Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for patients with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) and examined factors affecting MG exacerbation after COVID-19 infection.
  • Among the 1013 adult MG patients surveyed, only a small percentage experienced exacerbation following vaccination, while a notable number faced exacerbation after COVID-19 infection, particularly those with generalized MG.
  • The findings suggest that COVID-19 vaccines are generally safe for MG patients in stable condition, but those with generalized MG may be at higher risk for exacerbation following infection.

A framework of myocardial bridge detection with x-ray angiography sequence.

Biomed Eng Online

October 2023

The School of Precision Instrument and Opto-Electronics Engineering, Tianjin University, Nankai District, No.92 Weijin Road, Tianjin, China.

Background: Myocardial bridges are congenital anatomical abnormalities in which myocardium covers a segment of coronary arteries, leading to stenocardia, myocardial ischemia, and sudden cardiac death in severe cases. However, automatic diagnosis of myocardial bridge presents significant challenges.

Method: A novel framework of myocardial bridge detection with x-ray angiography sequence is proposed, which can realize automatic detection of vessel stenosis and myocardial bridge.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of buttress plate and cannulated screw in the treatment of anteromedial coronoid fracture with posteromedial rotatory instability (PMRI).

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients who were diagnosed with O'Driscoll type 2 fractures combined with elbow posteromedial rotatory instability and underwent surgery for anteromedial coronoid fracture between August 2014 and March 2019. They were divided into buttress plate (n=16) and cannulated screw (n=11) groups.

Background: Early identification of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is instrumental in predicting patients prognosis. However, since a fixed criterion with high accuracy cannot be generalized to molecular subtypes, our study first aimed to redefine grades of clinical response to NAC in invasive breast cancer patients (IBC). And then developed a prognostic model based on clinical features and ultrasound semantics.

Objective: Use of tacrolimus in mild to moderate myasthenia gravis (MG) is generally limited to glucocorticoid-refractory cases; the advantage of mono-tacrolimus over mono-glucocorticoids is unknown.

Methods: We included mild to moderate MG patients treated with mono-tacrolimus (mono-TAC) or mono-glucocorticoids (mono-GC). The correlation between the immunotherapy options and the treatment efficacy and side effects were examined in 1:1 propensity-score matching.

Orthop Surg

October 2022

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Biomedical Detecting Techniques and Instruments, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China.

Objective: A stable animal model was needed to study bone non-union caused by insufficient blood supply, the main object of this paper is to develop a medial malleolar fracture model with controllable arterial vascular injuries in rats for revealing the biochemical mechanism of non-union by insufficient blood supply.

Methods: A total of 18 rats were randomly divided into three equal groups: the Sham group, the Fracture group, and the Fracture + Vascular group. The animals were subjected to unilateral medial malleolar bone fracture and vascular injury using customized molding equipment.

Objective: Although widely used in clinical practice, vertebral augmentation procedure (VAP) for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) is not supported. Recently, the effect of recombinant human parathyroid hormone (1-34) (rhPTH) has been paid great attention for its efficacy in anti-osteoporosis and bone union. This study aims to explore the outcome of rhPTH on acute OVCF and compare it with VAP to clarify its therapeutic advantages.

Acoustically accelerated neural differentiation of human embryonic stem cells.

Acta Biomater

October 2022

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Engineering, Cardiff University, Cardiff CF24 3AA, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have potential in targeted therapies and drug testing, but their differentiation into mature neurons is a slow process.
  • An acoustic stimulator utilizing surface acoustic waves (SAWs) has been developed to enhance the speed of neuron production from hESCs, showing significant acceleration in neural differentiation.
  • Research using RNA sequencing, qPCR, and immunostaining revealed changes in gene expressions and an increase in mature neuron markers while decreasing stem cell markers, confirming the effectiveness of SAW stimulation in promoting neural differentiation.

Deep learning to diagnose Hashimoto's thyroiditis from sonographic images.

Nat Commun

June 2022

Tianjin Cancer Institute, Tianjin's Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Key Laboratory of Cancer Prevention and Therapy, National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, China.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is the main cause of hypothyroidism. We develop a deep learning model called HTNet for diagnosis of HT by training on 106,513 thyroid ultrasound images from 17,934 patients and test its performance on 5051 patients from 2 datasets of static images and 1 dataset of video data. HTNet achieves an area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of 0.
