Alcohol is a high-risk factor of the head and neck tumor, and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase type 2(ALDH2) is an important alcohol metabolism enzyme in the human body, whose function is to metabolize acetaldehyde into non-toxic acetic acid in the human body. Studies have shown that ALDH2 gene polymorphisms increase the risk of head and neck tumors by affecting enzyme activity to regulate the rate of alcohol metabolism in the body, and high levels of ALDH2 expression are beneficial for enhancing head and neck tumor immunity and improve prognosis. This article aims to review the research progress on the relationship between ALDH2 and the occurrence and treatment of head and neck tumors.

Development of clinical practice guidelines and primary care referral pathways for management of otorhinolaryngological conditions in Pakistan.

BMC Prim Care

March 2025

Section of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Surgery, Aga Khan University, Stadium Road, PO Box 3500, Karachi, 74800, Pakistan.

Background: Diseases of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) account for a significant portion of a primary care physician's practice in Pakistan, a South Asian lower-middle income country. This increasing burden demands comprehensive clinical practice guidelines and primary care clinical referral algorithms to be devised so that general physicians can adequately provide standardized primary health care and prevent needless specialist ENT referrals.

Methods: We selected eight guidelines regarding epistaxis, neck masses, hearing loss, Meniere's disease, dysphonia, allergic rhinitis, acute otitis externa, and rhinosinusitis from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation as the source guidelines and employed the GRADE-ADOLOPMENT approach to contextualize guidelines by adopting, adapting, or excluding recommendations from these guidelines.

Pocket guide: biologics in upper and lower airways in adults.

Rhinology

March 2025

The European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases Scientific Expert Team Members.

The introduction of biologics for the treatment of severe upper and lower (type 2) airway inflammation has been a gamechanger in the management of these diseases. Biologics are injectable medications targeting different molecules relevant in (type 2) inflammation in patients with severe (type 2) airway diseases, like asthma, eosinophilic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and those who remain uncontrolled despite regular treatment (1-3). After the phase 3 trials, showing significant impact on symptoms, quality of life and interventions like surgery (for the upper airways) and exacerbations needing hospitalisation (for the lower airways), biologics are now used in daily practice in many parts of the world (4, 5).

Automatic detection and identification of pharynxgolaryngeal activities (PLA) such as swallowing, speaking, and coughing, are crucial steps in developing a system for diagnosing dysphagia (swallowing disorders) using high-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA) signals. Using sensors placed on the throat, HRCA provides clinicians with a non-invasive means of assessing swallowing. This study introduces a new approach based on depthwise CNN and LSTM networks to automatically detect and identify PLA in synchronized accelerometer and microphone signals.
