Eye Institute and School of Optometry, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Retinal Functions and Diseases, Tianjin Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Disease, Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how corneal curvature changes relate to epithelial remodeling in myopic patients after undergoing two types of eye surgery, Trans-PRK and FS-LASIK, over a six-month period.
  • Using optical coherence tomography, researchers measured corneal epithelial thickness and curvature in various regions of the cornea before and after surgery.
  • Results showed both procedures led to initial curvature flattening, followed by gradual steepening, with the Trans-PRK group significantly thickening in the central and peripheral areas, while FS-LASIK thickened mainly in the central region; a strong correlation was found between curvature changes and epithelial thickness changes in both groups.

Purpose: Corneal injury (CI) resulting in corneal opacity remains a clinical challenge. Exosomes (Exos) derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have been proven effective in repairing various tissue injuries and are also considered excellent drug carriers due to their biological properties. Recently, microRNA-29b (miR-29b) was found to play an important role in the autophagy regulation which correlates with cell inflammation and fibrosis.

Keratoconus is corneal disease in which the progression of conical dilation of cornea leads to reduced visual acuity and even corneal perforation. However, the etiology mechanism of keratoconus is still unclear. This study aims to identify the signature genes related to cell death in keratoconus and examine the function of these genes.

A method for extracting corneal reflection images from multiple eye images.

Comput Biol Med

July 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200032, China. Electronic address:

The incident light reflected from the cornea is rich in information about the human surroundings, and these reflected rays are imaged by the camera, which can be used for research on human consciousness and gaze analysis, and produce certain help in the fields of psychology, human computer interaction and disease diagnosis. However, limited by the low corneal reflection ability, when a high-definition camera captures corneal reflecting rays, a large amount of color and texture interference from the iris can seriously contaminate the corneal reflection images, resulting in low usability and ubiquity of corneal reflection images. In this paper, we propose a corneal reflection image extraction method with multiple eye images as input.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aims to enhance therapies for injuries and diseases by activating resident stem cells, specifically focusing on Sox9 stem cells that play a crucial role in acute kidney injury (AKI).
  • - Using a mouse model and single-cell RNA sequencing, researchers explored how prostaglandin E2 (PGE) treatment influences Sox9 cell fate during kidney tissue repair, finding that PGE helps Sox9 cells differentiate into essential renal cells while preventing fibrosis.
  • - The findings suggest that activating Sox9 stem cells with PGE can improve kidney regeneration, offering potential new strategies for treating AKI by restoring lipid metabolism and enhancing communication between different cell types in the kidney.
