August 2019

Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin Medical University Eye Institute &School of Optometry and Ophthalmology, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, 300384, China. Electronic address:

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between the duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and the ocular surface, and to address the question of why some people with lengthy DM duration are asymptomatic, whereas some people with shorter DM duration have pain or discomfort in their eyes.

Methods: Eighty-seven eyes of 87 subjects with different durations of DM and 49 eyes of 49 subjects without DM underwent Schirmer I test, tear film break-up time, sodium fluorescein staining and tear meniscus height (TMH) measurement, and completed the Standardized Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire. Corneal structure and function were assessed with in vivo confocal corneal microscopy and with a corneal sensitivity esthesiometer.

Mechanisms of neurodegeneration in a preclinical autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa knock-in model with a Rho mutation.

Cell Mol Life Sci

September 2019

Jonas Children's Vision Care and Bernard & Shirlee Brown Glaucoma Laboratory, Departments of Ophthalmology, Pathology, and Cell Biology, Columbia University, New York, NY, 10032, USA.

D190N, a missense mutation in rhodopsin, causes photoreceptor degeneration in patients with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP). Two competing hypotheses have been developed to explain why D190N rod photoreceptors degenerate: (a) defective rhodopsin trafficking prevents proteins from correctly exiting the endoplasmic reticulum, leading to their accumulation, with deleterious effects or (b) elevated mutant rhodopsin expression and unabated signaling causes excitotoxicity. A knock-in D190N mouse model was engineered to delineate the mechanism of pathogenesis.

YY1 Complex Promotes Quaking Expression via Super-Enhancer Binding during EMT of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Cancer Res

April 2019

State Key Laboratory of Medicinal Chemical Biology and College of Pharmacy, Nankai University, Tianjin, China.

Quaking (QKI) is an alternative splicing factor that can regulate circRNA formation in the progression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, but the mechanism remains unclear. High expression of QKI is correlated with short survival time, metastasis, and high clinical stage and pathology grade in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Here we report that transcription of the QKI gene was activated by the Yin-Yang 1 (YY1)/p65/p300 complex, in which YY1 bound to the super-enhancer and promoter of , p65 combined with the promoter, and p300 served as a mediator to maintain the stability of the complex.

Programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) and its ligand, PD-L1, as negative co-stimulatory molecules, are indispensable for regulating both physiological and pathological immune responses. The PD-1/PD-L1-mediated signaling pathway has been studied extensively in cancer research and has become a hotspot for biopharmaceuticals and immunotherapy. Furthermore, monoclonal antibodies to PD-1 have just been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat certain types of malignancies.

The efficacy and safety of aflibercept and conbercept in diabetic macular edema.

Drug Des Devel Ther

March 2019

Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin Medical University Eye Institute, College of Optometry and Ophthalmology, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin 300384, People's Republic of China,

Diabetic macular edema (DME) has shown an increasing prevalence during the past years and is the leading cause of diabetic retinopathy blindness. Traditional treatment modalities include laser and corticosteroid therapy, which, however, either act through unclear mechanisms or cause cataracts and elevated intraocular pressure. In recent years, as the pathogenic role of VEGF in DME has been well-recognized, the intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF drugs has become the first-line treatment of DME due to their great efficacy in improving visual acuity and mitigating macular edema.

Research progress on the role of connective tissue growth factor in fibrosis of diabetic retinopathy.

Int J Ophthalmol

September 2018

Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin Medical University Eye Institute, Ophthalmology College of Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin 300384, China.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most important types of diabetic microangiopathy, which is a specific change of fundus lesions and is one of the most serious complications of diabetes. When DR develops to proliferative DR, the main factors of decreasing vision, and even blindness, include retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage caused by contraction of blood vessels by fiber membrane. Recent studies reported that the formation of fiber vascular membrane is closely related to retinal fibrosis.
