Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathological syndrome with similar hepatic histological changes to alcoholic liver disease, but without a history of excessive alcohol intake. Obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, hypertension and other metabolic disorders are closely related to its occurrence and development, and its core mechanism is insulin resistance. In addition, there are also non-metabolic-related factors for the occurrence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, such as pancreatoduodenectomy.

Background: Spinal cord injury without radiographic abnormality (SCIWORA) is a rare traumatic myelopathy. Although surgery is one of the most important treatments, the surgery for SCIWORA is controversial, especially the time of surgery is a topic of controversy. Here, we investigate the effects of difference in duration from injury to surgery on the outcome of SCIWORA.

Circadian clock confers temporal control in metabolism, with its disruption leading to the development of insulin resistance. Metabolic substrate utilization in skeletal muscle is coordinated with diurnal nutrient cycles. However, whether the molecular clock is involved in this coordination is largely unknown.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most prevalent hematologic malignancy. Although the use of bortezomib (BTZ) significantly improves MM therapy, intrinsic and acquired drug resistance to BTZ remains a major clinical problem. In this study, we find that Cdc37, a key co-chaperone of Hsp90, is downregulated in relapsed MM patients, especially after BTZ treatment, suggesting a link between Cdc37 and BTZ resistance.

Background: Adhesion after tendon injury is a common complication in clinical practice. The lack of effective prevention mechanisms seriously affects the functional rehabilitation of patients. This research aimed to optimise the amniotic membrane and explain the mechanism of tendon-amniotic membrane by imitating the tendon sheath to construct a multilayer electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibre membrane.

Purpose: To determine the risk factors for pulmonary complications after minimally invasive surgery in elderly patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs).
Methods: A total of 233 elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years) with VCFs, who underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) or percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) surgery at Hebei General Hospital from January 2011 to December 2016, were retrospectively analyzed. Risk factors and the effects of the model were determined by univariate logistic regression analyses and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, respectively.

Objective: To investigate the expression and clinical significance of long non-coding RNA taurine up-regulated gene 1 (lncRNA TUG1) in the peripheral blood of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients.
Methods: With the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs: T-cells, B-cells and monocytes) collected from SLE patients and healthy controls, TUG1 expression was determined to identify the correlation with the clinicopathological features of SLE patients. Thereby, the diagnostic value of TUG1 expression in diagnosis of SLE was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

We aimed to know the effect of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) inhibition on the kidney injury of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) mice. Pristane-induced SLE mice were treated with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC, 50 or 100 mg/kg), a NF-κB inhibitor. Histopathological changes were observed by hematoxylin & eosin, Masson and periodic schiff-methenamine stainings.

The aim of this study was to find potential differentially expressed long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and mRNAs in systemic lupus erythematosus. Differentially expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs were obtained in the Gene Expression Omnibus dataset. Functional annotation of differentially expressed mRNAs was performed, followed by protein-protein interaction network analysis.

There has been few studies focusing on the disc pressure of the upper thoracic spine and it still lacks the quantitative pressure measurement of each spinal disc segment. The aim of this study was to study the pressure changes of intervertebral disc in porcine upper thoracic spine using pressure-sensitive film. Twelve porcine thoracic motion segments were harvested and successively loaded with vertical loads of 100 N, 150 N, and 200 N during 5° of anterior flexion, 5° of posterior extension and 5° of lateral bending.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a curable strategy for the treatment of hematological malignancies and nonmalignant diseases. However, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and relapse are still two major causes of morbidity and mortality after allo-HSCT, and both restrict the improvement of transplant outcomes. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) has been successfully used in allo-SCT settings.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma in China. Epidemiological surveys show that male have a much higher incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma than female. Studies have shown that estrogen and its receptors are associated to gender disparity in hepatocellular carcinoma, but the underlying molecular mechanisms has not yet been fully elucidated.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP), as well as its associated increased risk for fragility fracture, is one of the most disabling consequences of aging in women. This present study aimed to identify candidate genes that involve pathogenesis of PMOP and the therapeutic mechanism of Liuweidihuang (LWDH) pills on PMOP. We integrated microarray datasets of PMOP derived from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) to screen differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between PMOP and normal controls as well as patients with PMOP and patients after treatment of LWDH pills.

Accumulating evidence has implicated that the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) contributes to the progression of liver cancer by affecting the expression of proliferation‑associated genes. A previous study reported that elevated levels of 17β‑hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 4 (HSD17B4) are observed in patients with liver cancer. The current study investigated how upregulated HSD17B4 expression promoted the expression of proliferation‑associated genes in rats with liver cancer.

A lack of effective drugs and technical means to eradicate hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a bottleneck that limits the ability to fully cure HBV infection. Recently, genome-editing technology based on clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats -associated protein 9 is an emerging technique for editing specific gene loci, which can specifically target HBV covalently closed circular DNA, effectively inhibits HBV DNA replication and regulates HBV functional protein expression, and is expected to become a powerful gene therapy tool for the complete eradication of HBV. Considering this, it has become the focus of attention for scholars at home and abroad that how to use clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats -associated protein 9 to accomplish modification of HBV genomes for complete eradication of HBV.
