Background: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) affects up to 10 % of the population and is a common cause of hypothyroidism, which can lead to depression and anxiety. However, it remains unclear whether HT directly causes these conditions or if they arise due to HT-induced hypothyroidism. The present review aims to offer meta-analytic insights into the relationship between depression and anxiety in patients with euthyroid HT.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and unspecific inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, and current treatment options often fail to maintain long-term remission. Studies have shown that propionate level is reduced in fecal samples from patients with IBD. Propionate can ameliorate IBD through intestinal epithelial cells and immune regulation, but its effects on the inflammatory microenvironment and macrophage differentiation have not been widely studied.

Article Synopsis
  • - Psoriasis is linked to the rapid growth of skin cells, and the study focuses on how the protein IL-27 contributes to this process by activating certain genes in epidermal keratinocytes.
  • - Researchers used bioinformatics to analyze mRNA profiles and discovered significant gene clusters related to cell proliferation and energy metabolism, identifying 6 key hub genes involved in these pathways.
  • - The findings suggest that IL-27 boosts processes like glycolysis and mitochondrial activity, highlighting its potential role in the progression of psoriasis.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies suggest that normobaric hyperoxia (NBO) may help protect the blood-brain barrier (BBB) during acute stroke treatment, but its effects on human patients need more investigation.
  • In a study involving 86 patients, those treated with NBO alongside endovascular therapy (EVT) showed significantly lower levels of BBB damage and brain injury markers compared to those receiving EVT alone.
  • The findings indicate that NBO therapy could be beneficial in preserving BBB integrity and reducing complications in acute stroke patients, as evidenced by lower rates of intracranial contrast extravasation.

Surgery which involves anterior mediastinal mass resection with artificial replacement of the superior vena cava results in significant disruption to the circulatory system. In this case, a pathway was established to divert blood from the internal jugular to the femoral vein after clamping of the superior vena cava. Blood which would ordinarily return to the right atrium via the superior vena cava was now being returned via the inferior vena cava.

Background: Despite numerous studies investigating the association between androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and serum uric acid (SUA), the causal relationship between AGA and SUA remains unknown.

Methods: We utilized bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the causality between AGA and SUA. Our study chose single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with genome-wide significance (p < 5×10) for the exposure and showing low linkage disequilibrium (R < 0.

Thyroid dysfunction plays an important role in the pathology of diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction (DACD). However, thyroid hormone (TH) signaling and action changes in DACD brains remain unknown. This study evaluated the alternations in TH signaling and action in the brains of DACD mice and explored the beneficial effects of levothyroxine (L-T4) treatment.

Background: Normalized decision support system for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) will improve reproducibility compared with subjective clinical diagnosis and treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an essential role in the evaluation of LDH. This study aimed to develop an MRI-based decision support system for LDH, which evaluates lumbar discs in a reproducible, consistent, and reliable manner.

The association of dietary inflammatory index (DII) with constipation has not been well studied in general population. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether DII is associated with constipation in a large representative sample of the US population. Data were obtained from the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Epidemiological age-based differences in traumatic spinal cord injury patients: A multicenter study based on 13,334 inpatients.

J Spinal Cord Med

March 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, Qilu Hospital, Shandong University Centre for Orthopaedics, Advanced Medical Research Institute, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines age-based differences in traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) inpatients in China, noting that older patients had longer delays for surgery, a higher likelihood of incomplete injuries, and longer hospital stays compared to younger patients.
  • Researchers analyzed medical records from 13,334 TSCI patients across 30 hospitals from 2013 to 2018, finding a significant increase in the number and proportion of elderly patients (≥85 years) during this period.
  • Key findings revealed that younger patients were more likely to undergo crucial decompression surgery, while elderly patients had lower hospitalization costs, highlighting important disparities in treatment and care between age groups.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) represents a prevalent subtype of non-small cell lung cancer with a complex molecular landscape. Dysregulated cellular energetics, notably the interplay between hypoxia and glycolysis, has emerged as a hallmark feature of LUAD tumorigenesis and progression. In this study, we aimed to identify hypoxia and glycolysis related gene signatures and construct a prognostic model to enhance the clinical management of LUAD.

Nanomaterial-mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising strategy for permanent male sterilization owing to its easy operation, rapid heating, minimal invasiveness, and high spatiotemporal controllability. However, the currently available PTT for male sterilization utilizes irradiation sources in the first near-infrared window (NIR-I), which may suffer from incomplete sterilization due to the insufficient penetration depth of NIR-I light. Herein, we developed a facile one-pot hydrothermal synthetic method of cysteine-coated copper sulfide (Cys-CuS) nanosheets for the second NIR window (NIR-II) PTT-mediated permanent male sterilization.

MedComm (2020)

August 2023

Department of Colorectal Surgery and Oncology (Key Laboratory of Cancer Prevention and Intervention, China National Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Medical Sciences, Zhejiang Province, China) The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine Hangzhou Zhejiang China.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major malignancy threatening the health of people in China and screening could be effective for preventing the occurrence and reducing the mortality of CRC. We conducted a multicenter, prospective clinical study which recruited 4,245 high-risk CRC individuals defined as having positive risk-adapted scores or fecal immunochemical test (FIT) results, to evaluate the clinical performance of the multitarget fecal immunochemical and stool DNA (FIT-sDNA) test for CRC screening. Each participant was asked to provide a stool sample prior to bowel preparation, and FIT-sDNA test and FIT were performed independently of colonoscopy.

The role of PKN1 in glioma pathogenesis and the antiglioma effect of raloxifene targeting PKN1.

J Cell Mol Med

September 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital. Tianjin Neurological Institute, Laboratory of Neuro-Oncology, Key Laboratory of Post-Trauma Neuro-Repair and Regeneration in Central Nervous System, Ministry of Education. Tianjin Key Laboratory of Injuries, Variations and Regeneration of Nervous System, Tianjin, P. R. China.

PKN1 (protein kinase N1), a serine/threonine protein kinase family member, is associated with various cancers. However, the role of PKN1 in gliomas has rarely been studied. We suggest that PKN1 expression in glioma specimens is considerably upregulated and positively correlates with the histopathological grading of gliomas.
