Context: Previous studies on the association between thyroid function and carotid plaque have shown contradictory results, which may be attributable to the sensitivity to thyroid hormone indices. This study aimed to analyze the association between thyroid hormone sensitivity and risk of carotid plaque in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and further explore this association according to sex, age, smoking, and drinking status.

Methods: This large-scale, multi-center, retrospective, cross-sectional study included 6679 patients with CHD (age 35-75).

Background: The goal of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the effects of exercise training on long-term health and cardiorespiratory fitness in participants with CHD after surgery and to investigate the optimal type of exercise training for post-operative patients and how to improve adherence to it.

Methods: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science from the date of the inception of the database through August 2021.

Results: Altogether, 1424 records were identified in the literature search.

Objective: To develop an inflammation-based risk stratification tool for operative mortality in patients with acute type A aortic dissection.

Methods: Between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2021, 3124 patients from Beijing Anzhen Hospital were included for derivation, 571 patients from the same hospital were included for internal validation, and 1319 patients from other 12 hospitals were included for external validation. The primary outcome was operative mortality according to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons criteria.

Article Synopsis
  • Vascular calcification (VC) is linked to cardiovascular disease risk, and iron overload may exacerbate this condition.
  • A study using rats demonstrated that excess iron resulted in increased iron levels in both serum and aortic tissue, with notable organ damage observed in the liver and kidneys.
  • The findings indicated that iron overload contributes to calcium deposition in the aorta, accompanied by changes in iron metabolism-related and calcification-related factors, suggesting that iron plays a significant role in the progression of VC.

Background: Penetrating thoracic injury is a type of critical illness with a high mortality rate, which often involves the heart, large blood vessels, and lungs. Penetrating cardiac injury is a very serious condition, and most patients die rapidly within minutes due to hemorrhagic shock and acute cardiac tamponade. Due to the critical condition and rapid development of this type of injury, most patients die before reaching the hospital.

Objectives: Over the past decade, the incidence and global burden of coronary heart disease (CHD) have increased in the young population. We aimed to identify patient characteristics and risk factors for premature CHD, including single-vessel disease (SVD) and multivessel disease (MVD).

Design: Retrospective, cross-sectional study.

Backgroundand Objective: Studies have highlighted the significant role of staged percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for a multivessel disease (MVD) among patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, the relative benefit of staged vs. culprit-only PCI for MVD in elderly patients with STEMI remains undetermined.

Background: The neuroprotective effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) in patients undergoing elective cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)-assisted coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) or valvular cardiac surgery remains unclear.

Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled superior clinical trial was conducted in patients undergoing elective on-pump coronary artery bypass surgery or valve surgery. Before anesthesia induction, patients were randomly assigned to RIPC (three 5-min cycles of inflation and deflation of blood pressure cuff on the upper limb) or the control group.

Background: Pneumatic muscle actuator (PMA) actuated multisection continuum arms are widely applied in various fields with high flexibility and bionic properties. Nonetheless, their kinematic modeling and control strategy proves to be extremely challenging tasks.

Methods: The relationship expression between the deformation parameters and the length of PMA with the geometric method is obtained under the assumption of piecewise constant curvature.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) requires more professional exercise modalities to improve the efficiency of treatment. Adaptive posture-balance cardiac rehabilitation exercise (APBCRE) is an emerging, balance-based therapy from clinical experience, but lacks evidence of validity. Our study aimed to observe and assess the rehabilitation effect of APBCRE on patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

Chloroxine (5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline) is a molecule utilized in some shampoos for the therapy of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp and dandruff. In this study, we investigated the inhibition effects of 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline and methyl 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate compounds on the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A (HMG-CoA Reductase) and urease enzymes. We have obtained results for the HMG-CoA Reductase and urease enzymes at the micromolar level.

The middle-aged male was diagnosed with "acute anterior wall myocardial infarction" based on clinical symptoms, laboratory examination, and coronary angiography (CAG), but his ECG showed no significant change in QRS wave or ST-T within 6 h of admission. Thus, a perfect explanation with the existing theory is difficult, and only the case is presented here.

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors have been shown to inhibit pyroptosis and apoptosis, which play important roles in the development and progression of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI). However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated the potential effect of PCSK9 inhibitors on the prevalence of CI-AKI after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This study aimed to determine whether PCSK9 inhibitors are associated with the prevalence of CI-AKI.

Lancet Reg Health West Pac

November 2022

School of Public Health, Key Lab of Public Health Safety of the Ministry of Education and NHC Key Lab of Health Technology Assessment, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a serious and potentially fatal cardiovascular condition, making it crucial to identify its modifiable risk factors, particularly related to temperature changes.
  • A nationwide study in China analyzed data from over 40,000 AAD cases to explore the relationship between low temperatures and fluctuations in daily temperature on the risk of AAD onset, finding significant risks associated with these factors.
  • Results indicated that low temperatures were linked to 23.13% of AAD cases, with central heating appearing to reduce this risk during colder months, showcasing the importance of temperature control in public health strategies.
