Background And Study Aims: The sensitivity of the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (EOB-MRI) was suboptimal. This study evaluated the LI-RADS diagnostic performance in HCC when modifying the definition of washout using the transition phase (TP) or hepatobiliary phase (HBP) hypointensity on EOB-MRI.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective study included patients at high risk of HCC who underwent EOB-MRI from June 2016 to June 2021.

Primary hepatic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is extremely rare, and only a few dozen cases have been reported to date. It can barely be diagnosed before histopathological examination, which necessitates the exclusion of metastatic tumors. In this case, we present a 60-year-old female patient with no comorbidity.

BACKGROUND Lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (LEDVT), a common postoperative breast cancer complication, depends on multiple factors, such as systemic inflammation and immune status. We assessed the preoperative systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) as a LEDVT risk predictor and did stratified nursing intervention based on it. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on 552 patients who underwent breast cancer surgery from January 2019 to May 2020.

Harmful stimuli trigger mutations lead to uncontrolled accumulation of hnRNPA2/B1 in the cytoplasm, exacerbating neuronal damage. Kapβ2 mediates the bidirectional transport of most substances between the cytoplasm and the nucleus. Kapβ2 guides hnRNPA2/B1 back into the nucleus and restores its function, alleviating related protein toxicity.

Bile acids and salts have been shown to play a role in liver carcinogenesis through DNA damage, inflammation, and tumor proliferation. However, the correlation between bile acid metabolism and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis remains unclear. This study aimed to identify a predictive signature of bile acid and bile salt metabolism-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) for HCC prognosis and treatment response.

Center for Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, School of Medicine, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, USA.

Extensive effort has been devoted to the discovery, development, and validation of biomarkers for early disease diagnosis and prognosis as well as rapid evaluation of the response to therapeutic interventions. Genomic and transcriptomic profiling are well-established means to identify disease-associated biomarkers. However, analysis of disease-associated peptidomes can also identify novel peptide biomarkers or signatures that provide sensitive and specific diagnostic and prognostic information for specific malignant, chronic, and infectious diseases.

In critically ill patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the relationship between the early administration of β-blockers and the risks of in-hospital and long-term mortality remains controversial. Furthermore, there are conflicting evidences for the efficacy of the early administration of intravenous followed by oral β-blockers in AMI. We conducted a retrospective analysis of critically ill patients with AMI who received the early administration of β-blockers within 24 hours of admission.

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, The Third Central Hospital of Tianjin, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Extra-corporeal Life Support for Critical Diseases, Artificial Cell Engineering Technology Research Center, Tianjin Institute of Hepatobiliary Disease, Tianjin, China.

In the last few years, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have become major therapeutic agents for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, immunotherapy can activate hepatitis B virus (HBV), and immune clearance may lead to liver failure and even life-threatening conditions. Here we report a case of HCC with HBV-related cirrhosis that caused severe liver injury and rapidly progressed to fatal acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) after only once application of camrelizumab; the patient underwent serological conversion of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) with liver injury.

Postoperative abdominal adhesion is a very common and serious complication, resulting in pain, intestinal obstruction and heavy economic burden. Post-injury inflammation that could activate the coagulation cascade and deposition of fibrin is a major cause of adhesion. Many physical barrier membranes are used to prevent abdominal adhesion, but their efficiency is limited due to the lack of anti-inflammatory activity.

Sci Adv

August 2023

Institute of Systems Biomedicine, Department of Immunology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Beijing Key Laboratory of Tumor Systems Biology, NHC Key Laboratory of Medical Immunology, Peking University Health Science Center, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A quick response of antiviral genes is essential for fighting off viruses, which depends on activated transcription factors and open chromatin for effective gene transcription.
  • XAF1 was identified as a key player that helps regulate chromatin accessibility during viral infections by de-repressing chromatin and facilitating the induction of antiviral genes.
  • Mice lacking XAF1 showed vulnerability to RNA viruses, highlighting its critical role in enhancing antiviral immunity through chromatin remodeling.
