Effects of febuxostat on delaying chronic kidney disease progression: a randomized trial in China.

Int Urol Nephrol

May 2023

Department of Nephrology, Tianjin First Center Hospital, No. 24 Fukang Road, Nankai District, Tianjin, 300192, China.

Background: A few studies have tested febuxostat for its usefulness in delaying chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression by treating hyperuricemia and results were controversial. Thus, we attempted to conduct a randomized controlled study using the Chinese population with advanced grade of CKD.

Methods: One hundred CKD patients in stages 3 and 4 with asymptomatic hyperuricemia from seven medical centers were included in this prospective randomized controlled study and assigned to the control and febuxostat group, the latter of which received febuxostat to titrate to achieve serum uric acid (SUA) < 6 mg/dL.

Background: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare proliferative disease caused by the proliferation of Langerhan's cells and aggregation in multiple organs. Rib involvement is extremely rare and easily misdiagnosed. The biologic behavior of LCH is largely unknown, and it is of utmost importance to differentiate it from tuberculosis and tumors.

Over-expression of IL1R2 in PBMCs of Patients with Coronary Artery Disease and Its Clinical Significance.

Anatol J Cardiol

September 2022

Department of Cardiology, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Ionic-Molecular Function of Cardiovascular Disease, Tianjin Institute of Cardiology, Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, China.

Background: IL-1 has been widely explored and played a role in regulating inflammatory and immune responses to various disorders. Nevertheless, the role of interleukin-1 receptor type II, a protein-coding gene of interleukin-1 in coronary artery disease patients with peripheral blood mononuclear cells, persists to be undetermined.

Methods: Our study discovered the IL-1 receptor type II expression through gene expression omnibus (GEO) public repository based on bioinformatics tools and further validation was carried out between coronary artery disease patients and healthy participants using peripheral blood mononuclear cells samples in Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University.

Background: It is well established that in cryosurgery some cells can survive one freeze thaw cycle and that surviving cells are found at the margin of the frozen lesion. Numerous techniques are being developed to ensure the survival of frozen cells to the margin of the frozen region.

Objective: We thought that it would be of fundamental interest to observe the pattern of cell survival in a liver treated with one freeze-thaw cycle.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence, causes, and risk factors of bilateral visual impairment among rural residents in Tianjin, China, involving over 12,000 participants across various age groups.
  • Results indicated a total bilateral visual impairment prevalence of 2.53%, with cataracts being the most common cause, especially in those over 50, while refractive errors were more prevalent in younger individuals.
  • The findings suggest a higher prevalence of low vision in this population compared to previous studies, highlighting the need for targeted eye healthcare programs, especially for older adults and those with diabetes.

Hyperinsulinemia contributes to impaired-glucose-tolerance-induced renal injury mir-7977/SIRT3 signaling.

Ther Adv Chronic Dis

May 2020

NHC Key Laboratory of Hormones and Development (Tianjin Medical University), Tianjin Key Laboratory of Metabolic Diseases, Tianjin Medical University Chu Hsien-I Memorial Hospital & Tianjin Institute of Endocrinology, Tianjin 300134, China.

Background: Increasing evidence indicates that impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is independently associated with chronic kidney disease, but the characteristics and underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown.

Methods: Here, the cross-sectional study was performed to study the characteristics of IGT-induced renal injury (IGT-RI). Furthermore, urine microRNA profile was evaluated and microRNAs involved in tubular injury were determined by experiments.

Introduction: The effect of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DDP-4) inhibitors versus α-glucosidase inhibitors (AGIs) on the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a real-world setting is unknown. The aim of this real-world study was to compare the glucose-lowering effect and tolerability of vildagliptin as add-on to metformin monotherapy (VM) and AGI as add-on to metformin monotherapy (AM) in Chinese patients with T2DM.

Methods: This was a subgroup analysis of the China Prospective Diabetes Study, a post-marketing, prospective, observational, real-world study conducted at 52 centers in China.

Objective: Pulse pressure is strongly associated with the early development of large-vessel atherosclerotic disease. However, the relationship between pulse pressure and carotid plaque in China is unknown. Thus, we investigated the associations of pulse pressure and mean arterial pressure with the presence of carotid plaques in a low-income population in rural China.

Introduction: The efficacy and safety of vildagliptin alone or with metformin is well established by randomized trials, but it is unknown whether it can be extrapolated to the real-world setting in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of vildagliptin add-on to metformin versus dual oral antidiabetes drug (OAD), non-vildagliptin combination therapies in real-world Chinese patients with T2DM.

Methods: The China Prospective Diabetes Study was a post-marketing, prospective, multicenter, observational, real-world study conducted in 52 centers.

Association of stroke risk with new blood pressure criterion 2017 is unknown in China. We assessed the association between blood pressure (BP) values and stroke risk in a low-income population in Tianjin, China. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values were categorized into five strata and strokes were recorded as stroke, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke.

Aims/introduction: The worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus has been increasing over the past decades, particularly in developing countries. Because of the lack of information regarding changes in diabetes mellitus prevalence, awareness, treatment and control in rural China, we assessed these trends - overall and in the context of related health conditions - to explore the impact of these primary health issues on these rates in a poorly educated, rural population.

Materials And Methods: Diabetes mellitus prevalence, awareness, treatment and control rates were compared between two surveys carried out in 1992 and 2011.

The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and stroke type has remained controversial despite studies demonstrating that BMI is related to stroke risk, especially in specific groups. We assessed the age- and sex-associated impacts of BMI on stroke type in a low-income, poorly educated population in China. The association of BMI with stroke type was estimated using Cox regression analyses in this prospective cohort study, after adjusting for sex, age, education level, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol drinking status.
