Rationale: Choriocarcinoma is a highly invasive gestational trophoblastic neoplasm, usually metastasis to lung and brain, but occurrence of choriocarcinoma following spontaneous abortion presenting as a vertebral tumor is extremely rare, to the best of our knowledge. Because of the poor diagnosis and high malignancy, the low progression-free survival follows up.

Patient Concerns: We here are reporting a case of choriocarcinoma that presented with vertebral tumor induced paralysis of limbs and incontinence of urine.

High aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity is a metabolic feature of adult stem cells and various cancer stem cells (CSCs). The ALDEFLUOR system is currently the most commonly used method for evaluating ALDH enzyme activity in viable cells. This system is applied extensively in the isolation of normal stem cells and CSCs from heterogeneous cell populations.

Aggravated pulmonary injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage in PDGF-B mice.

Chin Neurosurg J

June 2020

Department of Neurosurgery, Southwest Hospital, Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, 400038 China.

Background: Recent advances in surgical and neuroprotective strategies could effectively manage the pathophysiological progression of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, pulmonary dysfunction frequently occurs in SAH patients with an increased risk of unsatisfactory outcomes. Based on the similar microvascular structures in the blood-air barrier and blood-brain barrier and possible brain-lung crosstalks, we believe that pericytes may be involved in both neurological and pulmonary dysfunction after SAH.

The aim of this study was to identify the predictive role of baseline anti-erythropoietin (anti-EPO) antibody levels in follow-up EPO demand in maintenance dialysis patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Baseline routine blood parameters, clinical data, dialysis-related parameters, EPO, anti-EPO antibody, and anti-EPO-receptor antibody were also measured. Differences in the abovementioned variables were compared among four intervals of the EPO demand index (EDI).

Objective: The potential roles and mechanisms of pericytes in maintaining blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity, which would be helpful for the development of therapeutic strategies for subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), remain unclear. We sought to provide evidence on the potential role of pericytes in BBB disruption and possible involvement and mechanism of CypA signaling in both cultured pericytes and SAH models.

Methods: Three hundred fifty-three adult male C57B6J mice weighing 22 to 30 g, 29 CypA mice, 30 CypA (flox/flox) mice, and 30 male neonatal C57B6J mice were used to investigate the time course of CypA expression in pericytes after SAH, the intrinsic function and mechanism of CypA in pericytes, and whether the known receptor CD147 mediates these effects.

TGF-β induces ST2 and programs ILC2 development.

Nat Commun

January 2020

Mucosal Immunology Section, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), 30 Convent Drive, Bethesda, MD, 20892, USA.

The molecular pathways underlying the development of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are mostly unknown. Here we show that TGF-β signaling programs the development of ILC2s from their progenitors. Specifically, the deficiency of TGF-β receptor II in bone marrow progenitors results in inefficient development of ILC2s, but not ILC1s or ILC3s.

Zhongguo Wei Zhong Bing Ji Jiu Yi Xue

October 2006

Institute of Burn Research, Southwest Hospital, Third Medical University, State Key Laboratory of Trauma, Burn and Combined Injury, Chongqing 400038, China.

Objective: To observe the effect of glutamine given through different avenues on intestine mucosal barrier damage induced by severe burn injury.

Methods: One hundred and sixty Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: namely normal control (C group), burned control (B group), parenteral nutrition with glutamine (PN+GLN group) and enteral nutrition with glutamine (EN+GLN group). Rats in B group, PN+GLN group, and EN+GLN group were subjected to 30% total body surface area (TBSA) full-thickness burn injury.

Background: p16INK4a and p14ARF, encoded by gene INK4a/ARF located at chromosome 9p21, are cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors. Both p16INK4a and p14ARF are cell cycle regulatory proteins and play an important role in Rb and p53 passways respectively. In this study, wild-type INK4a/ARF gene was transfected into human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549, in which this gene site was lost, and the effects on the cell's biological behavior were investigated.

[The roles of nuclear Ca2+/CaM dependent kinases and calcineurin on the development of myocardial hypertrophy in rat].

Zhongguo Ying Yong Sheng Li Xue Za Zhi

November 2004

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Xinqiao Hospital, Third Medical University, Chongqing 400037, China.

Aim: To evaluate whether protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation in nuclei play roles in the development of myocardial hypertrophy, distribution of protein kinases and phosphatases in cell fractions were determined.

Methods: The model of hypertensive rat was established by abdominal aortic constriction. Velocity and isopyknic gradient centrifugation was employed to fractionate rat myocardium to membrane, cytosol and nuclei.

[Prospects of Research on Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells].

Zhongguo Shi Yan Xue Ye Xue Za Zhi

March 2000

Institute of Combined Injury, The Third Medical University, Chongqing 400038, China.

Besides hematopoietic stem cells, bone marrow also contains another type of stem cells called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). With different induced conditions, MSCs have the ability to differentiate into a variety of nonhematopoietic tissue cells, including osteoblasts, chondroblast, adipocytes, myoblasts, astrocytes, and so on. MSCs can be readily obtained from bone marrow by their adhesion to plastic and expansion in culture.

In order to clarify the importance of nuclear IP(3)Rs in the development of myocardial hypertrophy, a hypertensive rat model was established by abdominal aortic constriction, and velocity and isopyknic gradient centrifugation was employed to fractionate the cardiac nuclei. The maximal number of binding sites (B(max)) and dissociation constant (Kd) of IP(3) to the nuclear envelopes were measured by [(3)H] IP(3) binding assay. The existence of IP(3)Rs on myocardial nuclear envelope was confirmed.

To acquire the phage-displayed mimotopes which mimic the specificity of hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg), a random peptide library expressing linear peptide with 12 amino acids in length were used to screen with the serum from a hepatitis B virus infected patient in the recovery phase. After 3 rounds of biopanning, the positive phages were confirmed by competitive ELISA using HBsAg/P33. Two phagotopes were identified and one of them was confirmed as mimotope by competition experiment.

Relationship between pituitary ACTH content and hypothalamic catecholamines in the rat.

Res Exp Med (Berl)

November 1989

Third Medical University Hospital, Dept. of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Mainz, Federal Republic of Germany.

Hypothalamic concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine were determined in rats following 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of the locus coeruleus and subcoeruleus system and following sham-operation. These concentrations were correlated with pituitary ACTH content. While the lesion procedure did not have a major effect on hypothalamic monoamine levels, we were able to demonstrate a strong negative correlation between hypothalamic epinephrine and pituitary ACTH content independent of the experimental condition.
