Keratoconus is a blinding eye disease that affects activities of daily living; therefore, early diagnosis is crucial. Great efforts have been made toward an early diagnosis of keratoconus. Recent studies have shown that corneal biomechanics is associated with the occurrence and progression of keratoconus.

Background: Viral nucleic acid testing of intraocular fluid using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a major laboratory examination in the diagnosis of acute retinal necrosis (ARN). Importantly, false negative PCR results may occur in several special situations. We reported a case of ARN with a negative PCR result in the aqueous humour in the very early stages of disease.

Enhancing the development of and thermogenesis in brown and beige fat represents a potential treatment for obesity. In this study, we show that Foxj3 expression in fat is stimulated by cold exposure and a β-adrenergic agonist. Adipose-specific Foxj3 knockout impaired the thermogenic function of brown fat, leading to morphological whitening of brown fat and obesity.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between relative corneal refractive power shift (RCRPS) and axial length growth (ALG) in bilateral myopic anisometropes treated with orthokeratology.
Methods: A total of 102 children with myopic anisometropia in this prospective interventional study were randomly assigned to the spectacle group and orthokeratology group. Axial length (AL) and corneal topography was measured at baseline and the 12-month follow-up visit.

Precise delivery of radionuclides and anticancer drugs to tumor tissue is crucial to ensuring drug synergism and optimal therapeutic effects in radionuclide-based combination radio-chemotherapy. However, current codelivery vectors often rely on physical embedment/adsorption to load anticancer drugs, which lacks precise mechanisms for drug loading and release, resulting in unpredictable combination effects. Herein, a macrocyclic-albumin conjugate (MAC) that enables precise loading and controlled release of anticancer drugs is presented.

C-di-GMP is a bacterial second messenger implicated in the regulation of many key functions including antibiotic tolerance and biofilm formation. Our understanding of how c-di-GMP exerts its action via receptors to modulate different biological functions is still limited. Here we used a c-di-GMP affinity pull-down assay coupled to LC-MS/MS to identify c-di-GMP-binding proteins in the opportunistic pathogen Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

Background: Retinal disorders cause substantial visual burden globally. Accurate estimates of the vision loss due to retinal diseases are pivotal to inform optimal eye health care planning and allocation of medical resources. The purpose of this study is to describe the proportion of visual impairment and blindness caused by major retinal diseases in China.

Pathogenic Th17 cells are critical drivers of multiple autoimmune diseases, including uveitis and its animal model, experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU). However, how innate immune signals modulate pathogenic Th17 responses remains largely unknown. Here, we showed that miR-338-3p endowed dendritic cells (DCs) with an increased ability to activate interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP) -specific Th17 cells by promoting the production of IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-23.

Background: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the main cause of vision loss in diabetic patients. Currently, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) intravitreal injection stands as the first-line therapy for DME. However, some patients exhibit insufficient response to anti-VEGF agents and often require multiple injections, imposing psychological and economic burdens.

Failure to recognize samples from the classes unseen during training is a major limitation of artificial intelligence in the real-world implementation for recognition and classification of retinal anomalies. We establish an uncertainty-inspired open set (UIOS) model, which is trained with fundus images of 9 retinal conditions. Besides assessing the probability of each category, UIOS also calculates an uncertainty score to express its confidence.

Background: Corneal neovascularization (CoNV) is a common sign in anterior segment eye diseases, the level of which can indicate condition changes. Current CoNV evaluation methods are time-consuming and some of them rely on equipment which is not widely available in hospitals. Thus, a fast and efficient evaluation method is now urgently required.

Objective: To provide a reference for future policy and measure formulation by conducting a detailed analysis of the burden of vision loss due to cataract by year, age, and gender in China from 1990 to 2019.
Methods: Data on the prevalence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to cataract in China and neighboring and other G20 countries were extracted from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study to observe the changing trends of vision loss.
Results: The number and rate of all-age prevalence and DALYs for cataract in China increased significantly from 1990 to 2019.

Introduction: The aim of this work is to determine the interocular differences in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (p-RNFL) thickness and its associations among school children in Hong Kong.
Methods: We conducted a population-based study including 4034 children aged 6-8 years from the Hong Kong Children Eye Study (HKCES). All participants received comprehensive ocular examinations where p-RNFL thickness was measured using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).

Background: As the two most prevalent refractive surgeries in China, there is a substantial number of patients who have undergone Femtosecond Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) procedures. However, there is still limited knowledge regarding the selection of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulas for these patients with a history of FS-LASIK or SMILE.
Methods: A total of 100 eyes from 50 postoperative refractive surgery patients were included in this prospective cohort study, with 25 individuals (50 eyes) having undergone FS-LASIK and 25 individuals (50 eyes) having undergone SMILE.

Background: The correlation between the change in foveal thickness measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT) following surgery for infectious endophthalmitis and preoperative and postoperative visual acuity is uncertain, and there are few pertinent studies on this topic.
Objective: We explored the variations in macular thickness using OCT after emergency vitrectomy for post-cataract infectious endophthalmitis and the relationship between macular thickness with changes in visual function.
Methods: We included 10 cases of post-cataract infectious endophthalmitis.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) affect several physiological processes, including visual acuity, but their relationship with diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains elusive. The aim of this study was to determine whether PUFAs have a causal effect on DR. PUFAs- (total and omega-3 [FAw3] and omega-6 [FAw6] fatty acids and their ratio) and DR-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms derived from genome-wide association studies; sample sizes were 114,999 for fatty acids and 216,666 for any DR (ADR), background DR (BDR), severe non-proliferative DR (SNPDR), and proliferative DR (PDR).
