weighted average ensemble strategy was conducted to assemble multiple diverse basic models to obtain better prediction capability to optimize carbon source addition (Model-1) and further control surplus sludge yield (Model-2).

Polo-like kinase 4 accelerates glioma malignant progression and vasculogenic mimicry by phosphorylating EphA2.

Cancer Lett

December 2024

Tianjin Neurological Institute, Key Laboratory of Post-Neuro Injury, Neuro-repair and Regeneration in Central Nervous System, Ministry of Education and Tianjin City, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, 300052, China. Electronic address:

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM), which involved the formation of vascular-like structures by highly invasive tumor cells, had been identified as one of the mechanisms contributing to resistance against anti-angiogenic therapy in patients with glioblastoma (GBM). Therefore, inhibition of VM formation may serve as an effective therapeutic strategy against angiogenesis resistance. Polo-like kinase 4 (PLK4), a protein kinase, had been linked to the progression of glioblastoma and was associated with an unfavorable prognosis.
