Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) affect several physiological processes, including visual acuity, but their relationship with diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains elusive. The aim of this study was to determine whether PUFAs have a causal effect on DR. PUFAs- (total and omega-3 [FAw3] and omega-6 [FAw6] fatty acids and their ratio) and DR-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms derived from genome-wide association studies; sample sizes were 114,999 for fatty acids and 216,666 for any DR (ADR), background DR (BDR), severe non-proliferative DR (SNPDR), and proliferative DR (PDR).

Hitchhiking, a recently developed bio-inspired cargo delivery system, has been harnessed for diverse applications. By leveraging the interactions between nanoparticles and circulatory cells or proteins, hitchhiking enables efficient navigation through the vasculature while evading immune system clearance. Moreover, it allows for targeted delivery of nutrients to tissues, surveillance of the immune system, and pathogen elimination.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) interaction with RNA-Binding proteins (RBPs) plays an important role in immunological processes. The generation of antigen-specific Th17 cells is closely associated with autoimmune pathogenesis. However, the function of lncRNA-RBP interactions in the regulation of pathogenic Th17 cell responses during autoimmunity remains poorly understood.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the risk factors and develop a prognostic nomogram of long-term low vision after diabetic vitrectomy.
Methods: This retrospective study included 186 patients (250 eyes) that underwent primary vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy with a minimum follow-up period of one year. Patients were assigned to the training cohort (200 eyes) or validation cohort (50 eyes) at a 4:1 ratio randomly.

Background: Several common retinal diseases that cause blindness are characterised by pathological neovascularisation accompanied by inflammation and neurodegeneration, including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). The current treatment strategies for these diseases have limited benefits. Thus, safer and more effective alternative approaches are required.

Background: Prevention of myopia should begin before school age. However, few population-based cohort studies have investigated refractive status in preschool children with cycloplegia. This study aimed to investigate the post-COVID-19 refraction and ocular biometric parameters of preschool children in Beijing Tongzhou District.

Background: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and its subtype, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), are common choroidal vasculopathies. Although they share many common clinical manifestations and treatment strategies, a lack of comprehensive analysis of these conditions means that it is difficult for researchers to further explore the common pathomechanisms of nAMD and PCV. The aim of this study was to characterize aqueous humor (AH) proteome alterations and identify a novel biomarker related to both nAMD and PCV.

Myopia is a major public health issue. However, interventional modalities for nonpathologic myopia are limited due to its complicated pathogenesis and the lack of precise targets. Here, we show that in guinea pig form-deprived myopia (FDM) and lens-induced myopia (LIM) models, the early initiation, phenotypic correlation, and stable maintenance of cochlin protein upregulation at the interface between retinal photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is identified by a proteomic analysis of ocular posterior pole tissues.

Copper (Cu) is a vital trace element for maintaining human health. Current evidence suggests that genes responsible for regulating copper influx and detoxification help preserve its homeostasis. Adequate Cu levels sustain normal cardiac and blood vessel activity by maintaining mitochondrial function.

Photoreceptors (PRs) degeneration is central to visual impairment and loss in most blind retinal diseases, including age-related macular disease (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). PRs are susceptible to oxidative stress owing to their unique metabolic features. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that the targeting oxidative stress is a promising treatment strategy for PR degeneration.

Background: Epiretinal membranes in patients with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) consist of extracellular matrix and a number of cell types including retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and fibroblasts, whose contraction causes retinal detachment. In RPE cells depletion of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor (PDGFR)β suppresses vitreous-induced Akt activation, whereas in fibroblasts Akt activation through indirect activation of PDGFRα by growth factors outside the PDGF family (non-PDGFs) plays an essential role in experimental PVR. Whether non-PDGFs in the vitreous, however, were also able to activate PDGFRβ in RPE cells remained elusive.

Purpose: We investigated the therapeutic effect of recombinant thymosin β4 (rTβ4) on rabbit autoimmune dacryoadenitis, an animal model of SS dry eye, and explore its mechanisms.
Methods: Rabbits were treated topically with rTβ4 or PBS solution after disease onset for 28 days, and clinical scores were determined by assessing tear secretion, break-up time, fluorescein, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and periodic acid-Schiff. The expression of inflammatory mediators in the lacrimal glands were measured by real-time PCR.
