Diabetes mellitus has been associated with increased dry eye disease (DED) and exacerbates DED's pathology. This preliminary short-term study aimed to evaluate the effects of 3% Diquafosol Sodium ophthalmic solution (DQS) on ocular surface inflammation and corneal nerve density in diabetic dry eye (DDE) patients. In this perspective, participants used 1 drop of 3% DQS (Diquas; Santen Pharmaceutical Co.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the role of the microRNA miR-29a-3p in the development of senile cataracts, suggesting that it's involved in both the formation and progression of the condition.
  • - Researchers used a selenite cataract model in rats and applied various experimental techniques to discover that miR-29a-3p is downregulated in cataracted lenses and that its decreased levels lead to increased lens cell growth and reduced cell death.
  • - The findings indicate that miR-29a-3p interacts with the gene CAND1, proposing that targeting miR-29a-3p could be a promising strategy for treating or preventing senile cataracts.

Background: The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to rise and 70% of diabetic individuals have dry eye disease (DED) that leads to subsequent abnormalities of the corneal epithelium, corneal nerves, tear film, or corneal endothelium. In addition, persons with diabetes produce fewer tear secretions than healthy individuals. While several anti-inflammatory drug-based therapies for dry eye in diabetic individuals are currently being administered, their efficacy has not been studied in detail.

Integrated DNA Methylation and Transcriptomics Analyses of Lacrimal Glands Identify the Potential Genes Implicated in the Development of Sjögren's Syndrome-Related Dry Eye.

J Inflamm Res

November 2023

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Retinal Functions and Diseases, Tianjin Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Disease, Eye Institute and School of Optometry, Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: Sjögren's syndrome-related dry eye (SS-related dry eye) is an intractable autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of lacrimal glands (LGs), where epigenetic factors are proven to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this disease. However, the alteration of DNA methylation in LGs and its role in the pathogenesis of SS-related dry eye is still unknown. Here, we performed an integrated analysis of DNA methylation and RNA-Seq data in LGs to identify novel DNA methylation-regulated differentially expressed genes (MeDEGs) in the pathogenesis of SS-related dry eye.

The topically administered glaucoma medications usually encounter serious precorneal drug loss and low corneal penetration, leading to a low bioavailability. In addition, due to the complexity of glaucoma etiology, a single medication is often insufficient. In this work, we report a novel dendritic oligoethylenimine decorated liposome for codelivery of two antiglaucoma drugs, latanoprost and timolol.

Dry eye disease (DED), primarily classified as multifactorial ocular surface disorder, afflicts tens of millions of individuals worldwide, adversely impacting their quality of life. Extensive research has been conducted on tear film analysis over the past decades, offering a range of tests to evaluate its volume, health, and integrity. Yet, early diagnosis and effective treatment for DED continue to pose significant challenges in clinical settings.
