Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the outcomes of two different types of stents (bicanalicular and mono-canalicular) used for lacrimal duct reconstruction after cancer treatment, as previous comparisons were lacking.
  • A total of 75 patients were enrolled and divided into two groups, with significant differences found in stent duration and some postoperative complications like stent prolapse and punctal issues.
  • Overall, both stent types were equally effective in maintaining lacrimal duct function and minimizing tear overproduction post-surgery, highlighting the importance of appropriate case selection for optimal results.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the long-term effectiveness of unilateral adrenalectomy (U-Adx) as a treatment for primary bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (PBMAH), a type of Cushing's syndrome, which traditionally required bilateral adrenalectomy but posed significant risks.
  • Researchers evaluated 61 patients treated with U-Adx between 2004 and 2022, analyzing their postoperative biochemical outcomes and improving comorbidities such as hypertension and glucose metabolism.
  • Results showed that about 50% of patients achieved initial remission within six months; however, a significant percentage experienced persistent hypercortisolism or recurrence at the last follow-up, highlighting the need for further understanding of prognostic predictors for

Automated diagnostic systems can enhance the accuracy and efficiency of pathological diagnoses, nuclear segmentation plays a crucial role in computer-aided diagnosis systems for histopathology. However, achieving accurate nuclear segmentation is challenging due to the complex background tissue structures and significant variations in cell morphology and size in pathological images. In this study, we have proposed a U-Net based deep learning model, called MA-Net(Multifunctional Aggregation Network), to accurately segmenting nuclei from H&E stained images.

Background: The measurement of posterior tibial slopes (PTS) can aid in the screening and prevention of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and improve the success rate of some other knee surgeries. However, the circle method for measuring PTS on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans is challenging and time-consuming for most clinicians to implement in practice, despite being highly repeatable. Currently, there is no automated measurement scheme based on this method.

Introduction: The oxidative balance score (OBS) is a holistic measure that represents the overall equilibrium between prooxidants and antioxidants in one's diet and lifestyle. Little research has been conducted on the correlation between OBS and 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk (ASCVD). Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to examine the potential correlation between OBS and 10-year risk.

Programmable Chemical Evolution with Natural/Non-Natural Building Blocks.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

November 2024

National Key Laboratory of Immunity and Inflammation Suzhou Institute of Systems Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, 215123, Suzhou, China.

Non-natural building blocks (BBs) present a vast reservoir of chemical diversity for molecular recognition and drug discovery. However, leveraging evolutionary principles to efficiently generate bioactive molecules with a larger number of diverse BBs poses challenges within current laboratory evolution systems. Here, we introduce programmable chemical evolution (PCEvo) by integrating chemoinformatic classification and high-throughput array synthesis/screening.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aims to enhance therapies for injuries and diseases by activating resident stem cells, specifically focusing on Sox9 stem cells that play a crucial role in acute kidney injury (AKI).
  • - Using a mouse model and single-cell RNA sequencing, researchers explored how prostaglandin E2 (PGE) treatment influences Sox9 cell fate during kidney tissue repair, finding that PGE helps Sox9 cells differentiate into essential renal cells while preventing fibrosis.
  • - The findings suggest that activating Sox9 stem cells with PGE can improve kidney regeneration, offering potential new strategies for treating AKI by restoring lipid metabolism and enhancing communication between different cell types in the kidney.

Purpose: The International IgA Nephropathy Prediction Tool (IIgAN-PT) can predict the risk of End-stage renal disease (ESRD) or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline ≥ 50% for adult IgAN patients. Considering the differential progression between older adult and adult patients, this study aims to externally validate its performance in the older adult cohort.

Patients And Methods: We analyzed 165 IgAN patients aged 60 and above from six medical centers, categorizing them by their predicted risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) affects the brain's structural connectivity in preterm infants using diffusion tensor imaging.
  • Researchers compared brain connectivity metrics of 33 infants with BPD and 26 without, measuring aspects like global efficiency and clustering coefficients.
  • The results indicate that preterm infants with BPD show altered network properties, suggesting reduced integration and impaired connections in areas related to vision and cognitive functions, which may help in diagnosing brain damage in these infants.

The SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, poses a significant threat to global healthcare. Peptide and peptide-based inhibitors, known for their safety, efficacy, and selectivity, have recently emerged as promising candidates for treating late-developing viral infections. In this study, three peptides were selected to target different stages of viral invasion, specifically ACE2 and S protein binding, as well as membrane fusion.

Article Synopsis
  • Migraine is a common headache disorder linked to oxidative stress and inflammation, with Dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) showing potential to protect against these factors but its effects on migraines are still unclear.
  • Researchers used a mouse model to simulate chronic migraine by injecting nitroglycerin and tested NBP at various doses to see how it affected pain sensitivity, light sensitivity, and anxiety behavior.
  • Results indicated that NBP reduced pain, light sensitivity, and anxiety in the mice, while also lowering markers related to inflammation and oxidative stress, suggesting a possible therapeutic role for NBP in treating migraines.
