In plants, pollen-pistil interactions during pollination and fertilization mediate pollen hydration and germination, pollen tube growth, and seed set and development. Cell wall invertases (CWINs) help provide the carbohydrates for pollen development; however, their roles in pollination and fertilization have not been well established. In cucumber (Cucumis sativus), CsCWIN3 showed the highest expression in flowers, and we further examined CsCWIN3 for functions during pollination to seed set.

A mutation of CsARC6 not only causes white fruit color in cucumber, but also affects plant growth and fruit quality. Fruit color of cucumber is a very important agronomic trait, but most of the genes affecting cucumber white fruit color are still unknow, and no further studies were reported on the effect of cucumber fruit quality caused by white fruit color genes. Here, we obtained a white fruit mutant em41 in cucumber by EMS mutagenesis.

The accumulation of carotenoids in plants is a key nutritional quality in many horticultural crops. Although the structural genes encoding the biosynthetic enzymes are well-characterized, little is known regarding photoperiod-mediated carotenoid accumulation in the fruits of some horticultural crops. Herein, we performed physiological and transcriptomic analyses using two cucumber genotypes, SWCC8 (XIS-orange-fleshed and photoperiod-sensitive) and CC3 (white-fleshed and photoperiod-non-sensitive), established under two photoperiod conditions (8L/16D vs.

Background: Photosynthesis in the green leafless blade tissues or organs of plants has been studied in some plants, but the photosynthetic characteristics of stems and petioles are poorly understood. Cucurbitaceous plants are climbing plants that have substantial stem and petiole biomass. Understanding the photosynthetic contribution of cucumber stems and petioles to their growth and the underlying molecular mechanisms are important for the regulating of growth in cucumber production.

Background: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is cultivated worldwide, and it is essential to produce enough high-quality seeds to meet demand. Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) in cucumber is a critical problem and causes serious damage to seed production and quality.

Allopolyploids undergo "genomic shock" leading to significant genetic and epigenetic modifications. Previous studies have mainly focused on nuclear changes, while little is known about the inheritance and changes of organelle genome in allopolyploidization. The synthetic allotetraploid , which is generated via hybridization between and , is a useful model system for studying cytonuclear variation.

Cucumber () pollen development involves a diverse range of gene interactions between sporophytic and gametophytic tissues. Previous studies in our laboratory showed that male sterility was controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene, and occurred in pollen mother cell meiophase. To fully explore the global gene expression and identify genes related to male sterility, a RNA-seq analysis was adopted in this study.

The cucumber male sterility gene ms - 3 was fine mapped in a 76Â kb region harboring an MMD1 -like gene Csa3M006660 that may be responsible for the male sterile in cucumber. A cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) male sterile mutant (ms-3) in an advanced-generation inbred line was identified, and genetic analysis revealed that the male sterility trait was controlled by a recessive nuclear gene, ms-3, which was stably inherited.
