Background: Glaucoma has an insidious onset with non-specific early symptoms, often leading patients to delay in seeking help. However, postponing the first ophthalmological consultation can result in delayed diagnosis and treatment, with adverse effects on vision. This study explored the factors associated with delayed first ophthalmological consultation in patients with primary glaucoma, with the overarching aim of informing measures to reduce delayed consultation and avoid the consequent adverse outcomes.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess potent immunomodulatory activity and have been extensively investigated for their therapeutic potential in treating inflammatory disorders. However, the mechanisms underlying the immunosuppressive function of MSCs are not fully understood, hindering the development of standardized MSC-based therapies for clinical use. In this study, we profile the single-cell transcriptomes of MSCs isolated from adipose tissue (AD), bone marrow (BM), placental chorionic membrane (PM), and umbilical cord (UC).

Intense ultraviolet (UV) exposure can cause phototoxic reactions, such as skin inflammation, resulting in injury. UV is a direct cause of DNA damage, but the mechanisms underlying transcriptional regulation within cells after DNA damage are unclear. The bioinformatics analysis of transcriptome sequencing data from UV-irradiated and non-UV-irradiated skin showed that transcription-related proteins, such as HSF4 and COIL, mediate cellular response to UV irradiation.

Our previous research shown that tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced protein 8 (TNFAIP8) is elevated in the plasma extracellular vesicles and vitreous humor in diabetic retinopathy (DR). TNFAIP8 also significantly increases the viability of human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) and promotes cell migration and tube formation in vitro. To comprehensively explore its role in DR, we investigated the effect of TNFAIP8 on DR development using an animal model in this study.

Glycation is a nonenzymatically catalyzed spontaneous reaction that eventually leads to the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), which can bind to the receptor for AGEs (RAGE). The consequences are oxidative damage, an inflammatory response, and aging. In this work, we synthesized echinacoside-zinc coordination polymers (ECH-Zn) by using the coordination interaction between the catechol group of ECH and zinc ions.

Purpose: The urbanization of suburbs has a significant impact on ocular health, however, the effect of this phenomenon on the epidemiology of eye diseases in the sub-urbanization region of China remains unclear. In this context, the population-based Beichen Eye Study (BCES) was conducted in the Beichen District of Tianjin, China. This article aims to summarize the background, design scheme and operation process of the study.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of vision impairment in the global working-age population. In China, with one-third of the world's diabetes population estimated at 141 million, the blindness prevalence due to DR has increased significantly. The country's geographic variations in socioeconomic status have led to prominent disparities in DR prevalence, screening and management.

Purpose: To compare the performance of Barrett toric calculator incorporated with measured posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA) derived from IOL Master 700 and Pentacam HR versus predicted PCA.
Methods: The predicted residual astigmatism using Barrett toric IOL calculator with predicted PCA, measured PCA from IOL Master 700 and measured PCA from Pentacam were calculated with the preoperative keratometry and intended IOL axis with modification. The vector analysis was performed to calculate the mean absolute prediction error (MAE), the centroid of the prediction error and the percentage of eyes with a prediction error within ±0.

Background: Uveitis and posterior scleritis are sight-threatening diseases with undefined pathogenesis and accurate diagnosis remains challenging.
Methods: Two plasma-derived extracellular vesicle (EV) subpopulations, small and large EVs, obtained from patients with ankylosing spondylitis-related uveitis, Behcet's disease uveitis, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome, and posterior scleritis were subjected to proteomics analysis alongside plasma using SWATH-MS. A comprehensive bioinformatics analysis was performed on the proteomic profiles of sEVs, lEVs, and plasma.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between multiple higher-order aberrations (HOAs) subgroups and pupil offset, as well as to analyze the factors affecting postoperative corneal HOAs in patients with different degrees of refractive errors.
Methods: We enrolled 160 patients (316 eyes) aged ≥ 18 years who had undergone femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) treatment. Based on the relationship between the preoperative pupil offset and the postoperative ΔHOAs, all patients were divided into two groups: group I (pupil offset ≤ 0.

Oxidative stress is closely associated with diabetes and can cause free radical accumulation and eventually lead to ocular surface tissue damage. The purpose of this study was to investigate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) expression in the lacrimal gland (LG), meibomian gland, and cornea of diabetes-related dry eye mice and whether the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone can alleviate the oxidative stress of the ocular surface, thereby improving the condition of diabetes-related dry eye. Quantitative RT-PCR (Q-PCR) showed that the PPARγ, catalase, glutathione peroxidase 3, and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) mRNA expression levels in the LG of diabetes-related dry eye mice decreased at 8 and 12 weeks.

Methods: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, UWF pseudocolor images were graded on the Eyenuk image viewing, grading, and annotation platform for the severity of DR considering only the regions within the ETDRS 7-fields as well as the entire UWF image using two different protocols: 1) the simple International Classification of Diabetic Retinopathy (ICDR) scale and 2) the more complex DRCR.net Protocol AA grading scale.

Retinal neovascular, neurodegenerative, and inflammatory diseases represented by diabetic retinopathy are the main types of blinding eye disorders that continually cause the increased burden worldwide. Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is an endogenous factor with multiple effects including neurotrophic activity, anti-angiogenesis, anti-tumorigenesis, and anti-inflammatory activity. PEDF activity depends on the interaction with the proteins on the cell surface.

Purpose: We sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of plasmin injection in the capsular bag during the cataract operation for the prevention of posterior capsule opacification.
Methods: Thirty-seven anterior capsular flaps taken from phacoemulsification surgery were immersed in either 1 µg/mL plasmin (plasmin group, n = 27) or phosphate-buffered saline (control group, n = 10) for 2 minutes and photographed after fixation and nuclear staining to compare the numbers of residual lens epithelial cells. In the animal experiments, the plasmin solution was injected into the capsular bag and remained for 5 minutes during hydrodissection or after lens extraction.
