Diabetes mellitus has been associated with increased dry eye disease (DED) and exacerbates DED's pathology. This preliminary short-term study aimed to evaluate the effects of 3% Diquafosol Sodium ophthalmic solution (DQS) on ocular surface inflammation and corneal nerve density in diabetic dry eye (DDE) patients. In this perspective, participants used 1 drop of 3% DQS (Diquas; Santen Pharmaceutical Co.

Background: The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to rise and 70% of diabetic individuals have dry eye disease (DED) that leads to subsequent abnormalities of the corneal epithelium, corneal nerves, tear film, or corneal endothelium. In addition, persons with diabetes produce fewer tear secretions than healthy individuals. While several anti-inflammatory drug-based therapies for dry eye in diabetic individuals are currently being administered, their efficacy has not been studied in detail.

Purpose: To compare the effectiveness and safety of a 27-gauge (27G) beveled-tip microincision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS) with a 25-gauge (25G) flat-tip MIVS for the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
Methods: A prospective, single-masked, randomized, controlled clinical trial included 52 eyes (52 patients) with PDR requiring proliferative membrane removal. They were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to undergo the 27G beveled-tip and or 25G flat-tip MIVS (the 27G group and the 25G group, respectively).

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a continuous functional contrast visual acuity (CFCVA) system in the assessment of visual function in dry eye disease (DED).
Methods: Twenty patients with DED and 15 normal controls were recruited. Subjective symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, and tear film stability was assessed by a noninvasive corneal topographer.

Purpose: To assess the quantitative differences in vessel density and retinal thickness of X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) patients and RS1 mutation carriers, and the correlation with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) with swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA).
Methods: We analyzed the correlation between the BCVA of XLRS patients and the SS-OCT and OCTA findings including the detailed structural characteristics of XLRS patients.
Results: Besides the schitic changes in various retinal layers, the structural disturbance of outer retina was universally found.

Purpose: Sjögren's syndrome-related dry eye (SS-related dry eye) is an intractable autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of lacrimal glands (LGs), where epigenetic factors are proven to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this disease. However, the alteration of DNA methylation in LGs and its role in the pathogenesis of SS-related dry eye is still unknown. Here, we performed an integrated analysis of DNA methylation and RNA-Seq data in LGs to identify novel DNA methylation-regulated differentially expressed genes (MeDEGs) in the pathogenesis of SS-related dry eye.

The topically administered glaucoma medications usually encounter serious precorneal drug loss and low corneal penetration, leading to a low bioavailability. In addition, due to the complexity of glaucoma etiology, a single medication is often insufficient. In this work, we report a novel dendritic oligoethylenimine decorated liposome for codelivery of two antiglaucoma drugs, latanoprost and timolol.

Dry eye disease (DED), primarily classified as multifactorial ocular surface disorder, afflicts tens of millions of individuals worldwide, adversely impacting their quality of life. Extensive research has been conducted on tear film analysis over the past decades, offering a range of tests to evaluate its volume, health, and integrity. Yet, early diagnosis and effective treatment for DED continue to pose significant challenges in clinical settings.

Aim: To determine the protective effect of recombinant prominin-1 (Prominin-1)+microRNA-29b (P1M29) on N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced excitotoxicity in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs).
Methods: RGC-5 cells were cultured, and NMDA-induced excitotoxicity at the range of 100-800 µmol/L was assessed using the MTT assay. NMDA (800 µmol/L) was selected as the appropriate concentration for preparing the cell model.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the most common cause of blindness in patients with diabetic retinopathy. To investigate the proteomic profiles of the aqueous humor (AH) of individuals with diabetic macular edema (DME), AH samples were collected from patients with non-diabetes mellitus (NDM), DM, nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), and DME. We performed comparative proteomic analyses using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and bioinformatics analyses.

Endothelial cells (EC) play essential roles in retinal vascular homeostasis. This study aimed to characterize retinal EC heterogeneity and functional diversity using single-cell RNA sequencing. Systematic analysis of cellular compositions and cell-cell interaction networks identified a unique EC cluster with high inflammatory gene expression in diabetic retina; sphingolipid metabolism is a prominent aspect correlated with changes in retinal function.
