Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a mild self-limited childhood infectious disease caused by a variety of enteroviruses (EVs). To investigate the molecular epidemiology of EVs associated with HFMD and their clinical presentation during the HFMD outbreak that occurred in the Jenin district, Palestine, from May to August 2024. Forty-four (44) throat and vesicular swabs were tested for enteroviral infections using two RT-PCR assays targeting both the 5'NTR and the VP1-2A regions of the enteroviral genome for the diagnosis and genotyping.

Ear Nose Throat J

February 2025

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, China.

A case of a 60-year-old male patient with thyroid cancer invading the trachea was presented in the current study. After the initial surgery via a sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) clavicular periosteal flap for tracheal reconstruction, the patient experienced flap necrosis. Subsequent debridement and tracheocutaneostomy were performed, followed by a successful repair of the tracheal defect using a platysma myocutaneous flap.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the relevance of influenza A virus (IAV) in acutely exacerbating airway inflammatory response and disrupting immune function in elderly COPD patients.

Methods: The group conducted a pre-test: using multiplex combined real-time PCR detection kits Multiple real⁃time PCR was used to detect twenty-four pathogens, 385 patients clinically diagnosed with COPD were tested for viral nucleic acid in throat swabs. At the same time, peripheral blood leukapheresis was collected from both groups of patients, and their IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β, and TNF-α levels were detected, along with the levels of T-cell differentiation markers CD4 and CD8, to assess the influence of influenza virus on the immune function of elderly COPD patients and its relevance to the acute exacerbation of airway inflammatory response in elderly COPD patients.

This paper describes the development and utilization of two design evaluation metrics aimed to measure design performance for improving circulation and workflow, situational awareness, and visibility for medication-related activities for anesthesia providers' within their workspace in operating rooms. Proactive performance evaluation of the design of critical areas such as operating rooms can help improve the safety of patients and staff workflows. This paper builds on previous work on task-switching behaviors in anesthesia workspaces to develop performance-based design evaluation metrics for anesthesia providers' workspaces based on their tasks performed during the patient preparation, intra-operative, and post-operative phases of the surgery, considering the presence of multiple anesthesia providers.

Numerous studies have documented the evidence of virus-virus interactions at the population, host, and cellular levels. However, the impact of these interactions on the within-host diversity of influenza viral populations remains unexplored. Our study identified 13 respiratory viral pathogens from the nasopharyngeal swab samples (NPSs) of influenza-like-illness (ILI) patients during the 2012/13 influenza season using multiplex RT-PCR.

Background: Vitamin D (VD) supplementation has increased considerably in the last decade, whether for the prevention or treatment of numerous diseases, including bone, cardiovascular, endocrine, neurologic, psychological, respiratory, infectious, or oncological. The primary objective of this scoping review was to examine and synthesize the scientific evidence on the role of VD in all-type cancer patients undergoing adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy with chemotherapy (CT) or radiotherapy (RT), namely in improving side effects.

Methods: This review was conducted by selecting papers from the CINAHL, Scopus and PubMed databases based on the descriptor terms mesh and title/abstract, taking into consideration the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, following the PRISMA-ScR (PRISMA extension for scoping reviews) statement.

Quality Assurance of a Hospital-Based Auditory Verbal Intervention for Children with Hearing Loss.

J Clin Med

February 2025

Copenhagen Hearing and Balance Centre, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Audiology Clinic, Rigshospitalet, Inge Lehmanns Vej 8, 2100 Copenhagen, Denmark.

Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) has spread globally in the past few years due to its proven positive effect as a rehabilitation method for children with hearing loss (HL). In 2023, a three-year hospital-based AV intervention was implemented in Denmark as a government-funded offer to all children with HL. In the present study, we introduce and study a protocol for facilitating this implementation with a specific focus on clinical applicability and quality assurance.

A Surgical Hazard During Adenoidectomy in Children-A Case Report.

Children (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, University Hospital Split, 21 000 Split, Croatia.

Adenoidectomy is one of the world's most frequently performed surgical procedures. Although the operation is relatively simple and with a very low percentage of complications, it can sometimes be accompanied by fatal complications. One such scenario arises when an unrecognized aberrant course of the internal carotid artery is present, particularly if the artery is near or in contact with the oropharynx or nasopharynx.

Synthesis of titania/activated carbon composites for the synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis of lindane in aqueous solutions.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

February 2025

Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas, Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences, Transport Phenomena and Porous Media Laboratory, Stadiou Str, Platani, 26504, Patras, Greece.

Lindane (LIND) is an organochlorine pesticide, belonging to the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which are bioaccumulative with detrimental effects on human health and environment. In the present work, activated carbon (AC) produced from coffee waste after activation with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and pyrolysis at 800 °C (CWAC-NaOH-800) is tested as adsorbent of LIND, and as substrate for the synthesis of hybrid adsorbent/photocatalytic materials of titanium oxide with activated carbon (TiO/AC) via the sol-gel method, aiming at the synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis of LIND. Three different TiO/AC materials were synthesized at mass ratio of TiO to AC equal to 2.

June 2025

School of Chemistry, Xi'an Key Laboratory of Sustainable Energy Material Chemistry, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, 710049, PR China; State Key Laboratory for Animal Disease Control and Prevention, College of Veterinary Medicine, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, 730000, PR China; Instrumental Analysis Center of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, 710049, PR China. Electronic address:

Rapid and sensitive detection of pathogenic viruses is essential for controlling pandemics. In this study, the bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOFs) with enhanced peroxidase (POD)-like activity, termed as MIL-101(CoFe), was developed for ultra-fast colorimetric detection and highly sensitive quantitative Raman assay of influenza viruses in nasopharyngeal swab specimens. The synergistic effect between Fe and Co in MIL-101(CoFe) significantly enhanced the POD-like activity, enabling efficient catalysis of the substrate TMB in the presence of HO to produce blue oxidized TMB (ox-TMB), which has a characteristic Raman peak at 1609 cm.

Background And Aims: The use of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) in tracheal intubation is widely accepted in anesthetic induction, but adverse effects are possible. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare influence of use and nonuse of NMBAs on incidence of laryngeal complications and intubating conditions in surgical patients.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials comparing use of NMBAs with either placebo or no treatment for oral tracheal intubation in adult patients under general anesthesia.
