Background: The mechanism of ferroptosis is primarily driven by the iron-dependent lethal accumulation of membrane lipid peroxidation. Bavachin has been found to exacerbate lipid peroxidation in cancer cells; however, whether it hinders hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression by way of ferroptosis remains unknown.

Methods: Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was used to measure the effect of Bavachin on the viability of HCC cells, so as to determine the appropriate drug concentration for subsequent experiments.

Identification of SPP1 macrophages in promoting cancer stemness via vitronectin and CCL15 signals crosstalk in liver cancer.

Cancer Lett

Department of Special Treatment, Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital, Third Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University, Shanghai, 200438, PR China. Electronic address:

Macrophages play a multifaceted role in cancer biology, with both pro-tumorigenic and anti-tumorigenic functions. Understanding the mechanisms underlying macrophage involvement in cancer progression is essential for the development of therapeutic strategies. Our study analyzed single-cell RNA sequencing data from 12 patients with liver cancer and identified a subpopulation of macrophages characterized by elevated expression of SPP1, which correlates with poor prognosis in liver cancer patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Gallbladder neuroendocrine carcinoma (GB-NEC) is a rare and aggressive type of cancer that often lacks effective treatment guidelines, as many patients are diagnosed too late for surgical intervention.
  • A 52-year-old woman treated for metastatic gallbladder carcinoma was diagnosed with GB-NEC and successfully underwent a combination therapy of tislelizumab and chemotherapy, leading to complete remission.
  • The case highlights that while diagnosis relies on specific tests, using PD-1 inhibitors may offer a promising treatment option, necessitating further clinical research for validation.

Background: Hepatectomy is the preferred treatment for solitary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without macrovascular invasion and distant metastasis, but long-term survival remains unsatisfactory in certain patients. We sought to identify whether the grading severity of microscopic vascular invasion (MVI) was associated with recurrence and survival among patients with solitary HCC.

Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent hepatectomy for solitary HCC were identified from a multicenter prospectively-collected database.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnostic panels that use multiple biomarkers are better for diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared to single biomarkers, with models like ASAP and GALAD being evaluated for effectiveness.
  • In a study involving patients with chronic liver diseases (CLDs) from 14 hospitals in China, the ASAP model showed superior performance in detecting HCC compared to the GALAD model and individual biomarkers.
  • The ASAP model was particularly effective in identifying HCC across various types of CLDs and excelled in early-stage HCC detection, despite using one fewer biomarker than the GALAD model.

Background And Objective: According to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) algorithm, tumor burden and liver function, but not tumor biology, are the key factors in determining tumor staging and treatment modality, and evaluating treatment prognosis. The serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) level is an important characteristic of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) biology, and we aimed to evaluate its prognostic value for patients undergoing liver resection of early-stage HCC.

Methods: Patients who underwent curative liver resection for early-stage HCC were identified from a multi-institutional database.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly lethal and heterogeneous malignancy with multiple genetic alternations and complex signaling pathways. The complexity and multifactorial nature of HCC pose a tremendous challenge regarding its diagnosis and treatment. Emerging evidence has indicated an important regulatory role of epigenetic modifications in HCC initiation and progression.

Background GALAD score, comprising five clinical parameters, is a predictive model developed for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection. Since its emergence, its diagnostic ability has been validated in different populations with a wide variation. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate its overall diagnostic performance in differentiating HCC in chronic liver diseases.

Primary or secondary rectal linitis plastica is rare. We describe MRI, 68 Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT, and PET/MRI findings in a case of rectal linitis plastica secondary to prostate adenocarcinoma. In this case, the rectal linitis plastica was the first manifestation of the prostatic adenocarcinoma, and the rectum was the only metastatic site of the prostate adenocarcinoma.

ASAP Score GALAD Score for detection of hepatitis C-related hepatocellular carcinoma: A multicenter case-control analysis.

Front Oncol

September 2022

The Key Laboratory of Tumor Molecular Diagnosis and Individualized Medicine of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, People's Hospital of Hangzhou Medical College, Hangzhou, China.

Background: The GALAD and ASAP scores are two well-recognized algorithms to estimate the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on gender, age, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), protein induced by vitamin K absence or Antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) and AFP-L3 (included in the GALAD score but not in the ASAP score). The current study sought to compare the diagnostic performance of each score to detect HCC among patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Methods: A multicenter case-control study was undertaken in which blood samples were collected from HCVinfected patients with and without HCC.

Background: Although hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains the main cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide, metabolic syndrome, with its increase in prevalence, has become an important and significant risk factor for HCC. This study was designed to investigate the association of concurrent metabolic syndrome with long-term prognosis following liver resection for patients with HBV-related HCC.

Methods: From a Chinese, multicenter database, HBV-infected patients who underwent curative resection for HCC between 2010 and 2020 were identified.

Background: The identification of patients at high risk of developing postoperative complications is important to improve surgical safety. We sought to develop an individualized tool to predict post-hepatectomy major complications in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods: A multicenter database of patients undergoing hepatectomy for HCC were analyzed; 2/3 and 1/3 of patients were assigned to the training and validation cohorts, respectively.
