Objectives: To construct an improved air health index (AHI) based on cardiovascular years of life lost (YLL) in Tianjin and assess its utility.

Methods: We derived the exposure-response coefficients from time-series models and calculated the excess YLL (EYLL) for simultaneous exposure to air pollution and non-optimum temperature. The AHI was developed using the EYLL at the WHO 2021 Air Quality Guideline annual mean values and optimum temperature as a reference.

  • The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in breast cancer patients throughout their treatment cycle, focusing on different subtypes of the disease.
  • A comprehensive search of various medical databases resulted in the inclusion of 24 studies, analyzing the ctDNA detection rates and its impact on recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS).
  • Results indicated that while ctDNA presence did not significantly affect RFS and OS in hormone receptor-positive patients, it was associated with poorer survival outcomes in hormone receptor-negative and triple-negative breast cancer patients.

Balancing Maillard reaction products formation and antioxidant activities for improved sensory quality and health benefit properties of pan baked buns.

Food Res Int

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Food Nutrition and Safety, College of Food Science and Engineering, Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Tianjin 300457, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how different baking temperatures (190 °C, 210 °C, 230 °C) and times (7 min, 10 min, 14 min) affect the production of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) and antioxidant activity in pan baked buns.
  • Results showed that baking at 210 °C for 14 minutes or 230 °C for 10-14 minutes significantly increased levels of key MRPs (like glyoxal and methylglyoxal) and boosted antioxidant properties.
  • The ideal baking condition identified for improving both antioxidant benefits and sensory quality while minimizing MRPs was 210 °C for 10 minutes, indicating a balance between flavor and health benefits can be achieved.

The Impact of Exposure to Iodine and Fluorine in Drinking Water on Thyroid Health and Intelligence in School-Age Children: A Cross-Sectional Investigation.

Nutrients

August 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, School of Public Health, Tianjin Medical University, 22 Qixiangtai Road, Heping District, Tianjin 300070, China.

Iodine and fluorine, as halogen elements, are often coexisting in water environments, with nearly 200 million people suffering from fluorosis globally, and, in 11 countries and territories, adolescents have iodine intakes higher than that required for the prevention of iodine deficiency disorders. It has been suggested that excess iodine and/or fluorine can affect thyroid health and intellectual development, especially in children, but their combined effect has been less studied in this population. This study investigated 399 school-age children in Tianjin, China, collected drinking water samples from areas where the school-age children lived, and grouped the respondents according to iodine and fluorine levels.

Exp Gerontol

October 2024

Department of Nutrition and Food Science, School of Public Health, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin 300070, China; Tianjin Key Laboratory of Environment, Nutrition and Public Health, Tianjin 300070, China; Key Laboratory of Prevention and Control of Major Diseases in the Population, Ministry of Education, School of Public Health, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, China. Electronic address:

Total cholesterol (TC) and the cholesterol oxidation product 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) are both increased in the elderly. Accumulating evidence has linked 27-OHC to glucose metabolism in the brain, while docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been shown to positively regulate the 27-OHC levels. However, it is unclear whether DHA may affect glucose metabolism in the brain by regulating 27-OHC levels.

National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Tracking and Forecasting for Infectious Diseases, National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • HIV and syphilis outbreaks predominantly affect men who have sex with men (MSM), but there has been limited research on their incidence rates and trends in this group in China.
  • A decade-long study in Tianjin reveals a decreasing rate of HIV incidence alongside an increasing rate of syphilis in MSM.
  • The findings highlight the need for targeted public health interventions to address the shared risk factors for both infections within this community.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at a high risk of HIV infection and should be offered effective preventive measures, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, PrEP uptake among eligible MSM was not as high as desired. Diverse research findings on how risky sexual behaviors affect PrEP uptake highlight the necessity for a comprehensive investigation.

July 2024

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Function and Application of Biological Macromolecular Structures, School of Life Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China.

Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have recently emerged as noninvasive disease biomarkers. Quantitative detection of circulating miRNAs could offer significant information for clinical diagnosis due to its significance in the development of biological processes. In response to the current challenges of circulating miRNA detection, we introduce a sensitive, selective, and versatile circulating miRNA detection strategy using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-catalyzed RNA-primed DNA polymerization (TCRDP) coupled with semiarbitrary qPCR (SAPCR).
